Lumen Field in Seattle hosts this World Cup 2026 Round of 32 fixture at 4:00 PM ET as Belgium and Senegal meet in a straight knockout contest, win and advance, lose and go home. Belgium topped Group G with a commanding 5-1 victory over New Zealand to close the group phase, while Senegal squeezed through despite defeats to France and Norway, recovering with a stunning 5-0 hammering of Iraq to qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams, becoming the first African nation to score five goals in a single men's World Cup match and the first team to reach the knockout rounds after losing their opening two group-stage matches. The winner faces the United States or Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 16, so there is plenty riding on this one beyond simple bragging rights. This is also the first-ever meeting between the senior men's national teams of Belgium and Senegal. Read on to find out who advances in our Belgium vs. Senegal prediction. Belgium: De Bruyne Finally Clicking, Doku Returns, Ngoy Back From Suspension
Belgium were underwhelming early, grinding out a 0-0 draw with Iran and a 1-1 stalemate with Egypt before the floodgates opened in a 5-1 rout of New Zealand. Kevin De Bruyne pulls the strings, and Romelu Lukaku struck off the bench against New Zealand, proof the firepower is there once Rudi Garcia's side click. The contrast between Belgium's first two performances and their New Zealand demolition is the defining narrative of their group stage, and the question in Seattle is which version of the Red Devils shows up.
The central duel of this tie is likely to be Kevin De Bruyne's creativity against Senegal's midfield press, led by Idrissa Gueye and Pape Matar Sarr. De Bruyne has already contributed one goal and three assists' worth of influence in this tournament and operates as Belgium's primary ball-carrier in transition. If Belgium's midfield can isolate De Bruyne in space, the attacking chain that links him to Lukaku and Trossard is capable of unlocking any defense. If Gueye and Camara can prevent that, Senegal's counters through Ismaila Sarr's pace become far more dangerous.
Center-back Nathan Ngoy returns from a one-match ban and should replace Brandon Mechele in the starting lineup, restoring Belgium's preferred defensive shape. Leandro Trossard has scored two goals in the group stage, making him Belgium's in-form attacker and a sharp secondary threat alongside Lukaku, while Jeremy Doku's pace from wide positions gives Garcia a game-changing option to stretch Senegal's defensive line horizontally. Belgium conceded just one goal across the group stage, and with Thibaut Courtois restored between the posts, their defensive solidity looks genuine.

Senegal: Sarr on Fire, Mendy Out
Senegal's path to the Round of 32 has been turbulent, with only one win in their last five matches. That sole victory, however, was emphatic, a 5-0 rout of Iraq that made them the first African side to net five in a single World Cup fixture. Ismaila Sarr, Pape Gueye, and Iliman Ndiaye all impressed with a goal and an assist apiece. A significant blow awaits, though, as first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been ruled out with a knee injury, with Mory Diaw stepping in between the posts.
Senegal's first-round group was tougher than Belgium's. They lost to France (1-3) and Norway (2-3), yet created more clear scoring opportunities in those matches than Belgium did against Egypt and Iran. The Lions of Teranga have superior athletic power in midfield, and Senegal have created more 'big chances' in their group games than Belgium. Ismaila Sarr leads Senegal's tournament scoring charts with three goals in the group stage and has demonstrated the ability to produce against high-quality opposition. They carry genuine pace against Belgium's full-backs, and if Senegal get any transition moments in the second half, Sarr is the most likely beneficiary.
Pape Thiaw's 4-3-3 is built for speed, with Ismaila Sarr's three group-stage goals giving Belgium's backline plenty to think about and Sadio Mane anchoring the attack as the focal point. Thiaw's changes worked wonders in the Iraq match, with misfiring Nicolas Jackson getting dropped for 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye, and Pape Gueye being left on the bench before lifting the team with two goals when introduced. The willingness to make bold selection calls in must-win moments gives Senegal a tactical flexibility that Belgium's more rigid structure cannot always match.
Belgium vs. Senegal Picks
- Match Result Pick: Senegal
Belgium is just not a team we want to back at all in this tournament. They often look confused and the offense has disappeared for large parts of their matches. We would rather back Senegal, that has had more free-flowing offense, and go for the upset here.
- Over/Under Pick: Over 2.5 Goals
With the attacking talent on these teams, it is worth backing them to both score in Seattle. Eight of Belgium's last nine wins featured over 3.5 goals, and there were over 3.5 goals in five of Senegal's last six internationals. Senegal conceded six goals across their two games against France and Norway, and a Belgium side that just put five past New Zealand with De Bruyne orchestrating won't show mercy if the gaps appear again. If Senegal can keep things tight and turn Belgium's commitment forward against them, an upset is on the table, but the attacking quality on both sides makes a low-scoring game genuinely unlikely. Take the Over 2.5 goals at plus money and back both defenses to be tested repeatedly in the Pacific Northwest.
