Atlanta Dream vs Golden State Valkyries Picks and Predictions for Saturday October 17 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/15/2026, 01:09 AM ET

The Atlanta Dream head to San Francisco on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to face the Golden State Valkyries in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals. Tipoff is at 3:30 PM ET from Chase Center, with NBC and Peacock carrying the game. Golden State is favored by 2.5 points at FanDuel, and the total is sitting at 153.5. Now this should be fun. Neither team has won a championship, and both just swept their semifinal opponents. Atlanta knocked out New York, while Golden State sent the defending champion Las Vegas Aces home. I’m taking the Valkyries. They’ve beaten the Dream three times already this season, and that defense has been giving everybody fits. I also like the under. Finals basketball can get pretty physical, and Golden State is awfully good at making opponents work for every basket.

Atlanta Dream Have Earned Their Shot At A Championship

Atlanta finished the regular season 30-14 and comes into the Finals after winning five straight playoff games. That’s impressive. The Dream swept Washington in the opening round, then took care of New York in three straight. Their last game was an 85-83 win over the Liberty. Close one. Atlanta had to hold off a late push, but it got the job done. The Dream also won 101-98 in overtime in Game 2. They haven’t exactly been cruising through every game, but they’ve been winning. And really, that’s what matters in October. This is Atlanta’s first Finals appearance since 2013. The franchise has been here before, but it’s still looking for its first championship. You think the Dream are going to be nervous? Maybe a little. But six straight playoff wins should give them some confidence.

Atlanta averaged 91.3 points during the regular season. That’s the third-best offense in the league. The Dream can score inside, hit shots from outside and make life miserable for teams that don’t rebound. They’ve also been one of the better defensive teams, ranking third in defensive rating. That’s a pretty good combination. But Golden State presents a different problem. The Valkyries allowed just 75.1 points per game during the regular season. Best in the league. Atlanta hasn’t had much luck against that defense either. The Dream scored 66, 75 and 83 in their three meetings with Golden State. See the problem? Atlanta is used to scoring around 90. The Valkyries have been making them work a whole lot harder than that.

The Dream have been getting contributions from different parts of the lineup, and that’s one reason they’ve made it this far. They can score from the perimeter, attack the basket and grab offensive rebounds when the first shot doesn’t fall. But the injury situation matters. Atlanta lost an important interior player to a season-ending leg injury, and one of its leading perimeter scorers missed the semifinal clincher with a hand problem. That’s not what you want heading into the Finals. Especially against a Golden State defense that doesn’t give away many easy looks. Atlanta has enough depth to keep competing, and the extra rest should help. But I’d want to see that injury report before betting heavily on the Dream. Losing another scoring option would make an already difficult matchup even tougher.

Golden State Valkyries Have Been Making Everybody Miserable

Golden State finished 32-12 and earned the second seed in the playoffs. Now the Valkyries are four wins away from a championship in only their second season. That’s pretty wild. They needed three games to get past Dallas in the opening round, then swept Las Vegas in the semifinals. The last game went to overtime before Golden State won 87-77. The Valkyries outscored the Aces 16-6 in the extra period. Six points! Las Vegas had been one of the highest-scoring teams in the league, and Golden State made it look completely uncomfortable. The Valkyries also won the first two games of that series 71-60 and 83-81. Different kinds of games, same result. That’s what I like. They don’t need everything to go perfectly on offense to win.

Golden State allowed 75.1 points per game during the regular season. That’s 7.6 fewer than the next-best defense. Think about that for a second. They weren’t just the best defensive team. They were way ahead of everybody else. The Valkyries also had the league’s highest-scoring bench at 35.9 points per game. That’s important in a long series. You can bring in fresh players without the whole offense falling apart. They weren’t a great scoring team overall, averaging a little over 82 points, but they didn’t need to be. Keep opponents in the 70s, get enough from the bench and make a few shots late. It’s worked pretty well. Atlanta has a much better offense than most teams, so I’m not expecting an easy night. But Golden State has already shown it can slow the Dream down.

The Valkyries have been getting terrific defensive work across the lineup. Their perimeter defenders make it hard to get comfortable, and the interior defense has been excellent at contesting shots. Golden State also has enough scoring off the bench to survive a cold stretch from its starters. That mattered against Las Vegas. The Valkyries fell behind in games and still found ways to come back. I like that in a team playing for a championship. Golden State also gets to open the series at Chase Center, where it went 17-5 during the regular season. That’s a pretty serious home advantage. The building should be loud Saturday. Of course, Atlanta has already won six playoff games and isn’t going to be intimidated just because the crowd is making noise. But Golden State has been playing exactly the kind of defense I’d want behind my money.

Atlanta Dream vs Golden State Valkyries Picks and Predictions

Against the Spread Pick: Golden State Valkyries -2.5 (-114)

I’m laying the 2.5 points with Golden State. Look, Atlanta is good. Thirty wins in the regular season, six straight in the playoffs, and an offense that averaged more than 91 points. I’m not pretending the Dream can’t win this game. But Golden State beat Atlanta three times during the season. All three! The Dream scored 66, 75 and 83 in those games. That’s not the offense Atlanta usually brings to the court. Golden State also just swept Las Vegas, holding the Aces to 60 points in one game and 81 in another. The defense is the real deal. Atlanta could make this uncomfortable if its outside shots start falling, and the Dream have been playing better since those summer meetings. That’s the worry. But Golden State is at home, has more reliable defensive depth and doesn’t need to score 90 to win. I’m thinking the Valkyries take Game 1 by five or six. Give me Golden State -2.5.

Total Pick: Under 153.5 Points (-110)

I’ll take Under 153.5. I know Atlanta averaged 91.3 points during the regular season. That’s a lot of offense, and the Dream have scored 92, 93, 101 and 85 in their last four playoff games. So yeah, there’s some danger here. But have you watched Golden State defend? The Valkyries allowed 75.1 points a game, and Las Vegas managed only 60 in their first semifinal meeting. Atlanta scored 66, 75 and 83 against Golden State during the regular season. Two of those three games finished below this total. And Game 1 of the Finals? I’d expect both teams to be a little more careful with the ball. Nobody wants to give away easy points in the opening game of a championship series. The biggest worry is Atlanta getting hot from three or the game staying close enough for late free throws. That could push things over. But I think Golden State slows the pace and makes Atlanta earn everything. Something like 78-72 Valkyries sounds about right. I’ll take the under.

Final Picks: Golden State Valkyries -2.5 (-114) and Under 153.5 Points (-110).
