Golden State Valkyries vs. Minnesota Lynx Picks and Prediction for Monday, August 24, 2026
The Golden State Valkyries travel to Minneapolis on Monday, August 24, for a massive late-season matchup against the Minnesota Lynx. This is a battle between the WNBA's top two teams in the standings, with Minnesota entering at 31-7 and Golden State sitting at 25-11. The Lynx have already clinched a playoff spot and own the league's best record, while the Valkyries have also secured their postseason position and are looking to prove they can compete with Minnesota before the playoffs begin.
There is also a major head-to-head storyline entering this game. Minnesota has dominated the season series, winning all three meetings in 2026, including an 87-84 win on June 4, an 81-75 victory on June 19, and a 77-66 win in San Francisco on August 19. The Lynx have now won the first nine matchups in franchise history against Golden State, making Monday another opportunity for the Valkyries to finally break through against the league's top team.
The biggest variable is Minnesota's injury report. Rookie sensation Olivia Miles is listed day-to-day with an ankle injury, while Napheesa Collier is listed out for rest in the available pregame data. That could dramatically change the matchup, particularly after Miles played a major role in Minnesota's most recent victory over Golden State.

Valkyries: Defense Has Been Elite, but Minnesota Remains Their Biggest Problem
Golden State has put together an outstanding 2026 season. At 25-11, the Valkyries have established themselves as one of the WNBA's best defensive teams and have built a significant gap between themselves and much of the rest of the playoff field.
The Valkyries have allowed only 76.6 points per game, according to the available pregame team statistics, while their opponents have struggled to consistently create efficient offense. Golden State's defensive identity has been one of the biggest reasons for its success, and the Valkyries enter this matchup with a positive +5.9 net rating.
The problem is that Minnesota has been the one matchup Golden State simply has not solved.
In the August 19 meeting, the Valkyries lost 77-66 after falling behind by as many as 22 points. Golden State struggled badly from the perimeter, shooting just 7-for-37 from three-point range, and although the defense forced 15 Minnesota turnovers, the Valkyries generated only nine points off those mistakes.
That offensive inconsistency is the concern heading into Monday.
Gabby Williams has been Golden State's leading scorer this season at 14.4 points per game, while Veronica Burton has emerged as the engine of the offense, averaging 12.4 points and 5.5 assists per game. Burton is also shooting 36.6% from three-point range, making her ability to create offense and hit perimeter shots critical against Minnesota's aggressive defense.
The Valkyries have also received important production from their frontcourt. Kiah Stokes leads the team with 5.3 rebounds per game, and her interior defense will be essential against a Minnesota team that has been one of the league's most efficient offenses.
Golden State's recent loss to Chicago also showed the importance of its bench. Laeticia Amihere scored a career-high 16 points on a perfect 7-for-7 shooting, while Janelle SalaΓΌn added 13 points. The Valkyries' reserves combined for 51 points in that game, giving Golden State another potential path to keeping this matchup competitive if the starters struggle.
The Valkyries are absolutely capable of beating Minnesota, but they need to solve their biggest issue from the previous meetings: converting defensive stops into efficient offense.
Lynx: Olivia Miles Has Transformed Minnesota's Offense
Minnesota enters this game as the WNBA's top team, and the numbers explain why.
The Lynx are 31-7 and riding a six-game winning streak entering Monday's matchup. They average 92.2 points per game, shoot 48.5% from the field, and own a league-best offensive profile among the teams at the top of the standings. Minnesota has also been excellent at Target Center, entering this matchup with a 14-5 home record.
The biggest story of Minnesota's season has been rookie Olivia Miles.
Miles is averaging 19.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game, while shooting 50.3% from the field and 40.7% from three-point range. Her combination of scoring efficiency and playmaking has completely changed Minnesota's offensive ceiling.
Her most recent performance against Golden State showed exactly why she is so important. Miles recorded 20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds in Minnesota's 77-66 win on August 19 before leaving midway through the fourth quarter with the ankle issue that has placed her status for Monday in question.
If Miles plays, Minnesota has a major advantage in the backcourt. If she is unavailable, the Lynx will need even more from veteran Kayla McBride, who has been outstanding this season.
McBride is averaging 18.3 points per game while shooting 47.1% from the field and 42.4% from three-point range. She has been one of Minnesota's most reliable perimeter scorers and becomes an even more important offensive option if the Lynx are without Miles or Collier.
Courtney Williams adds another versatile option, averaging 14.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. Minnesota's depth is one of its greatest strengths because the Lynx do not need one player to dominate every night.
The frontcourt is also anchored by Natasha Howard, who leads Minnesota with 7.8 rebounds per game and provides a physical presence around the basket. Her ability to control the glass could be especially important against Golden State's defense.
Minnesota's advantage in this matchup is offensive efficiency. The Lynx are shooting nearly 49% from the field as a team, compared with 42.2% for Golden State. Even with questions surrounding the availability of Miles and Collier, Minnesota has shown throughout the season that its offensive system can generate quality looks from multiple positions.
Valkyries vs. Lynx Picks
- Spread Pick: Lynx -4.5
Minnesota has been the better team all season and has consistently matched up well against Golden State.
The Lynx have won all three meetings in 2026, and even the most recent matchup was relatively comfortable despite Golden State entering as one of the league's hottest teams. Minnesota's combination of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure has created problems for the Valkyries in every meeting.
The biggest concern is Miles' status. If she is ruled out, the line could shift, and that would make Golden State more appealing. However, assuming Minnesota has enough of its core available, the Lynx's depth and home-court advantage should be enough to produce another victory.
Golden State's defense should keep the game competitive, but Minnesota has simply shown more offensive answers in the season series.
- Over/Under Pick: Under 163.5
The recent head-to-head results point toward a lower-scoring matchup.
The last meeting finished 77-66, and Golden State's defensive identity makes it difficult for opponents to consistently score at a fast pace. The Valkyries are allowing just 76.6 points per game in the available season data, while Minnesota's recent success against Golden State has often been driven by defense and control rather than a wide-open offensive shootout.
The potential absence of Collier and uncertainty surrounding Miles also add another reason to lean toward the Under.
Golden State will likely try to slow Minnesota down, defend physically, and avoid allowing easy transition baskets. Minnesota should still find enough offense to win, but this projects as a competitive game that stays below a relatively high total.
