Los Angeles Rams at Kansas City Chief Picks and Prediction for Saturday, August 15, 2026

By: Garrett Beaverson Published 08/14/2026, 08:20 PM ET

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City hosts the preseason opener for both franchises at 4:00 PM ET on NFL Network as the Los Angeles Rams visit the Kansas City Chiefs in what amounts to a potential Super Bowl preview in exhibition clothing. The Rams were already one of the best teams in the league, and then they used the offseason to get even better by acquiring Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. They also acquired Trent McDuffie, who will now face his former team in an exhibition game. On the other sideline, the Chiefs enter the weekend at 6-11 from their most recent regular season — a down year by Kansas City standards — and are looking to accelerate the development of a roster in transition. The key storyline is not on the field but in the coaching booths: two of the league's most experienced head coaches have already telegraphed exactly how this game will unfold. Read on to find out who takes the W in our Rams vs. Chiefs preseason prediction. Get our top NFL Predictions and increase your bankroll!

Rams: Stafford the MVP, McVay Won't Play Him, Ty Simpson Gets the Snaps

Matthew Stafford, coming off an MVP campaign, has looked sharp in training camp and is building early chemistry with receivers such as Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. The Rams will treat this game primarily as an opportunity to evaluate depth and younger players. Sean McVay has a history of not playing his starters in the preseason, so don't expect to see Matthew Stafford much, if at all, in the coming weeks. Ty Simpson will take the field for the Rams in preseason action against the Chiefs on Saturday.

That organizational philosophy is the defining context for everything that follows. Sean McVay is 12-16 straight up but 15-11-2 against the spread as a head coach in the NFL preseason. That tells you the Rams are consistently set as underdogs because he doesn't play his starters, but then they find a way to keep the game close regardless. The formula has been consistent across McVay's tenure: rest the starters, play the backups extended minutes, and trust the organizational depth to stay competitive while gathering the roster evaluation data that matters far more than a preseason box score. The Rams' superior talent and continuity give them a clearer identity heading into the afternoon — a franchise that enters 2026 as one of the clearest Super Bowl favorites in the league behind Stafford's MVP season, Garrett's defensive impact, and McDuffie's secondary upgrade, all of which will be conspicuously absent from Saturday's depth-player showcase.

Chiefs: Nussmeier Gets His Debut, Reid Goes Vanilla, Depth Questions Linger

The top storyline for the Kansas City Chiefs coming out of training camp heading into preseason Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams involves quarterback Garrett Nussmeier — the young signal-caller navigating a significant roster transition in Kansas City following their 6-11 season. Justin Fields is also in camp for the Chiefs — the veteran presence that gives Andy Reid a proven NFL starter as a competing option if Nussmeier struggles to separate himself across the preseason slate.

The most important pre-game information, however, came from Reid himself. Andy Reid said at a press conference on August 10, when asked about facing the Rams in preseason and then again in the regular season: "They're not going to play anybody. And so — and we'll be very vanilla, too. That's kind of how it is." That is the head coach of the home team, on the record, four days before the game, explicitly confirming that both teams will run vanilla play-calling with backups — the clearest head-coach signal available in the preseason betting market. Andy Reid has announced that none of his starters will play, and he's just 47-50-2 against the spread as a head coach in the preseason. The two teams will meet again in Week 13 of the 2026 NFL season at SoFi Stadium for Thursday Night Football — the regular-season meeting that makes the mutual starters-protection decision even more logical from both organizations' perspectives.

Rams vs. Chiefs Picks

  • Money Line Pick: Los Angeles Rams

I see the Rams consistently set as underdogs because McVay doesn't play his starters, but then they find a way to keep the game close regardless. I also have some issues with the depth of this Kansas City roster. Give me the points with the Rams. McVay's 15-11-2 ATS preseason record reflects an organizational quality that shows up through the depth chart rather than the starters, and the Rams' roster construction — even stripped of Stafford, Garrett, and McDuffie — carries deeper position-by-position talent than a Chiefs team that went 6-11 last season and is relying on Nussmeier's development to signal genuine organizational recovery. At plus money against a team with a 47-50-2 ATS preseason coaching record, the Rams represent the sharper side of this line. Take Los Angeles.

  • Over/Under Pick: Under 36.5

The total has dropped a full two points from 38.5 to 36.5. Both directions of the line movement are telling the same story — and that story got confirmed by Andy Reid on August 10. "They're not going to play anybody. And so — and we'll be very vanilla, too." That's the head coach of the home team, on the record, four days before the game, telling everyone that both teams are going to run vanilla play-calling with backups. You don't get much cleaner intel than that. A total set at 36.5 for a game where the head coach of the home team has publicly confirmed vanilla backup play from both sides makes the Under the cleanest single-line play on Saturday's preseason slate — and at -102, the juice is essentially free.
