And I know what people are going to say. Coventry is at home, Sunderland has been losing, so take Coventry. Maybe. But I don’t like how many goals the Sky Blues have been giving up, and Sunderland has finally shown a little life.

Coventry City Is Giving Away Too Much
Coventry has six points from eight league games, with two wins and six defeats. The Sky Blues have lost their last two Premier League matches against Tottenham and Fulham, and they’ve already conceded 15 goals. That’s nearly two a game. It’s difficult enough being newly promoted without making opponents’ jobs easier.

The attack hasn’t been much better. Coventry has scored six goals, which leaves the club with a minus-nine goal difference. When you’re allowing goals at one end and struggling to create chances at the other, you’re going to spend a lot of time near the bottom of the table. Sunderland has been having similar problems, so this is at least a matchup where Coventry should be able to compete. But the Sky Blues need to stop conceding the first good chance opponents get.
Jack Rudoni has scored twice in the league, and Brandon Thomas-Asante has contributed two assists. That’s useful, but Coventry needs more production throughout the lineup. Haji Wright is dealing with a hamstring injury, while Josh Eccles and Aurèle Amenda have calf problems. Luke Woolfenden is also unavailable. Those absences aren’t helping a team that’s already struggling to settle into the Premier League.
Sunderland Has a Chance to Get Moving
Sunderland is bottom with five points. One win, two draws and five defeats. Nobody is going to pretend that’s a good start. But the Black Cats stopped their run of league defeats with a draw against Leeds last weekend, then beat their League Cup opponent 3-2 in midweek to reach the quarterfinals. That’s at least something positive heading into Saturday.
Sunderland has scored seven league goals and allowed 15. So the defense hasn’t been much better than Coventry’s. The difference for me is that Sunderland has started showing a little more fight going forward. The Black Cats aren’t suddenly a great attacking team, but they don’t need to be against a Coventry side that’s allowing almost two goals a game. This might be one of their better opportunities to score twice on the road.
Régis Le Bris has been trying to find a combination that gives Sunderland more attacking threat without leaving the defense exposed. Brian Brobbey gives them a physical presence up front, and Enzo Le Fée can help create chances from midfield. Dan Ballard and Romaine Mundle have been dealing with injuries. The visitors aren’t healthy either, but the recent cup win should give them a little confidence.

Sunderland Moneyline (+125)
I’m taking Sunderland, but I wouldn’t make this one of my biggest bets. Both teams have been poor defensively, and Coventry has the home advantage. That’s enough to make it dangerous. Still, Sunderland has at least stopped losing every time it steps onto the pitch, and the midweek cup victory gives the players something to build on. Coventry has lost six of eight league matches and hasn’t been scoring enough to cover up its defensive problems. I’ll take Sunderland to sneak out a win.
Under 2.5 Goals (-133)
I’m going Under 2.5. Yes, both clubs have allowed 15 goals, so I understand why somebody would want the Over. But they’ve also combined for only 13 goals scored in 16 league appearances. Neither attack has been dependable. With so much riding on this game, I expect a nervous start and plenty of players more concerned about avoiding mistakes than making spectacular plays. One goal could decide it. Sunderland 1-0 is my call.
