Tampa Bay Rays vs Cleveland Guardians Picks and Predictions for Thursday October 15 2026
The Tampa Bay Rays head to Cleveland on Thursday, October 15, 2026, for Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Guardians. First pitch is now scheduled for 1:00 PM ET at Progressive Field, with TBS carrying the game. MLB moved it up from 6:00 because rain is expected Thursday evening. Good call. Nobody wants to sit around waiting for a playoff game to start. The series is tied 1-1 after Cleveland won 7-3 in Game 1 and Tampa Bay came back with a 3-1 win Tuesday. The Guardians are favored around -130, with the Rays getting +110. The total is 6.5 runs. I’m taking Tampa Bay. Cleveland has a good pitcher going, but the Rays have been the better team over the whole season. And getting plus money? I like that. Make sure you check out all of our free MLB picks.
Starting Pitchers
Griffin Jax gets the ball for Tampa Bay. He went 8-10 with a 3.53 ERA during the regular season, striking out 116 in 112⅓ innings. His postseason numbers are a little limited. He’s pitched two innings so far, allowing one earned run with four strikeouts. That’s a 4.50 ERA, but come on, it’s two innings. I’m not going to pretend that tells us everything. The Rays used him mostly as a starter this season, and he had a 3.14 ERA in that role. He’s also had success against Cleveland’s hitters, limiting them to a .221 expected batting average over 65 plate appearances. That’s encouraging. But he’ll need to throw strikes. Cleveland can make you work when runners get on base.
Gavin Williams starts for the Guardians, and he’s been excellent this postseason. He’s 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA, 24 strikeouts and a 0.94 WHIP in 11⅔ innings. Twenty-four strikeouts! That’s ridiculous. He went 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA and 248 strikeouts during the regular season. That’s a serious pitcher. He also threw 5⅔ scoreless innings against Chicago in the Division Series, striking out twelve. The only thing I’d wonder about is the workload. Cleveland has leaned on him quite a bit lately. He’s made two postseason starts and even came out of the bullpen between them. Now he’s going again Thursday. He might be terrific. But I’d be watching how long he lasts.
Tampa Bay Rays Have Been Tough To Beat
Tampa Bay went 98-64 during the regular season and came into the ALCS as the top seed. The Rays swept the Yankees in the Division Series, then split the first two games against Cleveland. Game 1 got away from them late. They lost 7-3 after leading early. That’s frustrating. But Tuesday was a different story. Tampa Bay scored three runs in the fourth inning and made them stand up for a 3-1 win. That’s the kind of baseball I like in October. Get a lead, make the other team earn everything and don’t hand the game away. The Rays also beat Cleveland five times in six regular-season meetings. They know they can win this matchup.

Tampa Bay has been getting excellent pitching throughout the playoffs. The Rays held Cleveland to one run Tuesday after giving up seven in the opener. That’s a pretty good response. Their pitching staff finished the regular season with an ERA around 3.70, and the starters have been especially good lately. The offense hasn’t been scoring ten runs every night, but it hasn’t needed to. Tampa Bay scored three against Cleveland Tuesday, and the bullpen finished the job. That’s the sort of game I expect Thursday. The Rays aren’t going to get a bunch of easy chances against Cleveland’s starter. They need to take advantage when a runner gets on base. Maybe that’s a single with two outs. Maybe somebody draws a walk. Whatever works.
The Rays have been getting contributions from different parts of the lineup. They scored all three runs in one inning Tuesday, taking advantage of a defensive mistake and then getting the big hit. That’s important. You don’t always need a home run to win a playoff game. Tampa Bay also has a few pitching injuries, which could matter if Thursday’s starter doesn’t last very long. The bullpen has done its job so far, but asking it to cover five or six innings isn’t ideal. Cleveland has some dangerous hitters, and they’re capable of putting together a big inning. The Rays can’t give them extra outs. But Tampa Bay has been playing good baseball for weeks, and I think that continues Thursday.
Cleveland Guardians Have Been Getting Timely Hits
Cleveland went 85-77 during the regular season, but the Guardians have been playing much better baseball in October. They came back from a 2-0 deficit against the White Sox in the Division Series, winning three straight to advance. That’s impressive. Then they went to Tampa Bay and won Game 1 of the ALCS, 7-3. They scored seven runs over the final four innings, turning a close game into a comfortable win. Game 2 wasn’t nearly as good. Cleveland lost 3-1 and didn’t get much going against Tampa Bay’s pitching. Still, the Guardians got the split on the road. Now they get three games at Progressive Field. That’s exactly what they wanted coming into the series.
The Guardians finished the regular season with a .239 batting average and 678 runs scored. Tampa Bay hit .258 and scored 736. That’s a decent gap. Cleveland’s pitching has been good enough to keep it competitive, though, with a team ERA around 3.77. The Guardians have also been excellent at getting strikeouts. That matters in October when every baserunner feels important. The problem Tuesday was that Cleveland couldn’t get enough going offensively. One run. Four hits against the opposing starter. Not much to celebrate. Thursday’s game might come down to whether Cleveland can get a couple of early runs instead of waiting until the seventh or eighth inning to do something.
Cleveland has been getting some important hits from different places in the lineup. That’s what helped the Guardians come back against Chicago and win the ALCS opener. But Tuesday showed what happens when those hits don’t come. A defensive mistake also opened the door for Tampa Bay’s three-run inning. That’s the sort of thing you can’t afford in a close playoff series. Cleveland has pitching injuries and has already used its staff pretty heavily to get this far. Its starter Thursday gives it a great chance, but somebody still has to score. The Guardians are back home, and that should help. I just don’t think the home crowd alone makes them worth laying -130.
Tampa Bay Rays vs Cleveland Guardians Picks and Predictions
Moneyline Pick: Tampa Bay Rays +110
I’m taking Tampa Bay at +110. Look, Cleveland’s starter has been terrific. Twenty-four strikeouts in 11⅔ postseason innings. That’s enough to make anybody nervous about betting against him. But the Rays won 98 games during the regular season. Cleveland won 85. Tampa Bay also took five of six from the Guardians before the playoffs. That matters to me. The Rays have been getting good pitching, and they just held Cleveland to one run in Game 2. The concern is Cleveland playing at home with its best available arm on the mound. The Guardians could absolutely win this 2-1. But I like the Rays’ chances of keeping it close, and I’m getting plus money. I’ll take Tampa Bay +110.
Total Pick: Under 6.5 Runs
I’ll take Under 6.5 runs. Cleveland’s starter has a 1.54 postseason ERA and 24 strikeouts. Tampa Bay’s starter has been pretty good against this lineup, too. I know Game 1 finished 7-3, so both offenses are capable of putting up runs. But Game 2 was 3-1, and I think that’s closer to what we’ll see Thursday. The Guardians have been relying on timely hits more than big offensive nights. Tampa Bay hasn’t been scoring a ton either. The thing that worries me is the bullpens. Cleveland has used its pitching staff quite a bit lately, and Tampa Bay has a few injuries. If somebody gets knocked out early, this could turn into a 5-4 game pretty quickly. But with these two starters, I think runs are going to be hard to come by early. I’m thinking 3-2 Rays. Give me the under.
Final Picks: Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline +110 and Under 6.5 Runs.
