Group A's must-win showdown comes to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta as Czechia and South Africa meet in an effective elimination game at 12:00 PM ET. Both sides arrive pointless after opening-round defeats, Czechia lost 2-1 to South Korea after letting a 1-0 lead slip in the final 24 minutes, while South Africa fell 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico, and the mathematics are unforgiving: with Mexico and South Korea the likely group leaders, the loser here almost certainly heads home after two games. Czechia are installed as -130 favorites, with South Africa at +370 and the draw at +270.

Czechia: Schick's Moment

Czechia's return to the World Cup for the first time since 2006 came through one of the most dramatic qualifying paths of any team in the field, a shocking 2-1 loss to the Faroe Islands cost Ivan Hašek his job, before 74-year-old Miroslav Koubek was appointed and immediately guided the side through two consecutive playoff shootout wins over Ireland and Denmark to seal their place in North America. The emotional weight of that journey makes this squad one of the tournament's most mentally battle-tested groups.

Patrik Schick is the focal point of the Czech attack and the player every opponent builds their defensive plan around. The 30-year-old Bayer Leverkusen striker, a treble winner with the club, has 24 international goals in 50 appearances, and recently became the first Czech player to score 100 goals across Europe's top five leagues. Schick scored 22 times in 32 starts for Leverkusen in 2025-26, arriving at his first World Cup in the form of his life. Captain Ladislav Krejčí opened the Czech account at this tournament with a set-piece header against South Korea, and Koubek's side led their qualifying campaign in set-piece goals among all European nations, scoring eight from dead-ball situations, a weapon that will be central to their game plan against a South African unit depleted by suspension.

Captain Tomáš Souček anchors the midfield with 89 international caps and the highest scoring record of any Czech in Premier League history, bringing aerial dominance and late box arrivals that complement Schick's hold-up play perfectly. Lyon's Pavel Šulc adds technical creativity behind Schick, a €50 million-valued attacking midfielder whose Champions League experience with Leverkusen gives him a platform that few Czech players have ever taken into a World Cup.

South Africa: Bafana Bafana Walk In Short-Handed and Under the Cosh

South Africa return to the World Cup for the first time since hosting in 2010, having topped CAF Group C ahead of Nigeria under Belgian coach Hugo Broos, the 72-year-old who has described this tournament as the final chapter of his managerial career. Their opening loss to Mexico was sobering, with Broos setting up in a deeply conservative 5-3-2 that produced just one completed dribble all game, an approach that drew fierce criticism back home for its lack of attacking ambition.

The damage inflicted by that opener is compounding in Atlanta. Top midfielders Themba Zwane and another key player received red cards in the Mexico defeat and will miss Thursday's critical game, stripping South Africa of the creativity and experience that Broos most relies on to connect defense to attack. Burnley's Lyle Foster is South Africa's primary attacking reference point, the only squad member playing in one of Europe's top five leagues, but he was largely starved of service against Mexico, while fellow striker Iqraam Rayners failed to register a single shot on goal in the opener.

Captain Ronwen Williams is the heartbeat of this team, an elite goalkeeper who set an AFCON record for penalty saves and gives South Africa world-class shot-stopping behind whatever defensive structure Broos deploys. Pace and directness from Oswin Appollis on the left flank and the technical creativity of Relebohile Mofokeng give Bafana genuine counter-attacking threats on the transition, but without Zwane's calmness in the midfield engine room, exploiting those threats becomes significantly harder.

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns provide 18 of the 26 players in this squad, a domestically-heavy group that has shown tremendous organizational discipline but whose collective ceiling against European opposition has been consistently exposed at this level.

Czechia vs. South Africa Picks

  • Match Result Pick: Czechia

This is survival football and Czechia hold every meaningful advantage. Schick is the best striker either team will face all group stage, Souček provides the physicality and set-piece threat that South Africa's depleted midfield cannot match, and Koubek's side showed enough in the South Korea defeat, leading for 66 minutes before fading, to suggest they are capable of controlling a game for long enough to get the job done. South Africa walking in without Zwane and another suspended midfielder fundamentally changes their ability to sustain attacking pressure or control possession. Take Czechia to win.

  • Over/Under Pick: Under 2.5 Goals

Only once in South Africa's last five matches has the total exceeded two goals, and their deeply organized defensive structure, set up in a 5-3-2 block that conceded just two against Mexico despite an extremely conservative game plan, will not be easy to break down even with two key suspensions. Czechia's attack tends to be narrow and set-piece reliant rather than free-flowing, meaning goals will come at a premium even as they dominate. Expect Schick to find a goal from a set piece or clinical individual moment, South Africa to struggle to respond without their suspended midfielders, and a tight 1-0 or 2-1 result that keeps the Under comfortable. Take the Under 2.5 goals.
