Trump Pope Leo Meeting Chances at 9% | Polymarket Promo Code

By: Alex MacMillan Published 08/17/2026, 05:15 PM ET

The Polymarket market on who Donald Trump will meet with in 2026 gives Pope Leo XIV a 9% chance of meeting the president before the end of the year.

Pope Leo's contract currently shows a 9-cent Buy Yes price and a 92-cent Buy No price. More than $25,000 has been traded specifically on the Pope Leo outcome, while the broader "Who will Trump meet with in 2026?" market has attracted more than $854,000 in trading volume.

The low probability comes with just over four months remaining in the year and no Trump-Leo meeting currently announced on the Vatican's public schedule. The two have never met, despite a year of unusually visible tension between the White House and the first U.S.-born pope.

Trump Pope Leo Meeting Chances Sit at 9%

Polymarket currently gives Pope Leo XIV a 9% probability of meeting Trump before December 31, 2026.

The Pope Leo contract shows $25,658 in trading volume, with Buy Yes at 9 cents and Buy No at 92 cents at the latest check.

That places Leo well behind several other figures in Polymarket's broader Trump meeting market.

Mohammed bin Salman leads the active listed possibilities at 68%, while Vladimir Putin is at 39% and Aleksandr Lukashenko at 28%. Pope Leo sits much farther down the board.

The market is therefore treating a Trump-Leo encounter as possible, but clearly not expected.

There is still enough time for a diplomatic meeting to be arranged before the end of December. Presidential and Vatican schedules can change quickly, particularly around international summits, overseas travel and major geopolitical developments.

For now, however, traders overwhelmingly favor No.

Donald Trump and Pope Leo Have Never Met

Trump and Pope Leo have not met since Leo became pope in May 2025.

Their relationship has instead developed through public statements, Vatican diplomacy and contacts between senior members of the Trump administration and the Holy See.

That distinction became especially important during the spring.

Leo became increasingly outspoken about war, immigration and international diplomacy, including criticism of the U.S.-Israeli war involving Iran. Trump responded publicly, creating a rare direct conflict between a sitting American president and the first U.S.-born pope.

Leo later tried to lower the temperature.

Speaking to reporters in April, he rejected the idea that he wanted an ongoing personal debate with Trump and emphasized that his focus was on the Church's message of peace, justice and dialogue.

The public disagreements nevertheless created a very different backdrop from the traditionally ceremonial relationship between an American president and a pope.

Marco Rubio Met Pope Leo in May

The most important direct diplomatic contact between the Vatican and the Trump administration came through Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Rubio met Leo at the Vatican in May during a visit that drew significant attention because of the public tension between Trump and the pope.

The Vatican said the two sides had renewed their commitment to improving bilateral relations.

That carefully chosen language stood out.

Vatican observers noted that official statements after diplomatic meetings normally emphasize strong or satisfactory relations. The decision to focus instead on improving the relationship was widely interpreted as evidence that significant disagreements remained.

The meeting showed that communication between Washington and the Holy See was continuing even during the public dispute.

It did not, however, produce an announced Trump-Leo meeting.

Pope Leo's Current Travel Schedule Does Not Include Trump

Leo already has a substantial international schedule planned for the remainder of 2026.

The Vatican's August calendar includes his regular general audiences along with pastoral visits to Rimini and the Republic of San Marino.

His later international travel is more significant for the Polymarket contract.

Leo is scheduled to visit France from September 25 through September 28, including a visit to UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

He will then make a major South American trip in November.

The Vatican has announced visits to Uruguay from November 6-8, Argentina from November 8-11 and Peru from November 11-17.

Leo has particularly deep ties to Peru. He served for years as bishop of Chiclayo before becoming pope and holds Peruvian citizenship.

None of the currently announced trips includes the United States or a scheduled encounter with Trump.

That does not make a meeting impossible. It does reduce the number of obvious opportunities already visible on the public calendar.

Why Polymarket Traders Are Leaning Toward No

The 9% market probability reflects several factors working against an in-person meeting.

The first is simply the calendar.

August is already underway, and Leo has major travel commitments scheduled for September and November. A meeting would require either another trip, a Trump visit to the Vatican or an encounter around a separate international event.

The second is the political relationship.

Leo has taken positions on war, immigration and international affairs that have generated direct criticism from Trump. Although both sides have continued diplomatic contact, the relationship has not developed into the kind of close public partnership that would make a meeting appear inevitable.

The third is that a presidential-papal encounter is not required for formal U.S.-Vatican diplomacy to continue.

Rubio and other officials can maintain government-level contacts without Trump personally meeting the pope.

That gives both sides avenues for diplomacy even if the two principals never sit down together this year.

What Could Raise Trump Pope Leo Meeting Chances?

A few developments could change the market rapidly.

A White House announcement that Trump plans to visit Rome would immediately create an obvious path toward a Vatican audience.

The same would be true if the Vatican announced a U.S. visit for Leo.

An international summit could also create an opportunity.

Polymarket's rules do not require a formal bilateral meeting. The contract can resolve Yes if Trump and Leo are both present and interact with one another in person.

That means an encounter attached to a larger diplomatic event could qualify even without a traditional White House or Vatican summit.

A major foreign-policy crisis could also change the calculation.

The Vatican regularly uses diplomacy to encourage negotiations during wars and international disputes. If circumstances created a reason for direct presidential-papal discussions, the current 9% probability could move quickly.

How the Trump Pope Leo Polymarket Contract Works

Pope Leo is one outcome in Polymarket's "Who will Trump meet with in 2026?" market.

The contract resolves Yes if Pope Leo XIV and Donald Trump meet between January 1 and December 31, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Polymarket defines a meeting as an encounter where both individuals are present and interact with one another in person.

A phone call would not qualify.

Public comments about one another would not qualify.

Communication through diplomats or administration officials would also not be enough.

Trump and Leo must actually encounter one another in person.

Polymarket says the outcome will be resolved using a consensus of credible reporting.

If December 31 passes without such a meeting, the Pope Leo contract resolves No.

Trump Pope Leo Meeting 2026 Outlook

Polymarket traders currently see a Trump-Leo meeting as a long shot.

The 9% probability is consistent with a year in which the president and pope have never met, have clashed publicly over major foreign-policy questions and currently have no announced encounter on either side's public schedule.

The remaining calendar still leaves room for a surprise.

A Trump trip to Rome, a new papal journey, a major diplomatic gathering or an unexpected international crisis could all create an opportunity for the two Americans to meet before December 31.

None is currently scheduled.

Until that changes, the market's 9% reading makes the prevailing expectation clear: Trump and Pope Leo are more likely than not to finish 2026 without meeting in person.
