Can Ben Shelton Win the 2026 U.S. Open? | Polymarket Odds

By: Devin Erickson-Sheehy Published 08/25/2026, 08:05 PM ET

Ben Shelton enters U.S. Open Fan Week as one of the leading American contenders in a men's field that has changed significantly before the singles draw is even released.

Polymarket currently gives Shelton approximately a 7.6% chance to win the 2026 U.S. Open, displayed as 8% on the live market.

That makes Shelton the fourth choice behind Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic.

His case is built around one of the strongest results of the North American hard-court swing. Shelton successfully defended his Montreal title without dropping a set across six matches.

The immediate follow-up was much less convincing.

Jaime Faria defeated Shelton 6-4, 6-4 in his opening Cincinnati match, snapping the American's six-match winning streak.

Several major withdrawals have also changed the championship picture, with Jannik Sinner, Jack Draper, Holger Rune and Joao Fonseca all out of the tournament.

The Ben Shelton U.S. Open winner contract on Polymarket currently trades around an 8% implied probability.

Ben Shelton U.S. Open Chances at 8%

Shelton sits firmly inside the leading group in the men's U.S. Open championship market.

Player Polymarket Chance
Carlos Alcaraz 30%
Alexander Zverev 20%
Novak Djokovic 11%
Ben Shelton 8%

The full men's winner market has attracted more than $10.7 million in trading volume.

Shelton's individual contract has generated roughly $385,000.

An 8% probability still makes Shelton a clear underdog against the entire field.

It also places him among a small group of players that traders currently view as legitimate championship threats.

The gap between Shelton and the top of the board is substantial.

Alcaraz is trading near 30%, while Zverev sits around 20%.

Djokovic is closer to 11%.

Shelton therefore enters New York below the three leading names but clearly established near the front of the next group.

Shelton Defended His Montreal Title Without Losing a Set

Montreal provides the strongest evidence supporting Shelton's current price.

He defeated Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6(4) in the championship match to successfully defend his Canadian Masters title.

The result completed a six-match tournament in which Shelton did not lose a set.

His run included victories over Jenson Brooksby, Zizou Bergs, Joao Fonseca, Jakub Mensik, Learner Tien and Nakashima.

The consistency of the run was as important as the trophy.

Shelton is naturally associated with first-strike tennis, a powerful left-handed serve and the ability to finish points quickly.

Montreal showed that he could combine those weapons with sustained execution across an entire Masters tournament.

He did not need repeated three-set escapes.

He did not lose a set.

That is exactly the type of hard-court form that can move a player toward the front of a Grand Slam futures market.

Cincinnati Loss Adds Volatility to Shelton's Outlook

Shelton's next appearance created the opposite signal.

Jaime Faria beat him 6-4, 6-4 in Cincinnati.

Faria entered the match ranked No. 79 and had never previously defeated a Top 10 opponent.

The result ended Shelton's six-match winning streak immediately after Montreal.

That makes Shelton's current form more complicated than simply labeling him one of the hottest players in the field.

His ceiling was obvious in Montreal.

Cincinnati provided another reminder that his aggressive style can produce volatile results when his serve, return or first-strike execution drops below its best level.

For a player trading around 8%, that distinction matters.

Shelton does not need to be as reliable as Alcaraz to justify his probability.

He does need his peak level to appear frequently enough to survive seven best-of-five-set matches.

Jannik Sinner Withdrawal Opens the Men's Field

The men's championship picture changed dramatically when Jannik Sinner withdrew because of a persistent right knee injury.

Sinner would have been one of the shortest prices in the entire tournament.

His absence removes a player capable of occupying a major share of the championship probability.

Other notable contenders are missing as well.

Jack Draper withdrew with an arm issue.

Holger Rune remains out while recovering from his Achilles injury.

Joao Fonseca withdrew this week because of an abdominal injury.

Those absences do not automatically produce an easy path for Shelton.

A 128-player Grand Slam remains deep, and the top of the field still includes Alcaraz, Zverev and Djokovic.

The withdrawals nevertheless matter.

Every elite or dangerous player removed from the bracket reduces the number of difficult opponents a champion may eventually need to beat.

For a player in Shelton's probability range, that can be meaningful.

Shelton Has Already Reached a U.S. Open Semifinal

Shelton does not have to imagine what a deep run in New York feels like.

He reached the U.S. Open semifinals in 2023.

That breakthrough came during his first full season on the ATP Tour and made him the youngest American man to reach the U.S. Open semifinals since Michael Chang in 1992.

Novak Djokovic ended that run in straight sets.

The result still established Shelton as a player capable of handling the atmosphere, pressure and physical demands of the tournament.

Grand Slam experience becomes particularly important late in the second week.

The environment changes.

Matches become more difficult to close.

