Pittsburgh Steelers vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers Picks and Predictions for Sunday October 18 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/15/2026, 12:39 AM ET

Aaron Rodgers has been playing professional football long enough to have seen almost everything. Jalon Daniels is still finding out what the league has in store for him. The two quarterbacks will meet Sunday, October 18, 2026, when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM ET on CBS. Pittsburgh is coming off a 34-22 win over Indianapolis, while Tampa Bay finally got its first victory of the season, beating Dallas 24-16 last Thursday. The Steelers are favored by 2.5 points, with the total listed at 40.5. The early Tampa forecast calls for temperatures around 82 degrees, mostly sunny skies, and a small chance of rain. It should be a warm afternoon for the visitors. I find this an interesting game because both teams have started getting more comfortable with their offenses. Pittsburgh has its veteran quarterback playing well, and Tampa Bay has discovered it might have something in its rookie. Experience usually counts for something in these situations, although the football doesn’t always cooperate with the experts. Pittsburgh Steelers Finding Their Way Behind Aaron Rodgers

Pittsburgh comes into Sunday with a 3-2 record and hasn’t won a road game in two attempts. The Steelers have beaten Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis, with their losses coming against New England and Cleveland. Last Sunday’s 34-22 win over the Colts was a welcome afternoon for Mike McCarthy. Jaylen Warren had two enormous plays, scoring on an 80-yard reception and a 50-yard run. Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes, and Pittsburgh finally looked like a team that could score without struggling for every yard. The Steelers had lost 27-24 to Cleveland the previous week, a game that slipped away on a late field goal. There hasn’t been much separating their good afternoons from their bad ones. Pittsburgh is a better team than it looked against Cleveland, but I wouldn’t call it a finished product. McCarthy has a few things to sort out, particularly on offense.

Pittsburgh averages 22.2 points per game and allows 21.8. That isn’t a wide margin, and it helps explain why the Steelers have been involved in so many close contests. Their offense has gained 1,623 yards through five games, averaging 324.6 per outing. The passing game produces 223.4 yards per contest, while the running attack adds 101.2. Warren has made the running numbers look better lately, but Pittsburgh still doesn’t have a ground game that frightens every opponent. The defense has given up 324.2 yards per game, collected 11 sacks, and forced seven turnovers. I was impressed with how Pittsburgh handled Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor, holding him to 45 yards on 15 carries. The Colts kept moving the ball at times, but Pittsburgh made them settle for five field goals. That’s useful defensive work, even if it doesn’t make for exciting television. Tampa Bay has a dangerous runner of its own, and I suspect McCarthy spent some time studying how his defense handled Taylor.

Rodgers has thrown for 1,234 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. He’s had three touchdown passes in each of his last three games, which isn’t bad work for a quarterback whose retirement has been discussed almost as often as his football. Warren has rushed for 410 yards on 70 carries, averaging 5.9 yards per attempt. He also has 19 receptions for 230 yards. Against Indianapolis, he finished with 188 yards from scrimmage. That was the sort of game a coach remembers when deciding who should get the ball next Sunday. Pat Freiermuth caught two touchdown passes against the Colts, and rookie Germie Bernard added six receptions for 80 yards in his first NFL start. T.J. Watt leads the defense with 4.5 sacks. He’s still a difficult man to keep away from the quarterback. Pittsburgh has injuries to consider, with Michael Pittman Jr. on injured reserve, Roman Wilson dealing with a finger injury, and Rico Dowdle working through a toe problem. Jamel Dean has also been listed with an ankle injury. The Steelers could certainly use another receiver, but Warren has been giving Rodgers plenty of help.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Enjoy Their First Win Of The Season

Tampa Bay is 1-4 and hasn’t won at home in three tries. The Buccaneers spent the first month losing games they might have won with one more good play. Their four defeats came by six, four, seven, and three points. That’s enough close losses to make a coach wonder whether he’s unlucky or simply watching a team that isn’t quite good enough. Todd Bowles finally got a different result last Thursday. Tampa Bay went into Dallas and won 24-16, controlling the football for more than 39 minutes. The Buccaneers rushed for 241 yards and didn’t turn it over once. Dallas gave it away three times. Nothing complicated about that recipe. Keep the ball, run it well, and let the other fellow make the mistakes. The win won’t erase those first four losses, but it ought to make practice a little more pleasant this week. Tampa Bay also has a few extra days to prepare after playing on Thursday.

