Tampa Bay Rays vs Cleveland Guardians Picks and Predictions for Friday October 16 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/16/2026, 12:10 AM ET

The Tampa Bay Rays are heading back out to Progressive Field on Friday, and I wouldn’t blame them if they’re getting a little tired of Cleveland’s pitching. The Guardians took Game 3 by a 3-2 score Thursday afternoon, giving them a 2-1 lead in the American League Championship Series. Tampa Bay managed just three hits. Three. That’s not going to win many playoff games, especially against a Cleveland bullpen that’s been making life miserable for hitters. Game 4 is scheduled for 6:00 PM ET in Cleveland, although the weather could cause problems and the time could change until 8:00 PM ET if Milwaukee sweeps the Dodgers. Rain is in the forecast, with temperatures dropping into the 50s and winds around 15 to 18 mph. The Guardians are slight favorites around -118, with Tampa Bay at -102 and the total at 6.5 runs. I actually like the Rays to bounce back here. Cleveland has been getting some tremendous pitching, but I’m not convinced the Guardians can keep asking their bullpen to carry this much of the load. Starting Pitchers: Nick Martinez vs Tanner Bibee

Tampa Bay is expected to give Nick Martinez the ball Friday, and that’s a pretty good place to start if you’re trying to even a playoff series. Martinez went 15-6 during the regular season with a 3.10 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 109 strikeouts over 180 innings. He’s not a guy who’s going to blow everybody away with overpowering stuff, but he doesn’t hand out many free passes either. Just 26 walks all season. Against a Cleveland lineup that hasn’t exactly been tearing the cover off the ball, that’s important. His postseason numbers aren’t quite as pretty, with a 4.91 ERA over 3.2 innings, but that’s hardly enough work to throw out everything he accomplished during the regular season.

Cleveland’s pitching situation is a little more interesting. Tanner Bibee is listed as the projected starter by some outlets, but the Guardians could end up going with a bullpen game instead. Bibee has pitched just one-third of an inning this postseason and allowed two earned runs, leaving him with an ugly 54.00 ERA. I’m not putting much stock in that number. One bad appearance doesn’t tell you much about a pitcher. What bothers me more is Cleveland having to piece together another nine innings after Thursday’s game. The Guardians used five pitchers to get through Game 3, and while they were outstanding, those innings eventually start adding up. If Bibee does start, Cleveland needs him to give them some length. Otherwise, we’re looking at another afternoon or evening of the bullpen trying to hold everything together.

Tampa Bay Rays Need Their Bats To Wake Up

Tampa Bay finished the regular season 98-64, including 43-38 on the road, and the Rays have gone 4-2 in the playoffs. They swept the Yankees in three games, but Cleveland has been a different story. The Rays lost Game 1 by a 7-3 score, bounced back with a 3-1 win Tuesday, and then managed practically nothing at the plate Thursday. They had a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning before Cleveland answered with a two-run homer in the fifth. That was it. The Rays couldn’t get another run across, and now they’re staring at a 2-1 series deficit. Tampa Bay won five of six meetings with Cleveland during the regular season, so it’s not as though the Guardians have been an impossible matchup all year. But October baseball has a funny way of making those regular-season numbers feel pretty distant.

The Rays hit .258 during the regular season with 169 home runs, 736 runs scored, and a .728 OPS. They were one of the better hitting teams in baseball, and their pitching staff wasn’t bad either, finishing with a 3.70 ERA. But look at what’s happened in this series. Tampa Bay has scored just five runs across games 2 and 3, with only three hits Thursday. Cleveland’s pitchers struck out 13 Rays hitters in Game 3. That’s a lot of wasted trips to the plate. The Rays have the better regular-season offensive numbers, but right now they’re having trouble putting together anything resembling a sustained rally.

Tampa Bay has been getting some production from its lineup, but the big bats haven’t done enough in this series. The team’s leading run producer during the regular season helped carry an offense that scored 736 runs, yet the top of the order went a combined 1-for-12 Thursday. That’s not going to cut it. The Rays have also lost Shane McClanahan for the remainder of the postseason because of a forearm injury, and Ryan Pepiot remains sidelined with a hip problem. That takes away some pitching flexibility, although Martinez gives them a capable option Friday. Tampa Bay still has the arms to compete in this series. What they need now is somebody to start hitting the baseball.

