Baltimore vs. Indianapolis: Key Matchups and Game Preview

Taking a lead from predecessor John Harbaugh, now with the New York Giants, new Ravens head coach Jesse Minter stormed through the preseason just as Harbaugh often did it, with a clean sweep. Now the question is whether Minter, most recently the Chargers' defensive coordinator, can follow up the August work the way Harbaugh often did it in his 18 seasons in charge.

Baltimore's Offensive Identity

In truth, Harbaugh's successes in recent years were more often tied to Lamar Jackson being healthy, which, knock on wood, he seems to be entering the new campaign after sitting out the exhibition slate as usual. Bothered by nagging injuries a season ago that caused him to miss four games entirely and limit him in a few others, Jackson is coming off a losing record as a starter at 6-7 for the first time in his career, but early indicators point toward better days thanks to new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, whose heavy play-action preferences dovetail nicely with one of Jackson's strengths. Jackson completed an NFL-best 80% of his play-action passes last season, and that figures to be a big piece in Doyle's offense this season.

Indianapolis's Pass Rush Concerns

The concern for Shane Steichen, and it's a big one against Jackson, is a pass rush that lost three of its best performers from the edge and will now hope to generate pressure from a questionable group of defensive ends. That might prove too damaging to the Indy cause in the opener.

IND Offensive Weapons

Last season, the Colts were the rage of the league in the first half of the campaign and still seemed well on course for the postseason when quarterback Daniel Jones, who had been a revelation, went down with an Achilles tear in Week 14. That forced Steichen, already without backup Anthony Richardson since early in the season, to make an emergency call to Philip Rivers as Indianapolis desperately tried to stay afloat, but to no avail as seven straight losses to close the campaign ruined what had been an 8-2 start into mid-November. Jones is now back, and so is star running back Jonathan Taylor after keeping his fantasy owners happy again last fall with 1,585 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns, while second-year tight end Tyler Warren could be the best the franchise has had at that position since the days of John Mackey.

Ravens' New Coaching Staff

Moreover, Derrick Henry hardly appears to be slowing down at age 32 after another 1,595 yards rushing a year ago. New weapons like home run rookie wideout Ja'Kobi Lane, via USC, add an even sharper edge to the attack under Minter's new staff.

The public has been heavily on Baltimore throughout the week, with support ranging from 56% to 81% on one metric and 65% to 71% on the other across every recorded snapshot from 08/28 through 09/07. On the total, the Under has carried modest public backing, holding between 51% and 61% across both reported metrics on 08/28 and 09/07.

BAL and IND: Key Injuries and Things To Know

  • Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson was bothered by nagging injuries last season that caused him to miss four games entirely and limited him in others, though he appears healthy entering this season after sitting out the preseason.
  • Indianapolis quarterback Daniel Jones suffered an Achilles tear in Week 14 last season but is back this season.
  • Indianapolis backup quarterback Anthony Richardson was unavailable for much of last season as well.

Ravens vs Colts Side and Total Picks for Baltimore vs. Indianapolis

  • Spread Pick: Baltimore -3.5 (-105) — with Lamar Jackson healthy and Declan Doyle's play-action scheme playing to his strengths, and Indianapolis's pass rush thinned out after losing three of its best edge performers, Baltimore looks well-positioned to control this game and cover at home.
  • Total Pick: Over 47.5 — Derrick Henry's continued dominance and Jackson's play-action efficiency for Baltimore, paired with Jonathan Taylor's 1,585-yard, 20-touchdown season and Tyler Warren's emergence for Indianapolis, give this game plenty of scoring potential on both sides of the ball.

Final Score Prediction: Baltimore vs. Indianapolis

  • Baltimore: 28
  • Indianapolis: 20

This projection reflects Baltimore's offensive identity under Jackson and Henry proving too much for a thinned-out Indianapolis pass rush, while Jonathan Taylor and Tyler Warren keep the Colts competitive enough to push the total over the posted number.

How to Wager on Baltimore vs. Indianapolis

For this matchup, the clearest value sits with laying the short number with Baltimore given Jackson's health and Indianapolis's depleted pass rush, paired with the Over given the offensive weapons on display for both teams. The line movement tables above also show the spread holding mostly steady around 3.5 points across the last several weeks, so bettors comparing entry points can see how consistent the number has been.