The Buccaneers score 20 points per game and allow 22.4. They’ve averaged 306.4 yards on offense, with 133 coming on the ground. Running the football has been their most dependable option, and I expect plenty of it against Pittsburgh. The defense has allowed 299.4 yards per game, which is actually better than the Steelers’ average. Tampa Bay has six sacks and six takeaways through five games. Those aren’t remarkable numbers, but I thought the defense did some fine work against Dallas. The Cowboys had been scoring more than 30 points per game before the Buccaneers held them to 16. Cornerback Zyon McCollum didn’t allow a completion in 42 coverage snaps. It’s the kind of performance that doesn’t attract much attention unless you’re the quarterback trying to throw in his direction. Tampa Bay has also been doing a good job of keeping possession, averaging nearly 32 minutes with the ball each game. That should suit Bowles just fine. He doesn’t need his rookie quarterback trying to win a throwing contest with Rodgers.

Bucky Irving has rushed for 406 yards and two touchdowns on 77 carries. He’s averaging 5.3 yards per attempt, and Dallas saw the best of him last Thursday. Irving ran for 175 yards and two touchdowns, forcing 10 missed tackles along the way. I imagine a few Cowboys defenders are still thinking about him. Emeka Egbuka leads Tampa Bay with 21 receptions for 192 yards and a touchdown. The quarterback story is a little more complicated. Baker Mayfield threw for 615 yards and two touchdowns in three games before injuring the thumb on his throwing hand. Daniels has since taken over. The rookie completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions against Dallas. It was his first NFL win in his second start. That’s an accomplishment worth enjoying, although Pittsburgh won’t be sending him a congratulatory card. Watt has a habit of making young quarterbacks uncomfortable. The Buccaneers also have injury concerns involving Antoine Winfield Jr., Benjamin Morrison, and SirVocea Dennis. Mayfield’s status remains important, but Tampa Bay is preparing Daniels for another start. Sunday will tell us a little more about how quickly he’s learning.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers Picks and Predictions

Against the Spread Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers -2.5

I’ll take Pittsburgh laying 2.5 points. Tampa Bay has a couple of things going for it. The Buccaneers are at home, they’ve had extra rest, and Irving is coming off a terrific game. Daniels looked capable against Dallas, too. I wouldn’t dismiss that performance simply because he’s a rookie. But there’s a difference between facing Dallas and dealing with Watt and a Pittsburgh defense that just held Jonathan Taylor to 45 rushing yards. If the Steelers can keep Irving from running all afternoon, Daniels will have to do more than he did Thursday night. That’s a difficult assignment for someone making his third NFL start. Rodgers has his own problems, including a thin receiving group and a running game that hasn’t always been dependable. Pittsburgh also hasn’t won on the road, which gives me reason to be cautious. I keep coming back to Warren, though. He’s gaining 5.9 yards per carry, and Rodgers has thrown 10 touchdown passes. Pittsburgh has more ways to get points when a drive starts going badly. I think the Steelers win a close game, probably by a field goal or a little more. I’ll lay the 2.5 points.

Total Pick: Under 40.5 Points

I’m going with Under 40.5 points, though I wish the number were a little higher. Pittsburgh scored 34 against Indianapolis, and Tampa Bay just rushed for 241 yards in Dallas. There are certainly ways this game could produce more scoring than expected. Warren has been breaking big plays, and Irving can turn a missed tackle into a long run. But both defenses have given us reasons to expect a slower afternoon. Pittsburgh held Taylor to 45 yards, while Tampa Bay limited Dallas to 16 points. The Buccaneers are allowing fewer than 300 yards per game, and they have no reason to ask Daniels to throw 40 passes if the running game is working. Bowles would probably be happy with long drives, a few punts, and a chance to win in the fourth quarter. Pittsburgh may not mind that sort of game either. Rodgers can still throw the football, but his receiving group is missing some important pieces. The concern is a sudden touchdown on a long run or a turnover that puts either offense near the goal line. That can happen quickly in the NFL. I don’t expect a shootout, though. A 23-16 Pittsburgh victory would make sense, and that’s enough for me to play Under 40.5 points.

Final Picks: Pittsburgh Steelers -2.5 and Under 40.5 Points.
