Netherlands are priced at +100 on the money line, with the draw at +275 and Japan at +240

Netherlands Looking To Finally End Their World Cup Drought

The Netherlands arrive at their 12th World Cup appearance with runners-up finishes in 1974, 1978, and 2010 three final appearances that make them one of the most successful nations never to have won the title. Ronald Koeman's side reached the quarter-finals at the 2022 tournament and the Euro 2024 semi-finals, and enters this group as the clear favorites to advance.

Koeman's side has put together a 10-match unbeaten run since June 2025 and qualified from their UEFA group with six wins and two draws without suffering a single defeat. Fifteen of the 26 players are based in the Premier League, including three each from Liverpool, Brighton, and Manchester City, reflecting a squad with deep top-flight experience and physical conditioning.

Captain Virgil van Dijk leads what may be the strongest defensive unit at the entire tournament, partnered by Micky van de Ven and Denzel Dumfries providing elite athleticism across the back line. Ryan Gravenberch and Frenkie de Jong operate in the double pivot, with Tijjani Reijnders completing the midfield three and bringing dynamic box-to-box energy from his role at Manchester City.

Memphis Depay carries 55 international goals into this tournament, more than any Dutch player in history, surpassing Robin van Persie's record, and returns from a hamstring injury that limited him to two substitute appearances at Corinthians. Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen, who scored 14 goals in 18 Serie A matches for Roma after joining from Aston Villa in January, give Koeman a genuinely dangerous and deep attacking group.

The Dutch do carry meaningful injury concerns into the tournament. Xavi Simons ruptured his ACL while playing for Tottenham and was ruled out months in advance, while defensive stalwarts Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij are also absent. Jurrien Timber withdrew from the squad due to injury on June 8, just days before the opener, adding further depth concerns to a back line already stretched by absences.

Japan Looking To Spring Another World Cup Upset

Japan arrive having beaten Germany, Spain, Brazil, and England in recent years and carrying a genuine belief they can finally push past the last-16 ceiling they have hit four times running. Having lost heartbreakers in the round of 16 at consecutive World Cups, the Samurai Blue have developed a reputation for giant-killing that the Netherlands cannot afford to dismiss.

Japan was the first non-host nation to secure its place in the 2026 World Cup, winning their qualifying group comfortably ahead of schedule, scoring 22 goals and conceding just two across six matches. They arrive on a five-match winning run, with the headline result being a 1-0 victory over England.

The squad enters the tournament with significant injury disruptions of its own. Japan has been dealt a massive double blow with star wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Takumi Minamino both ruled out of the tournament due to injury, Mitoma in particular was widely considered Japan's most creative attacking player and his absence reshapes their entire offensive structure. Captain Wataru Endo also withdrew due to injury on the very first day of the competition and was replaced by Shuto Machino, with Ko Itakura taking on the captain's armband.

Takefusa Kubo has promised to fill the void left by Mitoma. The 24-year-old had a fantastic season at Real Sociedad, where he helped lift the Copa del Rey and tormented the best defenses in La Liga. Ritsu Doan, who scored the equalizing goals against both Germany and Spain off the bench at the 2022 World Cup, has since joined Eintracht Frankfurt and is Japan's most dangerous wide attacker alongside Kubo, giving Moriyasu a genuine counter-attacking weapon despite the injury losses up front.

Netherlands vs. Japan Picks

Money Line Pick for Netherlands vs. Japan

  • Netherlands ML (3 Units)

Netherlands get the edge here, but this is one of the most genuinely uncertain Matchday 1 fixtures in the entire tournament. Netherlands enter as the group's most credentialed side, backed by a qualifying record of six wins and two draws without a defeat and a defensive unit that may be the strongest at the entire tournament. The Van Dijk-led back line gives Koeman's side a platform that Japan will genuinely struggle to break down even without Mitoma and Endo. Netherlands hold the advantage across all three head-to-head meetings, winning two and drawing one, with Japan yet to record a victory over the Dutch, and the weight of tournament experience on the Dutch side — including three World Cup final appearances, gives them a psychological edge in a tight opener. At +100, the Netherlands offer genuine plus-money value as the better side on paper. Take Netherlands on the money line.

Over/Under Pick for Netherlands vs. Japan

  • Under 2.5 Goals (-115)

This has the feel of a tight, open opener rather than a comfortable Dutch win, with Japan's counter-attacking threat making a shared result very live and both teams likely to approach the game cautiously in a group where every point matters. Kaoru Mitoma's injury shifts the creative burden squarely onto Kubo and Doan, reducing Japan's ability to generate sustained pressure and limiting the volume of high-quality chances against a Van Dijk-anchored defense. The Netherlands tend to control games methodically rather than blowing teams away, with Gravenberch and De Jong prioritizing security in the double pivot, and Koeman's 4-3-3 is built to protect clean sheets first. Both sides are cautious about the injury situations heading in, and a measured, tight opener where neither team wants to overcommit is the most likely outcome in a group where the margin for error is slim. Take the Under 2.5 goals.
