Austria vs. Jordan Picks and Prediction for Tuesday, June 16, 2026

By: Garrett Beaverson Published 06/15/2026, 10:50 PM ET

Group J's late game on Tuesday brings the San Francisco Bay Area into the World Cup spotlight as Austria and Jordan kick off at 9:00 PM PT at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. For Austria, returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1998, this is the opener they need to win to remain in contention for the knockout rounds alongside Argentina. For Jordan, making their historic debut on the global stage, every moment in North America is already a landmark, but Moroccan coach Jamal Sellami has made it clear his side came here to compete, not just to participate. Read on to find out who draws first blood in our Austria vs. Jordan prediction. Get our top World Cup Predictions and increase your bankroll!

Austria are the clear market favorites at -295, with Jordan available at +950 and the draw priced around +360.

Austria: A Golden Generation's Long-Awaited Stage

For David Alaba, Marko Arnautović, Marcel Sabitzer, and Konrad Laimer, this World Cup is the long-awaited reward for a golden generation of Austrian footballers who have spent their entire careers at elite European clubs without ever getting to test themselves on the game's biggest stage. Ralf Rangnick sealed qualification atop a competitive UEFA group, with a late Michael Gregoritsch equaliser against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Vienna confirming top spot.

Austria's record in qualifying was formidable and Arnautović was at the center of it, scoring eight goals in seven qualifying games with a remarkable conversion rate: just 16 shots, 11 of them on target, eight of them in the net. The 37-year-old is Austria's all-time record holder in both caps (132) and goals (47), and this World Cup is almost certainly his first and only one.

Rangnick has built Austria around a relentless, high-intensity pressing identity that makes them genuinely awkward to play against, a 4-2-3-1 that hunts the ball in packs, transitions at speed, and generates collective pressure far beyond what their individual star power alone would suggest. Sabitzer was Austria's chief creative force in qualifying, leading the team in chances created with 13 and registering three assists, and he is set to reach 100 international caps at this tournament. Captain Alaba, who has won the UEFA Champions League four times with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, anchors the defensive line and brings an authority that percolates through every unit.

Jordan: History Made, Sellami Dreams Bigger

Jordan's place at this World Cup was sealed with a 3-0 victory over Oman, the most significant achievement in the nation's football history, and it came under Moroccan coach Jamal Sellami, who took the job in 2024 and delivered qualification in under a year. Sellami has publicly called on his players to emulate the heroics of his home nation Morocco, who reached the semi-finals in Qatar 2022, and his tactical blueprint draws directly from the Atlas Lions' celebrated defensive structure and counter-attacking identity.

The biggest name in this squad is Mousa Al-Tamari, the Stade Rennais winger nicknamed the 'Jordanian Messi', who scored seven goals and provided 11 assists in 36 club appearances last season and added seven more at international level during qualifying. With 23 goals in 76 international appearances, Al-Tamari is Jordan's most dangerous player and the man every opponent will build their defensive plan around.

Ali Olwan returns from injury as another legitimate goal threat, the 26-year-old was the third-highest scorer in all of AFC qualifying with nine goals, including a hat-trick in their final qualifier, giving Jordan striking depth that belies their debutant status. Jordan went unbeaten across the AFC third round with four wins and four draws and reached the 2023 AFC Asian Cup final, losing to hosts Qatar 3-1, and the 2025 Arab Cup final, falling just short in a 3-2 defeat to Morocco. Key attacker Yazan Al-Naimat is absent through ACL injury, which removes one of their most dynamic attacking options at a critical time.

Austria vs. Jordan Picks

  • Match Result Pick: Austria

Austria averaged 2.75 goals scored and just 0.5 conceded per game in UEFA qualifying, a defensive record that sets a high bar for what Jordan can realistically generate against an organized Rangnick press. Austria's Bundesliga-heavy midfield of Laimer, Sabitzer, Schlager, and Seiwald will suffocate the space Jordan need to launch Al-Tamari and Olwan on the transition, and Alaba's reading of the game should neutralize Jordan's best counter-attacking threats. Stake half a unit given the price and take Austria to win.

  • Over/Under Pick: Over 2.5 Goals

The totals line is set at 3.0, with the Over offering value at +110, and the case for goals is genuine on both sides. Austria will dominate possession and create chances in volume against a Jordan defensive structure built around a domestic-heavy spine without the top-level European experience needed to hold a high-pressing opponent at bay for 90 minutes. Jordan's counter-attacking speed through Al-Tamari will create moments, and an emotionally charged World Cup debut against the clock can produce open football. Jordan's own qualifying campaign was high-scoring, with their attacking depth and preference for open football presenting risks at both ends. Take the Over and down at 2.5, if you can.
