Astros Lead AL West Elimination Watch | Kalshi Promo Code
The final four days of the 2026 MLB regular season have turned into an elimination watch.
Houston and Texas are tied atop the American League West. Baltimore, Seattle and Arizona are fighting to keep their seasons mathematically alive. Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Diego and the Cubs all have opportunities to lock down postseason spots.
And several of those outcomes can happen Thursday.
The Houston Astros remain the strongest prediction-market story. Kalshi traders have recently priced Houston at roughly a two-in-three chance to reach the postseason, with Texas around one-in-three, after the market favored the Rangers earlier this week.

The reason is simple: Houston and Texas entered Thursday tied at 78-80, and the Astros own the head-to-head tiebreaker.
But the AL West is only part of the chaos.

MLB Playoff Chances Entering September 24
The postseason field is mostly established, but the remaining races are concentrated enough that almost every meaningful result Thursday can trigger another consequence elsewhere.
Chicago entered the day holding the final American League Wild Card position, three games ahead of Texas and 3.5 games ahead of Baltimore.
Houston and Texas were tied atop the AL West at 78-80.
In the National League, Arizona remained the final serious outsider, sitting three games behind both Chicago and Philadelphia in the Wild Card race.
That creates three different kinds of pressure Thursday.
Baltimore and Seattle can be eliminated.
Arizona can be eliminated depending on multiple results.
Chicago, Cleveland, the Cubs, Padres and Phillies all have clinching scenarios.
Baltimore Orioles Could Be Eliminated Before Playing Again
Baltimore entered Thursday at 78-81 with only three games remaining.
That makes 81 wins the Orioles' absolute ceiling.
Baltimore does own the tiebreaker over the White Sox, which is the only reason the Orioles entered Thursday with any mathematical life remaining.
But Chicago began the day at 81-77.
That makes Baltimore's equation extremely simple.
If the White Sox win Thursday, Baltimore is eliminated.
At the latest afternoon check, Chicago was already leading Kansas City 6-0.
If that result holds, the White Sox will reach 82 wins, clinch a postseason berth and immediately push Baltimore out of the playoff race.
The Orioles do not control their own fate anymore.
Their season can end based entirely on a game happening in Kansas City.
Seattle Mariners Need a Three-Game Miracle Thursday
Seattle's situation is even more extreme.
The Mariners entered Thursday at 74-84 with four games remaining, meaning they can finish no better than 78-84.
Houston and Texas are already sitting at 78 wins.
Seattle still has a mathematical route to the AL West because of the league's tiebreaker structure.
The Mariners own the tiebreaker over Houston.
Texas, however, owns the tiebreaker over Seattle.
For Seattle to remain alive through Thursday, the Mariners effectively need three results to cooperate:
Seattle must beat the Angels.
Oakland must beat Houston.
The Mets must beat Texas.
If Seattle loses, the Mariners are eliminated.
If either Houston or Texas reaches 79 wins, Seattle can no longer catch that club.
Thursday night is therefore essentially a three-game survival parlay for Seattle.
Anything short of all three results going its way can end the Mariners' season.
Diamondbacks Face Their Own Elimination Scenario
Arizona is the last meaningful National League outsider.
The Diamondbacks entered Thursday at 84-74, three games behind the Cubs and Phillies and four games behind San Diego.
Arizona owns the head-to-head tiebreaker against Philadelphia but loses the tiebreaker against Chicago.
That creates a clean elimination scenario Thursday:
Arizona loses at Colorado and Philadelphia beats Milwaukee.
If the Diamondbacks lose, their maximum possible record becomes 87-75.
San Diego already has 88 wins.
Chicago already has 87 wins and owns the tiebreaker against Arizona.
A Philadelphia victory would give the Phillies 88 wins.
At that point, all three National League Wild Card positions would be unreachable for Arizona.
Astros and Rangers Are in an AL West Knife Fight
Then there is the race that may produce the biggest prediction-market swings of the day.
Houston: 78-80.
Texas: 78-80.
Houston owns the season-series tiebreaker after beating Texas 9-4 head-to-head.
That means a tie in the standings at the end of Sunday favors the Astros.
Texas needs to finish ahead of Houston rather than merely matching the Astros' record.
That distinction is a major reason the prediction market moved toward Houston after Texas had been favored earlier this week.
Kalshi had Texas around 60% to reach the playoffs Tuesday while Houston sat in the low-40% range.
By Thursday, that advantage had flipped, with Houston trading around the high-60% range and Texas around one-in-three.
