H1: 2026 World Cup Bracket Picks: Round of 32 Analysis and Picks

By: Alex MacMillan Updated 07/05/2026, 04:52 PM ET

Our 2026 World Cup bracket picks call every knockout match from the Round of 32 all the way to the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19. This is the first World Cup with a Round of 32 after the tournament expanded to 48 teams, which means 16 win-or-go-home matches just to reach the last 16. We have predicted all of them — plus the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a pick to lift the trophy — leaning on how teams have historically performed in knockout football rather than just following the betting favorites. Full tournament coverage lives on our 2026 World Cup picks hub.

The bracket below is our starting projection for the Round of 32. We update this page after every round, locking in the real results and re-predicting the rest of the way. By the final, you will be able to see exactly how the bracket held up.

Our Pick to Win the 2026 World Cup: France

We have France lifting the 2026 World Cup, beating Argentina in the final. No team in the field has been more reliable in knockout matches over the last two decades — France simply win the games they are supposed to win, and they win them convincingly. Argentina reach the final on the back of Lionel Messi's form and a knack for finding a way through tight matches, but their path runs through a lot of close games and penalty shootouts. In a final between the team that wins knockout matches outright and the team that survives them, we trust France. The most fun story of our bracket is Croatia, who we have running all the way to the semifinals as the ultimate bracket-buster.

Round of 32 Bracket Picks: All 16 Matches

The Round of 32 runs June 28 through July 3. Here is who we have advancing in every match, with the reasoning behind each World Cup bracket pick:

  • Canada over South Africa. Canada looked like a different team once Alphonso Davies returned, hammering Qatar 6-0 to close the group stage. South Africa's run to the knockouts has been a great story, but Canada have too much pace and quality up front. We like Canada to come through, potentially after extra time.
  • Germany over Paraguay. Germany grind out knockout matches — low-scoring, controlled, rarely blown open. Paraguay are built to counter, and Germany rarely give counter-attacking teams anything to work with. Expect a tight one, but Germany advance.
  • Morocco over Netherlands — UPSET. Our first big call. Morocco's defense is among the most stubborn in the tournament, and they have a real habit of locking matches down in the second half. The Netherlands tend to get dragged into tight, low-scoring knockout games — exactly the kind Morocco win. We have Morocco through on penalties, a rematch of their 2022 run.
  • Brazil over Japan. Japan are dangerous and pushed the Netherlands hard in the group stage, but Brazil have the firepower to settle this inside 90 minutes. A narrow but clear pick for the five-time champions.
  • France over Sweden — comfortable. France are the strongest knockout side in the field and Sweden have no answer for their attack. This is the most lopsided match of our Round of 32 predictions. France cruise.
  • Norway over Ivory Coast. Erling Haaland has been one of the tournament's top scorers, and Norway have the edge in a match between two sides making the most of their knockout opportunity. Norway move on.
  • Mexico over Ecuador. Mexico's knockout matches tend to be open, high-scoring affairs, and playing at the Estadio Azteca in front of a home crowd is a serious advantage. Ecuador stunned Germany in the group, but we have Mexico winning a goal-filled one.
  • England over DR Congo — comfortable. England have the depth and the attacking talent to win this by multiple goals, and DR Congo are without their most creative player. One of the safest picks on the board.
  • USA over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The co-hosts have home support and the better squad, though Christian Pulisic's fitness is worth watching. We expect an open game and back the USA to come through.
  • Belgium over Senegal. Belgium's knockout matches are usually cagey, low-scoring, and tight — and they rarely let those games slip into a draw. Senegal will make it difficult, but Belgium advance.
  • Croatia over Portugal — UPSET. Croatia are the kings of the knockout grind. They drag opponents into extra time and penalties and almost always come out the other side. Portugal are barely favored, and that is not enough margin against a team this comfortable in a shootout. Croatia through on penalties.
  • Spain over Austria. Spain control matches and starve opponents of chances. With Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams back to full speed, they have the quality to win a tight one. Austria battle, but Spain advance.
  • Algeria over Switzerland — UPSET. Switzerland are one of the most defensively stubborn sides in knockout history, but that same low-scoring style means their matches are coin flips that often reach penalties. We have Algeria pulling the upset from the spot.
  • Argentina over Cape Verde. The defending champions have been ruthless in knockout matches and Messi is in vintage form. Cape Verde's fairytale ends here against a side that scores in bunches.
  • Colombia over Ghana. Colombia topped a group containing Portugal and have the edge in quality. Ghana are missing their best attacker, which tips a close match Colombia's way.
  • Australia over Egypt — UPSET. The closest match of the entire Round of 32, with barely anything separating the two on the odds. In a true coin-flip knockout game, we lean Australia to edge it late or on penalties.

