Detroit heads down to Tampa on Tuesday night for a 7 PM ET game against the Lightning at Benchmark International Arena. The Red Wings have had their share of problems getting the puck in the net, and now they’re facing a Tampa Bay club that’s been scoring nearly four goals a game. Not exactly the opponent you want when your offense is struggling. Tampa Bay is favored, and I can see why. The Lightning haven’t been great defensively, but Detroit still has to find a way to take advantage of that. Get ready for all the hockey action with our

Detroit Red Wings Need to Find Some Goals
Detroit is 6-8 on the season, scoring 2.79 goals a game while giving up 2.93. That’s not a huge difference, but it’s enough to explain why the Red Wings have been losing more than they’ve been winning. You can get away with scoring two goals some nights. You aren’t going to win many games doing it regularly, especially against teams that can put up four without much trouble.
And that’s what bothers me about Detroit here. Tampa Bay gives up chances. We know that. But can the Red Wings actually finish enough of them? They’ve had games where the offense looks decent for a period, maybe two, and then everything dries up. That’s a tough way to play on the road. Fall behind by a couple against the Lightning, and suddenly you’re chasing a team that would love nothing more than to catch you pressing forward.
Detroit does have a chance if it gets another big night in goal. Its projected starter has posted a .940 save percentage and a 1.40 goals-against average in limited action. Those are excellent numbers, although I’m not putting too much stock in such a small sample. The problem is that even a great goaltender needs some help. If Detroit only manages a goal or two, it probably won’t matter how many saves he makes.
Tampa Bay Lightning Have the Offense to Take Control
Tampa Bay is 8-5, averaging 3.69 goals per game. That’s the number I keep coming back to. The Lightning are getting almost a full goal more per night than Detroit, and that’s a pretty big difference when you’re trying to pick a winner. Tampa Bay doesn’t need to play a perfect defensive game to win. It can give up a couple and still have enough offense to get the job done.
The defense does worry me a little. Tampa Bay is allowing 3.23 goals a game, which is more than you’d like from a team you’re thinking about backing. That’s the opening for Detroit. If the Red Wings can get some traffic in front of the net and turn this into a game where both teams are trading chances, they might have something. I just haven’t seen enough from their offense to trust that happening.
What I do trust is Tampa Bay getting its opportunities. Detroit hasn’t been particularly convincing, and playing on the road against a team with this much scoring ability isn’t going to make things easier. The Lightning don’t have to dominate every minute. They just need to make Detroit pay for a few mistakes. With the way these two teams have been scoring, I like Tampa Bay’s chances of doing that.
Detroit Red Wings vs Tampa Bay Lightning Picks and Prediction
Moneyline Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning
I’m taking Tampa Bay. Detroit’s goaltending could make this interesting, and I wouldn’t be shocked if the Red Wings hang around into the third period. But look at what we’re dealing with. Tampa Bay is scoring 3.69 goals a night, Detroit is at 2.79, and the Lightning are playing at home. Sure, Tampa Bay gives up too many goals, but I don’t trust Detroit to take full advantage of that. The Red Wings would probably need a really strong night in goal and a better offensive performance than they’ve been getting. That’s a lot to ask. I’ll take the Lightning to win it.
Total Pick: Over 5.5 Goals
I like the over 5.5, too. Tampa Bay has been scoring enough to get us most of the way there, and its defense has been giving up more than three goals a game. Detroit doesn’t need to turn into an offensive powerhouse for this to cash. If the Lightning get three or four, a couple from the Red Wings puts us right in the neighborhood. The one thing that could spoil it is Detroit getting outstanding goaltending and keeping Tampa Bay quiet. That’s possible, but I’m not betting on it. I think Tampa Bay gets its goals, Detroit contributes a couple, and we finish with at least six.
Final Picks: Tampa Bay Lightning Moneyline | Over 5.5 Goals