There is no Game 163 under MLB's current format. Head-to-head results decide the first postseason tiebreaker.
Mets-Rangers Sets the Stage for Houston Tonight
Texas gets the first move Thursday.
The Rangers are hosting the New York Mets in an afternoon game at Globe Life Field.
At the latest live check, Texas held a 2-1 lead.
That makes the afternoon result enormous for Houston.
A Texas victory would move the Rangers to 79 wins and force Houston to respond later Thursday against Oakland.
A Texas loss would give the Astros an opportunity to take outright control of the AL West race with a victory.
Houston begins a four-game road series against the Athletics Thursday night.
Whatever happens in Arlington changes the stakes before the Astros take the field.
White Sox and Guardians Can Both Punch Tickets
Chicago's early lead over Kansas City carries consequences beyond Baltimore.
The White Sox can clinch a postseason berth simply by winning Thursday.
Chicago also remains only one game behind Cleveland in the AL Central and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Guardians.
That means the division remains very much alive even if Chicago clinches at least a Wild Card spot.
Cleveland has its own clinching paths Thursday.
A Guardians victory over Boston secures a postseason berth.
Cleveland can also clinch if Texas loses or Houston loses, because either result would reduce the maximum number of wins available to one of the remaining AL threats.
So Thursday afternoon and evening could eliminate Baltimore while simultaneously confirming both AL Central clubs as postseason teams.
Cubs, Padres and Phillies Have Clinching Scenarios
The National League has more teams trying to clinch than simply trying to survive.
The Cubs can secure their postseason berth with a win over Miami or an Arizona loss.
San Diego can clinch with a win against the Dodgers or an Arizona loss.
Philadelphia's scenario requires two results.
The Phillies can clinch with a win over Milwaukee combined with either an Arizona loss or a San Diego loss.
That makes Arizona's afternoon game in Colorado relevant to nearly every remaining National League Wild Card team.
A Diamondbacks loss would not merely hurt Arizona.
It would simplify the clinching scenarios for Chicago and San Diego and could set Philadelphia up to secure its own berth later in the evening.
Eight MLB Games That Matter Most Thursday
If you're following the playoff picture Thursday, these are the games carrying the biggest immediate consequences:
- White Sox at Royals: Chicago can clinch. A White Sox win eliminates Baltimore. Chicago was leading 6-0 at the latest afternoon check.
- Mets at Rangers: Texas is fighting Houston for the AL West and was leading 2-1 at the latest check.
- Diamondbacks at Rockies: Arizona is fighting to keep its season alive.
- Brewers at Phillies: A Philadelphia win can combine with an Arizona loss to eliminate the Diamondbacks.
- Guardians at Red Sox: Cleveland can clinch while trying to protect a one-game AL Central lead over Chicago.
- Astros at Athletics: Houston's result could completely reshape the AL West and potentially eliminate Seattle.
- Angels at Mariners: Seattle must win to preserve any mathematical chance of surviving.
- Padres at Dodgers: San Diego can clinch, and its result also affects Arizona and Philadelphia.
The most immediate domino is still in Kansas City.
If Chicago finishes off the Royals, the White Sox clinch and Baltimore is eliminated.
Why Houston Remains the Biggest Prediction-Market Story
All of Thursday's elimination scenarios are connected to the standings.
Houston-Texas is different because the division race itself remains essentially even.
The teams began Thursday with identical records.
The Astros hold the tiebreaker.
And the loser of the AL West race has a difficult Wild Card path because Chicago currently owns a three-game cushion over both Houston and Texas.
That makes winning the division by far the cleaner postseason route for both clubs.
It also explains why every Rangers and Astros result has the potential to cause a significant shift in the prediction market.
Houston's edge is not based on having a better record.
It is based on holding the tiebreaker in a race where one game may decide everything.

MLB Elimination Watch Could Change by the Hour
Thursday is one of the most consequential days remaining in the MLB regular season.
Baltimore could be eliminated by Chicago.
Seattle needs a near-perfect combination of results to survive.
Arizona can be knocked out if its loss is paired with a Philadelphia victory.
Chicago, Cleveland, the Cubs, Padres and Phillies all have paths to clinch.
And Houston and Texas are tied atop the AL West with four games remaining and a postseason berth potentially riding on the division title.
The standings can change several times before Houston even begins its game in Oakland.
That makes Sept. 24 less about one playoff race than a chain of postseason dominoes happening across the league.