Night sessions inside Arthur Ashe Stadium can create a very different atmosphere from an ordinary tour event.

Shelton has already experienced those conditions during a major run in New York.

Why Shelton's Game Works at the U.S. Open

Shelton's serve gives him an obvious weapon on hard courts.

When his first serve is landing consistently, opponents can struggle to generate enough return opportunities to pressure his service games.

The left-handed delivery also creates different return patterns than players see against the majority of the tour.

That can be especially valuable against opponents who have had limited time to prepare for him.

The serve alone is not enough to win a Grand Slam.

Shelton's progress has increasingly depended on what happens after the first shot.

His best performances now feature more controlled aggression from the baseline, better point construction and the willingness to stay in rallies when an immediate winner is not available.

Montreal was encouraging because those elements held together for six consecutive matches.

If that version of Shelton appears in New York, his 8% market price becomes easier to understand.

The U.S. Open Draw Is the Next Major Catalyst

There is no legitimate Shelton draw path to analyze yet.

The men's singles draw will be revealed Thursday, August 27.

Main-draw singles begins Sunday, August 30.

That makes the draw the next major event capable of moving Shelton's Polymarket probability before the tournament begins.

A favorable quarter could allow him to avoid one of the leading favorites until late in the tournament.

A difficult section could immediately make the current 8% price look aggressive.

The placement of Alcaraz, Zverev and Djokovic will be particularly important.

So will the distribution of dangerous players outside the top four.

Until the actual bracket is released, assigning Shelton a specific semifinal or quarterfinal opponent would be speculation.

Is Ben Shelton the Best American Chance to Win?

Shelton has emerged as one of the central figures in the latest American attempt to end the country's long men's singles drought at the U.S. Open.

His appeal is straightforward.

He has already reached a semifinal in New York.

He arrives with a recent Masters title on the same surface.

His serve gives him the ability to control matches without needing to dominate every baseline exchange.

The Cincinnati loss prevents the outlook from becoming too comfortable.

Shelton remains capable of producing a poor match against an opponent he is expected to beat.

That volatility is part of the reason his probability remains in the single digits rather than approaching the Zverev tier.

What Could Raise Shelton's U.S. Open Chances?

The first opportunity comes Thursday.

A favorable draw could immediately improve Shelton's path.

His probability could also rise if the opening rounds confirm that the Montreal version of his game has returned.

Strong serving numbers would be particularly important.

Shelton becomes much more difficult to eliminate when opponents are forced to hold serve repeatedly without receiving many opportunities to break him.

Market movement from other contenders matters as well.

If another leading player struggles physically or exits early, probability flows toward the remaining contenders.

That type of tournament attrition can create significant movement in an outright winner market.

What Could Send Shelton's Polymarket Price Lower?

A difficult draw is the clearest immediate risk.

Being placed in a section with another elite hard-court player could lower his championship probability before a ball is struck.

The Cincinnati performance is another concern.

Shelton cannot afford repeated stretches where his aggressive game produces errors without enough free points from the serve to compensate.

Best-of-five tennis gives top players more time to solve problems than an ordinary tour match.

That can help Shelton recover from a slow start.

It can also give experienced opponents more time to adjust to his serving patterns and force him into longer exchanges.

His current 8% probability therefore reflects a substantial ceiling without pretending the path is stable.

How the Ben Shelton Polymarket Contract Works

The Shelton contract is part of Polymarket's 2026 men's U.S. Open winner market.

A Yes position reflects the view that Shelton will officially win the tournament.

If Shelton wins the men's singles championship, winning Yes shares resolve at $1.

If another player wins, the Shelton Yes side resolves at $0.

The displayed market percentage comes from the trading price and can change as participants buy and sell positions.

That means 8% should be viewed as a live market estimate rather than a fixed prediction.

The percentage can move because of the draw, injury news, opening-round results or changes in how traders assess Shelton relative to the rest of the field.

Will Ben Shelton Win the 2026 U.S. Open?

Shelton has a realistic championship case without being close to the tournament favorite.

Polymarket currently places his probability around 7.6%, displayed as 8%.

That leaves him behind Alcaraz, Zverev and Djokovic but firmly inside the leading group of contenders.

The positive case is substantial.

Shelton just completed a dominant Montreal title defense without dropping a set.

He has already reached a U.S. Open semifinal.

Several dangerous players, including Sinner, Draper, Rune and Fonseca, have withdrawn.

The caution comes from Cincinnati, where Faria stopped Shelton immediately after his Montreal championship.

That result reinforces the volatility that remains part of Shelton's profile.

Thursday's draw should provide the next major piece of information.

Until then, an 8% Polymarket probability presents Shelton as a serious American championship threat without putting him in the same tier as the three players currently priced ahead of him.
