Padres Playoff Chances Surge to 84% After 8 Straight Wins

By: Alex MacMillan Published 09/15/2026, 06:45 PM ET

The San Diego Padres have become one of the biggest movers in the MLB playoff prediction market as an eight-game winning streak transforms the National League Wild Card race.

Polymarket currently gives San Diego approximately an 84% chance of reaching the 2026 MLB postseason.

That number was around 56% only four days ago, representing an approximately 28-percentage-point jump as the Padres have created meaningful separation from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

San Diego enters Tuesday night at 82-68, just one game behind Philadelphia for the second NL Wild Card and 2.5 games ahead of Arizona for the final postseason position.

Padres Playoff Chances Reach 84% on Polymarket

San Diego's postseason market has changed dramatically in less than a week.

The current MLB postseason board shows the Padres at roughly:

  • 84% to make the playoffs
  • Yes shares around 85 cents
  • More than $11,000 traded on the Padres outcome

Four days ago, the same market had San Diego around 56%.

That means the Padres have moved from something close to a coin-flip postseason proposition to a substantial favorite to play in October.

The move coincides with one of the hottest stretches by any contender on the board.

San Diego Has Won Eight Straight Games

The Padres extended their winning streak to eight games Monday with an 8-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

San Diego built an early lead before Colorado made the game uncomfortable late, but the Padres held on behind another productive night from their lineup.

Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. both homered, while Jackson Merrill and Ty France each collected three hits.

Closer Mason Miller finished the game for his 37th save.

The win improved San Diego to 82-68 and continued a run that has rapidly changed the postseason picture.

The Padres were 1.5 games ahead of Arizona for the final Wild Card after their sixth consecutive victory Saturday.

By Monday night, the cushion had grown to 2.5 games.

With fewer than two weeks remaining in the regular season, that additional game of separation has considerably more value than it would have earlier in the year.

Padres Now Lead Diamondbacks by 2.5 Games

Arizona is still alive.

The Diamondbacks produced their own dramatic result Monday when Corbin Carroll hit a walk-off two-run homer to beat Miami 8-7.

Arizona improved to 80-71 with the victory.

But winning was only enough to keep pace with San Diego.

The Padres remain 2.5 games ahead for the third and final National League Wild Card position.

That gap helps explain the divergence in the prediction market.

Polymarket currently places San Diego around 84% to reach the postseason while Arizona has fallen into the low-20% range.

Only a few days ago, the two teams were much closer.

The market is now pricing San Diego as the clear favorite to secure the final NL spot.

San Diego Is Also Chasing Philadelphia

The Padres are no longer simply looking behind them.

Philadelphia enters Tuesday at 83-67, only one game ahead of San Diego in the Wild Card standings.

That gives the Padres an opportunity to improve their playoff position rather than merely protect the third spot.

Moving into the second Wild Card could affect where San Diego opens the postseason and which opponent it faces.

The Cubs remain ahead of both clubs, but the Phillies-Padres gap has become small enough to matter over the final stretch.

That makes every San Diego game relevant to both sides of the Wild Card bracket.

Why Padres Playoff Odds Have Moved So Quickly

Late-season prediction markets can reprice teams dramatically because the number of remaining games is shrinking.

An eight-game winning streak in May can improve a team's outlook.

An eight-game winning streak in the middle of September can completely change its postseason path.

San Diego has combined wins with direct separation from Arizona.

The Padres completed a three-game sweep of San Francisco over the weekend before taking Monday's opener in Colorado.

That stretch turned what had recently been a close Wild Card fight into a more comfortable San Diego advantage.

The market movement reflects that change.

At approximately 56%, traders were treating San Diego's playoff chances as only modestly better than a coin flip.

At 84%, the Padres are now being priced as a team expected to qualify, even though their berth is not yet clinched.

How the Polymarket MLB Postseason Market Works

Polymarket offers individual Yes/No outcomes for teams attempting to reach the 2026 MLB postseason.

The San Diego outcome resolves Yes if the Padres officially clinch one of the National League's six playoff positions.

A contract priced around 84 to 85 cents represents an approximate market-implied probability in the mid-80% range.

If San Diego qualifies, winning Yes contracts settle at $1.

If the Padres miss the playoffs, Yes contracts settle at zero.

The market uses official MLB information and team announcements as primary resolution sources.

Prices can move continuously as regular-season games are completed.

Padres Still Have Work to Do

An 84% market probability is strong.

It is not a clinch.

Arizona remains only 2.5 games back and has enough games remaining to erase that deficit if San Diego cools off.

The Padres also have to manage a pitching staff and bullpen that have carried a heavy workload during the winning streak.

Colorado nearly erased a large deficit Monday, turning a comfortable early San Diego advantage into an 8-7 finish.

That provides a reminder that even a hot team can quickly lose ground during the final two weeks.

San Diego's advantage is meaningful because it gives the club some room for error.

It does not eliminate the possibility of a late Arizona run.

Padres vs Rockies Is the Next Market Test

San Diego continues its series in Colorado Tuesday night.

A ninth consecutive win would give the Padres another opportunity to strengthen their Wild Card position before the schedule turns over again.

Colorado enters the game with one of the weakest records in the National League, which creates a favorable opportunity on paper.

But Coors Field produced a high-scoring, one-run game Monday, and the Rockies nearly completed a major comeback.

The Padres therefore have another chance to show that the eight-game run can continue rather than simply protecting what they have already gained.

What Could Push Padres Playoff Chances Higher?

The most obvious catalyst is simply more wins.

San Diego has already moved roughly 28 percentage points in four days, showing how sensitive the market has become to every result.

A continuation of the winning streak combined with an Arizona loss could move the Padres closer to a near-lock.

San Diego could also benefit from overtaking Philadelphia for the second Wild Card.

Doing that would not merely strengthen the probability of reaching October.

It would improve the Padres' postseason seeding outlook.

The opposite scenario would reopen the race.

A short San Diego losing streak combined with consecutive Arizona victories could quickly reduce the current 2.5-game cushion.

That is why the market remains below 100%.

Padres Playoff Chances: The Bottom Line

San Diego has become one of the strongest movers in the MLB postseason market.

The Padres have won eight consecutive games, improved to 82-68 and opened a 2.5-game advantage over Arizona for the final National League Wild Card spot.

Polymarket has responded accordingly.

San Diego's postseason probability has climbed from roughly 56% four days ago to approximately 84% Tuesday.

That is an increase of about 28 percentage points in less than a week.

The Padres have not clinched anything yet, but the market now views San Diego as the clear favorite to hold one of the National League's remaining postseason spots.

Current Padres playoff probability: approximately 84% on Polymarket.