Cleveland Guardians Keep Finding Ways To Win

Cleveland went 85-77 during the regular season and 41-40 at Progressive Field, but the Guardians have been a completely different bunch in October. They were down 2-0 against the White Sox in the Division Series and came back to win three straight. Now they’ve taken two of the first three against Tampa Bay. Thursday’s 3-2 victory was another one of those games where Cleveland didn’t do anything spectacular offensively, but they did just enough. Six hits, three runs, and a whole lot of pitching. The Guardians scored the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning and let their bullpen take care of the rest. It’s not always pretty baseball, but who cares when you’re winning playoff games?

Cleveland hit .239 during the regular season, scored 678 runs, and finished with a .696 OPS. Those aren’t numbers that make you think of a World Series contender. The pitching has been the difference. The Guardians finished the regular season with a 3.77 ERA and 1,530 strikeouts, and they’ve carried that into October. Through eight playoff games, Cleveland’s pitchers have struck out 102 hitters. That’s an MLB record for that many postseason games. The bullpen has been especially good, but here’s where things get interesting. Cleveland used four relievers Thursday after getting five innings from its starter. Those guys have been terrific, but you can’t keep expecting the bullpen to throw four or five scoreless innings every night. At some point, somebody has to give them a break.

Cleveland’s offense has gotten timely contributions rather than overwhelming opponents with hits. Their leading postseason run producer helped carry them through the Division Series, and the Guardians have been getting enough from the bottom of the order to keep rallies alive. The pitching staff has been the real story. Cleveland’s Game 3 starter struck out nine over five innings, while the closer recorded the final four outs and now has a 1.00 ERA with 13 strikeouts in nine postseason innings. That’s impressive stuff. The Guardians don’t have any major injuries reported heading into Friday, although their pitching availability is worth watching after Thursday’s workload. Cleveland has been winning with pitching and defense, and I don’t see them suddenly changing that approach now.

Tampa Bay Rays vs Cleveland Guardians Picks and Predictions

Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline (-102)

I’m going with Tampa Bay here, and a lot of it comes down to the pitching situation. Martinez held Cleveland scoreless for 13 innings in two regular-season starts, and that’s not something I’m willing to ignore. Seven shutout innings in one meeting, six in the other. Cleveland didn’t score a single run against him. Now, the Guardians have been playing better baseball lately, and their pitching staff has been outstanding. I’m not arguing with any of that. But the Rays won 98 games during the regular season for a reason, and I don’t think they’re suddenly going to forget how to hit. Cleveland is probably looking at another bullpen game, and asking those relievers to keep throwing scoreless innings is a pretty tall order. The Guardians have already used their bullpen heavily, and Martinez gives Tampa Bay a chance to get through five or six innings without having to scramble. The Rays also won five of six against Cleveland during the regular season. I’m not saying that guarantees anything, but it tells me Tampa Bay knows how to beat this team. At basically even money, I’ll take the Rays to even the series.

Under 6.5 Runs (-110)

I like the under here, although the weather could make things interesting if the wind starts blowing out. Cleveland is expecting some rain Friday, and that could change the pitching plans if there’s a delay. But assuming they get the game in without too much trouble, I don’t see either lineup suddenly putting up a crooked number. Tampa Bay has scored just five runs in the last two games, and Cleveland has managed four. Martinez threw 13 scoreless innings against the Guardians during the regular season, and Cleveland’s bullpen has been almost impossible to score against lately. The Guardians also hit just .239 during the regular season, so we’re not talking about a lineup that’s going to overwhelm anybody with offense. The one concern is Cleveland’s pitching depth. If the bullpen gets stretched too far, things could get ugly in a hurry. Still, I think this looks more like a 3-2 or 4-2 game than a 6-5 shootout. Give me the under 6.5.

Final Picks: Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline (-102) and Under 6.5 Runs (-110)
