Atlanta Hawks vs Orlando Magic Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 21 2026
Atlanta and Orlando spent last season looking like teams that could cause some trouble in the East, then both ended up going home earlier than they wanted. Now they get each other right out of the gate. The Hawks can score, the Magic can make a game miserable when their defense is working, and I’m curious which version shows up Wednesday. Opening night is a funny thing. Everybody thinks they’ve fixed their problems over the summer. Then the ball goes up.
Atlanta visits the Kia Center in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET. The Magic are favored by 2.5 points, with the total at 233.5. You can find more predictions in our free NBA picks.
Atlanta Hawks Have Enough Offense To Make Trouble
Atlanta finished 46-36 last season, and the Hawks were a dangerous team when they got their offense moving. The problem was that they didn’t always bring the same effort defensively. Their final game was a miserable 140-89 loss to New York, which isn’t exactly the kind of memory you want to carry into a new season. The Hawks have had all summer to think about that one. Wednesday gives them a chance to show they learned something.
Atlanta’s offense has been built around ball movement and getting good looks from outside. The Hawks can put points up quickly, but they also have a habit of letting opponents get comfortable. That’s the part that worries me against Orlando. The Magic are going to attack the paint, and Atlanta can’t afford to give away easy baskets while waiting for its three-point shots to fall. The Hawks need to defend without fouling and get the ball up the floor before Orlando’s defense gets set.

Jalen Johnson gives Atlanta a little bit of everything. He can score, rebound, and help run the offense, which makes him a tough matchup for most forwards. The Hawks need him involved early, especially if Orlando makes it difficult to get clean looks from the perimeter. Atlanta also has some injury concerns, including Mouhamed Gueye, who is listed out with a foot injury. That takes away some frontcourt depth against a Magic team that likes to play physically.
Orlando Magic Want To Make This A Fight
Orlando went 45-37 last season and finished 25-15 at the Kia Center. That’s a good home record, and it’s one reason the Magic are favored Wednesday. Orlando hasn’t always been pretty offensively, but the Magic can defend, rebound, and make opponents work. Atlanta would rather get up and down the floor. Orlando would probably prefer a game where every possession feels like a chore.
The Magic have the size to bother Atlanta inside, and they can make things difficult when opponents try to drive. The question is whether Orlando gets enough shooting. That’s been an issue at times. When the outside shots aren’t falling, the Magic can end up trying to force everything through the paint. Atlanta isn’t a great defensive team, so Orlando should have opportunities, but it still has to finish them.
Paolo Banchero is the player Atlanta has to worry about most. He’s strong enough to score inside and skilled enough to create his own shot. Franz Wagner gives Orlando another scoring option. He dealt with a shoulder issue during preseason, but he was left off the injury report for Wednesday’s opener. His availability gives the Magic another creator alongside Paolo Banchero and strengthens their offensive options against Atlanta.
Atlanta Hawks vs Orlando Magic Picks and Predictions
Orlando Magic -2.5 (-110)
I’ll lay the 2.5 with Orlando. Atlanta can score, and the Hawks are good enough to win this game if they get hot from three. But I don’t love the matchup for them. Orlando went 25-15 at home last season, and the Magic have the size to make Atlanta work for points inside. The Hawks have to prove they can defend consistently, especially after the way last season ended. Wagner being cleared for the opener helps Orlando’s case. With another scorer available alongside Banchero, I’ll take the Magic at home.
Under 233.5 Points (-110)
Give me the under 233.5. Atlanta would love to turn this into a track meet, but Orlando isn’t usually interested in helping opponents play that way. The Magic can slow possessions down and force tougher shots. The danger is Atlanta hitting a bunch of threes and pushing the pace early. That could ruin the under in a hurry. But I think Orlando controls enough of the game to keep the score in a more reasonable range. Something around 116-112 looks about right.
Final Picks: Orlando Magic -2.5 (-110) and Under 233.5 Points (-110)
