Lions Preview
Detroit’s offense struggled across August, averaging just over 12 points per game. Jared Goff saw limited action in the preseason, but expectations remain high for an attack that returns weapons like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs flashed versatility last year, and Sam LaPorta is another solid option in the short passing game. Jameson Williams will be available after serving his 2024 suspension, giving Goff another deep threat.
Defensively, Detroit has serious injury concerns. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez are both out, which will hurt run support against a physical Packers front. The Lions allowed over 30 points in three of the four preseason games and were torched by Washington in the Divisional Round last January. Josh Paschal is also unavailable, further thinning a pass rush that needs to improve.
Packers Preview
Green Bay looked much sharper in the preseason. Jordan Love appears more confident heading into Year 2 as the starter. He’ll have to monitor Jayden Reed’s foot injury, but Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs are capable of picking up the slack. Aaron Jones remains a key piece in both the run and pass games, and the Packers' offensive line looked cohesive throughout August.
On defense, the Packers are relatively healthy, although Xavier McKinney is questionable with a calf injury. Green Bay held both Seattle and Indianapolis under 20 points in preseason wins and had few issues creating pressure. The unit returns most of its core and benefits from the Lions’ injuries up front and at linebacker. The Packers are favored by 2.5 points for good reason.
