Newcastle United vs Aston Villa Picks and Predictions for Saturday October 17 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/15/2026, 12:55 AM ET

Aston Villa heads to Newcastle on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to face the Magpies at St. James’ Park. Kickoff is set for 12:30 PM ET. Newcastle just got hammered 4-1 by Coventry, while Villa is coming off a 6-0 Champions League win over Fenerbahçe on Wednesday. Newcastle is favored around +120, with Villa near +200 and the draw around +275. The total is set at 2.5 goals. I’m taking Newcastle, although that Coventry game certainly doesn’t make me feel wonderful about it. Four goals against a promoted team? Come on. But Villa just played Wednesday, and now they’re heading north for another tough match. I think Newcastle gets a better performance in front of its own supporters. And with the way both defenses have been playing, I like the over.

Newcastle United Have Some Explaining To Do

Newcastle is 2-2-2 in the Premier League, with eight points from six matches. Monday’s trip to Coventry was a disaster. The Magpies lost 4-1, and it could’ve been worse. They had 66% possession and took 19 shots. Sounds pretty good until you look at the scoreboard. Coventry kept finding openings, while Newcastle kept wasting chances. Sven Botman got their only goal. Matthias Jaissle apologized afterward, and I don’t blame him. Newcastle also lost 4-1 at Leeds last month. That’s eight goals conceded in two away matches. Not good. At least they’re back at St. James’ Park, where they’ve been harder to beat. They beat Hull 2-1 in their last home match. I think they’ll be glad to see their own supporters Saturday.

Newcastle has scored ten goals and allowed 13 in six league matches. That’s more than two conceded per game. You can’t be happy with that. They’ve managed only one clean sheet, too. The attack has been decent at times, but the finishing hasn’t always been there. Against Coventry, Newcastle had three big chances and didn’t do enough with them. That’s what drives supporters crazy. Plenty of possession, plenty of shots, and one goal. Villa has given up 11 in six league matches, so there should be opportunities Saturday. The problem is making them count. Newcastle doesn’t need to play beautiful football here. I’d settle for better defending and somebody putting away a couple of chances.

Harvey Barnes has three league goals and has been one of Newcastle’s better attacking options. Anthony Elanga and Joseph Willock have two each. At least they’re getting goals from different players. Barnes has also created ten chances, so he’s doing more than just waiting around for the ball. The injuries are a problem, though. Valentino Livramento and Ewen Jaouen are out, while Elanga, Dan Burn, Amar Dedic, Lewis Miley and William Osula have been dealing with fitness issues. Joelinton has only recently returned to the squad. That’s a lot of uncertainty. And Newcastle doesn’t have much time to sort it out after Monday. I’d certainly check the lineup before betting, especially after that defensive mess against Coventry.

Aston Villa Have Been A Different Team In Europe

Villa is 1-2-3 in the Premier League, sitting on five points. That’s not where Unai Emery wants to be. Last Saturday, they drew 2-2 with Brentford. Nicolas Jackson scored, John McGinn put Villa ahead late, and then Brentford equalized two minutes later. Two minutes! I’d imagine that one annoyed Emery. But Wednesday was a completely different story. Villa hammered Fenerbahçe 6-0 in the Champions League. Jackson scored twice, Ross Barkley got two, and everything seemed to go right. Six goals after scoring only six in their first six league matches. Figure that one out. The question is whether Villa can bring some of that European form into the Premier League. They certainly haven’t been doing it regularly.

Villa has scored six goals and conceded 11 in six league matches. One goal per game. That’s not enough, especially when you’re allowing almost two. They’ve managed just one clean sheet. Newcastle has been struggling defensively, so Villa should get some chances here. But the Premier League attack has been a lot quieter than the one we saw Wednesday. Against Brentford, Villa had 20 shots and seven on target. They were creating opportunities. They just couldn’t finish the match with three points. The other thing I’d worry about is the schedule. Villa played Wednesday night. Newcastle played Monday. That’s a couple of extra days to recover for the home team. And after a big European win, sometimes the next league match is a little harder than it looks.

Jackson has been Villa’s most useful attacking player in the league, with three goals. He also scored twice against Fenerbahçe, so he’s coming into Saturday feeling pretty good. McGinn has two league goals and has been creating chances from midfield. Johan Manzambi has chipped in with a goal and two assists in limited playing time. That’s decent production. Villa has injuries, too. Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen, Modou Cisse, Leon Goretzka and Matteo Ruggeri are unavailable, while a couple of younger squad players are doubtful. That’s missing help in midfield and defense. I like what Villa can do going forward when everybody’s clicking. But Newcastle should have some room to attack against this back line. And I’d be surprised if Emery doesn’t make a few changes after Wednesday.

Newcastle United vs Aston Villa Picks and Predictions

Moneyline Pick: Newcastle United +120

I’m taking Newcastle at +120. I know what you’re thinking. Didn’t they just lose 4-1 to Coventry? They sure did. And Villa just scored six in Europe. That’s not exactly the kind of form that makes Newcastle an easy pick. But look at the schedule. Villa played Wednesday night and now has to travel to St. James’ Park. Newcastle has had a little more time to recover, and I expect a much better effort at home after that embarrassment. Barnes has three league goals, and Villa has allowed 11 in six matches. There should be chances. The thing that worries me is Newcastle’s defense. They’ve conceded 13, and Jackson has been scoring for Villa lately. If Newcastle keeps making the same mistakes, they’re going to lose again. But I don’t think we’ll see another performance like Coventry. Give me Newcastle at +120.

Total Pick: Over 2.5 Goals (-165)

I’ll take Over 2.5 goals. Newcastle has allowed 13 in six league matches. Villa has given up 11. That’s 24 goals conceded between them. And both teams are coming off matches where the goals were flying around. Newcastle lost 4-1, Villa won 6-0. I know the Champions League is different, but Villa has shown it can finish chances when things start going right. Newcastle has scored ten league goals, too. That’s not a bad number. The concern is Villa’s tired legs after Wednesday. Maybe Emery sets his team up to keep things quiet and get out of Newcastle with a point. Newcastle has also wasted some good chances lately. A 1-1 draw wouldn’t shock me. But neither defense has given me much reason to trust it. I think Newcastle gets a couple at home, and Villa has enough offense to grab one. Something like 2-1 Newcastle sounds about right. I’ll take the over.

Final Picks: Newcastle United Moneyline +120 and Over 2.5 Goals (-165).
