Lumen Field in Seattle, the same venue where the United States beat Australia 2-0 earlier in this tournament, hosts the Round of 16 at 8:00 PM ET as the co-hosts take on Belgium with a quarterfinal berth and a place in American soccer history on the line. The USA reached this stage with a routine 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, but lost leading scorer Folarin Balogun to a red card in the second half, a suspension that rules him out of this match and forces Pochettino to reshape his attack. Belgium survived a remarkable 3-2 extra-time thriller against Senegal, coming back from 2-0 down with seven minutes on the clock through Youri Tielemans and a Romelu Lukaku winner. The USA are chasing their first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since 2002. A win in Seattle would be the most significant result in the program's modern history. USA: Balogun Suspended Up in Air, Pepi Steps Up

The USA have shown few signs of weakness and approach their Round of 16 tie against Belgium with the aim of qualifying for a World Cup quarterfinal for the first time since 2002. The Stars and Stripes started the knockout rounds with a routine 2-0 victory over Bosnia and the Round of 32 experience was very different from that of Belgium, who recovered from a two-goal deficit in their 3-2 extra-time triumph over Senegal. Balogun has scored three times at this World Cup so far and has been superb up front for the USA. His combinations with everyone around him have made the USA tick, he has made the likes of SergiΓ±o Dest, Malik Tillman, Weston McKennie, and Christian Pulisic that much more effective.

Captain Christian Pulisic played for 88 minutes against Bosnia and Herzegovina after shaking off a calf injury, which gives the team a major boost. We could see Pulisic and Ricardo Pepi in attack for this game, with Weston McKennie and Malik Tillman getting forward to support them. Pepi's physical presence and hold-up quality gives Pochettino a different kind of focal point from the quick, dynamic Balogun, and the supporting cast around him through McKennie's late arrivals from midfield, Tillman's directness, and Dest's overlapping runs from right back is enough to generate the volume of chances that Belgium's leaky defense has given up throughout this tournament.

The USA comes into this match averaging 1.45 non-penalty xG per match. McKennie and Tyler Adams will look to suffocate the midfield, forcing Belgium out wide where Antonee Robinson can use his tracking speed. Robinson against Doku is the individual defensive challenge that shapes Pochettino's entire game plan, if the Philadelphia Union left back can keep Doku honest and prevent him from getting in behind, the USA's defensive structure holds. If Doku gets isolated and finds space on the counter, the problems multiply quickly against a USA backline that has kept just one clean sheet across its last 11 matches.

Belgium: De Bruyne the Key

Belgium are a walking contradiction with world-class talent playing on borrowed time. Against Senegal in the Round of 32, the Red Devils looked completely dead and buried, down 2-0 with seven minutes on the clock. Then Youri Tielemans decided to wake up, bagging a brace before Romelu Lukaku bullied his way through the box to complete a ridiculous 3-2 extra-time escape act. Belgium's defensive xG this tournament is a horror show at 1.65 allowed per 90, but their attacking output remains elite because Kevin De Bruyne still sees passing lanes that don't exist for normal humans.

Rudi Garcia has questions to answer, particularly ones surrounding his attacking selections. In the game against Senegal, he took both Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne off in the 55th minute, and Belgium looked a better side for it. There is also the debate surrounding Amadou Onana and Hans Vanaken in midfield, with the latter struggling after starting against Senegal. Lukaku's fitness has been the tournament's central Belgian subplot, he started on the bench through the group stage but his late Senegal winner was the most important goal any Belgian player has scored in years, and a first start in Seattle would give Garcia the physical focal point his attacking system has lacked throughout.

Belgium have been lucky so far. On another day, they could have lost both their opening group games against Egypt and Iran. A Senegal meltdown handed them a way back in the Round of 32 as well, when there really shouldn't have been one. Fortune has favored Belgium thus far, but they have also been good enough to take those moments of fortune in their stride. Belgium scored five goals against the USA in a friendly earlier this year.

USA vs. Belgium Picks

  • Money Line Pick: USA

Belgium is simply not good. We have faded them several times in this competition already. We somehow lost our Senegal bet where Belgium should have been knocked out. We will go back to the well again, as Belgium will face a good side. We simply cannot trust Belgium to beat a good opponent, and it is unlikely the miracle that happened in the last round will happen again.

  • Over/Under Pick: Over 2.5 Goals

The USA comes into this match averaging 1.45 non-penalty xG per match, while Belgium is clicking at a massive 2.10. Both teams possess elite attacking personnel paired with backlines that frequently forget how to mark on set pieces. The Americans have scored at least twice in every match at this tournament, and Belgium's attacking output, five goals against New Zealand, three against Senegal., reflects a side with goal-scoring depth across multiple positions. Both teams give up chances, both teams find the net, and a knockout match in front of a packed Lumen Field crowd between two attack-minded sides is the ideal setting for the Over to deliver. Take the Over 2.5 goals.