That is four upsets in our Round of 32 predictions — Morocco, Croatia, Algeria, and Australia — and they all share a theme. Each one is a team that thrives in the tight, tense, low-scoring matches that get decided in extra time and penalties, where being the favorite means very little.

Round of 16 Bracket Picks

Based on how we see the Round of 32 shaking out, here are our Round of 16 predictions:

  • Morocco over Canada. Morocco's defensive grit carries them past a Canada side without the knockout experience to break them down.
  • France over Germany. The match of the round. Germany are dangerous, but France are the better knockout team and we trust them in a heavyweight clash.
  • Brazil over Norway. A close one, but Brazil's quality edges a Norway side that has overperformed to get here.
  • England over Mexico. England's depth and tournament pedigree see off a Mexico team running out of road.
  • Croatia over Spain — UPSET. Two sides that both love a tight game, which only plays into Croatia's hands. Another penalty-shootout win keeps their run alive.
  • Belgium over USA. Belgium's knockout know-how proves too much for the co-hosts.
  • Argentina over Australia. The champions handle Australia's fairytale run and move into the quarterfinals.
  • Colombia over Algeria. Colombia have the better squad and end Algeria's improbable journey.

Quarterfinal Bracket Picks

  • France over Morocco. Morocco keep it close, like they always do, but France have too much in attack.
  • Croatia over Belgium — UPSET. Belgium hate drawing matches, but Croatia force exactly that and win another shootout. The dream run reaches the semifinals.
  • England over Brazil. A genuine toss-up that we lean England, who have looked the steadier knockout side.
  • Argentina over Colombia. Messi and the champions grind out a tight one to reach the final four.

Semifinal Bracket Picks

  • France over Croatia. Croatia make it tense, as they have all tournament, but France finally end the run and reach the final.
  • Argentina over England. A classic that we see going the distance, with Argentina edging through to set up a blockbuster final.

Final Pick: France over Argentina

Our 2026 World Cup final is France against Argentina at MetLife Stadium — and we have France winning it. France have been the most convincing knockout team in the world for the better part of a decade, and in a final that may well come down to fine margins, we back the side that wins these games outright over the side that survives them. France lift the trophy.

How Our Bracket Picks Update Each Round

This is a living bracket. Right now it is our full projection for a knockout stage that has not started yet, so every pick beyond the Round of 32 assumes our earlier predictions come true. After the Round of 32 finishes on July 3, we lock in the actual results and re-predict the rest of the bracket from there. We do the same after the Round of 16, the quarterfinals, and the semifinals — so the picks sharpen as real results come in and the field narrows toward the July 19 final.

World Cup Bracket Picks FAQ

How do you make your World Cup bracket picks?

We base every pick on how teams have actually performed in World Cup knockout matches — not just who the betting favorite is. Some teams are dangerous in tight, win-or-go-home games and others fade, and that history is often a better guide than the odds. It is why our bracket has four Round of 32 upsets: each underdog has a real edge in the kind of tense, low-scoring match that gets decided late or on penalties.

Why pick Croatia to go so far?

Croatia are not the most talented team left in the bracket, but they may be the best at winning knockout matches. They have a long history of drawing tight games and coming out on top in extra time and penalties — which is exactly how deep tournament runs are made. We have them reaching the semifinals as our bracket-buster.

Are the Round of 32 picks the hardest to call?

Yes. This is the first World Cup with a Round of 32, so there is no history for the round itself, and some matchups are huge mismatches — France against Sweden, England against DR Congo — while others are near coin flips. The later rounds, with more even matchups, are where the knockout history we lean on tends to be the most reliable guide.

When does the bracket update for the next round?

We refresh this page after every round. Once the Round of 32 wraps up on July 3, we lock in the results and re-predict the Round of 16 onward. The same happens after each round through to the final, so the bracket is always current with the latest results.
