Cincinnati vs. Tampa Bay: Key Matchups and Game Preview

They're getting a bit antsy in Cincinnati, where the Bengals haven't made the playoffs since 2022, and a return to the Super Bowl for Joe Burrow, which once seemed inevitable after he reached the finale against the Rams in his second year in the league, is now starting to draw comparisons to Dan Marino, who never got back to the Super Bowl after also making it in his second year with the Dolphins.

Cincinnati's Offensive Line Concerns

Burrow staying in one piece for an entire season would be a nice start after he's missed large chunks in three of his six campaigns in the league, with last year's eight games the fewest in his career. Joe's presence means almost everything to the Bengals, who were 1-8 without him a year ago, and lingering questions along the offensive line, which has allowed Burrow to get sacked 213 times in his career, the fourth most in the league since 2020, and has posted the worst pass-block rate in the league across that span, remain an obvious red flag.

Tampa Bay's Injury Situation

Injuries also figured in the Bucs' demise a year ago and their failure to defend the NFC South crown they had won the previous four seasons. Todd Bowles is crossing his fingers that some of the walking wounded from the summer, like wideouts Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan, will be ready to go for the opener, with the presence of both more important now that Mike Evans has moved to the 49ers.

CIN Defensive Upgrades

For the moment, Burrow is upright, and Zac Taylor is looking forward to a rebuilt defensive line wreaking havoc with foes on the Bengals' schedule now that wrecking machine defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II has arrived from the Giants along with other disruptors on the defensive front.

Buccaneers' Low-Variance Style

The clever Baker Mayfield also looks a proper elixir to Cincinnati's supposedly juiced-up pass rush, and Bowles' own new additions in the defensive front seven could expose the main Bengals question mark of protecting Burrow. Any points from the oddsmakers are always worth considering with the low-variance Bucs, after their last six games a season ago were all decided by four points or fewer. Keep in mind, too, that Cincinnati has been a notorious slow starter in recent years, failing to cover in its last four openers.

The public leaned toward Tampa Bay early, showing 67% on both metrics on 08/25, before Cincinnati drew as much as 62% on one metric by 09/01 while Tampa Bay still held 54% on the other. By 09/09, the split settled at 56% Tampa Bay on one metric and 52% Cincinnati on the other. On the total, the Under has carried strong backing throughout, ranging from 59% to 84% on one metric and 55% to 63% on the other across nearly every recorded snapshot from 08/25 through 09/09.

TB and CIN: Key Injuries and Things To Know

  • Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow has missed large chunks of three of his six NFL seasons, including a career-low eight games last year.
  • Tampa Bay wide receivers Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan were dealing with injuries over the summer, with their availability more important now that Mike Evans has moved to the 49ers.

Buccaneers vs Bengals Side and Total Picks for Cincinnati vs. Tampa Bay

  • Spread Pick: Tampa Bay +3.5 (-105) — Cincinnati has failed to cover in each of its last four openers, and with Burrow's offensive line already the league's worst in pass-block rate since 2020, Bowles' revamped defensive front could exploit that weakness in a game where Tampa Bay's low-variance style has produced games decided by four points or fewer down the stretch.
  • Total Pick: Under 50.5 — with Dexter Lawrence II bolstering Cincinnati's defensive front and Tampa Bay's own pass rush additions aimed at pressuring Burrow, both defenses have real upgrades that could keep this game below the total.

Final Score Prediction: Cincinnati vs. Tampa Bay

  • Tampa Bay: 24
  • Cincinnati: 20

This projection reflects Cincinnati's history of slow starts and offensive line vulnerabilities catching up with the Bengals at home, while Tampa Bay's low-variance identity and improved pass rush are enough to escape with a road win.

How to Wager on Cincinnati vs. Tampa Bay

For this matchup, the clearest value sits with taking the points with Tampa Bay given Cincinnati's poor recent history in openers and its well-documented offensive line issues, paired with the Under given the defensive upgrades both teams made this offseason. The line movement tables above also show the spread holding steady around 3.5 points across the last several weeks even as the juice shifted back and forth, so bettors comparing entry points can see how consistent the number has been.
