England vs. Croatia Picks and Prediction for Wednesday, June 17, 2026

By: Garrett Beaverson Published 06/16/2026, 10:08 PM ET

The most compelling Group L fixture kicks off at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Wednesday evening as England open their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against familiar rivals Croatia at 4:00 PM ET. These two nations have developed one of international football's great modern rivalries, meeting in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 group stage, and the 2018-19 Nations League, and both arrive in Dallas understanding that the result here will define who controls the group. England are installed as favorites at -135, with Croatia available at +400 and the draw at +286.

England: Tuchel's Machine, 60 Years of Hurt, and the Best Squad Since '66

England swept through UEFA qualifying with a perfect eight wins from eight, scoring 22 goals and conceding none, the only European team in the entire qualifying round to finish their campaign without conceding a single goal. Thomas Tuchel arrived and immediately imposed a structural identity that qualifying opponents simply could not crack, and he arrives in North America with the deepest and most technically accomplished England squad since the 1966 World Cup winners.

Tuchel's preferred system is a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, with Declan Rice anchoring the midfield as the deepest player, Jude Bellingham operating in the number 10 role with license to arrive late into the penalty area, and Harry Kane leading the line. Rice, at 27, is among the best defensive midfielders in Europe and the press only functions at its highest level when he controls the zone behind it, a role he has mastered at Arsenal, where he and Bukayo Saka reached the Champions League final and won the Premier League this season. Bellingham, at 22 and already in his second World Cup, operates as a box-to-box force at Real Madrid with a serious goal threat from late runs, England need him at his best from the first whistle in Dallas.

Bukayo Saka is the most consistent attacker in the squad over the past three seasons, combining sharp dribbling with intelligent movement and an accurate final ball, while Marcus Rashford, reviving his career at Barcelona, has been handed the No. 11 shirt, hinting at a prominent role as the left-sided option in Tuchel's attack. Kane arrives at Bayern Munich having been in revelatory form, providing more goals and creative support than at any other point in his international career, and the concern about Saka's fitness ahead of the opener adds a layer of uncertainty to England's right flank that Tuchel may manage carefully.

Croatia: Modric's Fifth World Cup and a Golden Generation's Last Stand

Luka Modrić captains Croatia at a record-extending fifth World Cup at the age of 40, joining Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the first male footballers in history to play in six World Cups, though in Modrić's case, the record is five appearances with a sixth potentially on the horizon. Now at AC Milan, Dalic has shifted Modrić into a more advanced number 10 role rather than conducting from deep, reducing the physical workload and concentrating his creative gifts on unlocking opposition defences, a tactical concession to his age that gives Croatia's attack a different dimension.

The squad features four players with more than 100 international caps in Modrić, Ivan Perišić, Mateo Kovačić, and Andrej Kramarić, a volume of experienced tournament pedigree that few nations on earth can match. Joško Gvardiol returns to the defensive anchor role after recovering from a fractured shin that kept him sidelined for five months, having played his first minutes back against Crystal Palace in mid-May, his fitness is the biggest question mark over Croatia's defensive stability. Kramarić was Croatia's top scorer in qualifying with six goals and is expected to lead the line as the primary striker, with the next generation of Luka Sučić, Martin Baturina, and Petar Sučić auditioning to eventually fill Modrić's shoes.

The historical context hangs over this fixture like a shadow. Croatia secured a 2-1 extra-time triumph in the 2018 World Cup semi-final before England registered a 1-0 success in the group stage at Euro 2020, with the head-to-head over the past decade split almost perfectly. Croatia failed to advance from the group stage at Euro 2024 and arrive in Arlington with an aging core that Dalic has kept together through a combination of elite quality and sheer tournament know-how — a combination that has produced semi-final appearances in three of their last four major tournaments.

England vs. Croatia Picks

  • Match Result Pick: Croatia win or draw

We believe England is overpriced in this tournament. We have seen many draws in the first round of matches with teams that have much less of a gap in talent. Croatia is always a formidable side and we get a good enough price to back them on the double chance here.

  • Over/Under Pick: Under 2.5 Goals

England conceded zero goals across eight qualifying matches, a defensive record that reflects Tuchel's core identity, and Croatia are not a free-flowing attacking side with pace to burn. Modrić will control tempo, Kovačić will recycle the ball efficiently, and Dalic will set up to frustrate England and play for a draw if needed. England have the quality to find a goal against any side, but both teams' defensive structures make a cricket score genuinely unlikely. Their last three meetings have produced three goals across 270 minutes of football. Take the Under 2.5 goals.
