Charlotte Hornets vs Brooklyn Nets Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 21 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/21/2026, 12:10 AM ET

Charlotte is laying four and a half points on the road. That’s not something we’ve been used to seeing very often, but the Hornets were the better team last season, and Brooklyn is still trying to build something. The funny part is that the Nets beat Charlotte 124-90 in the preseason. Thirty-four points. That’s enough to get anybody’s attention, even if the game didn’t count.

The Hornets visit Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET, with coverage on YES Network and NBA League Pass. Charlotte is favored by 4.5 points, and the total is around 225.5. Check out our free NBA picks for more predictions.

Charlotte Hornets Need To Get Healthy

Charlotte finished last season 44-38. The Hornets showed progress, but their offseason roster changes mean this opener features a different group. They won two of three against the Nets last season, including a 136-117 victory in the first meeting. Charlotte has enough scoring talent to beat Brooklyn again. The problem is figuring out who’s healthy enough to play Wednesday.

The Hornets have some good offensive pieces, but the defense can still be inconsistent. Charlotte’s last two preseason games weren’t pretty. The Hornets lost 114-93 to Boston and 116-98 to Memphis. That’s not a reason to panic, but it does show that the offense can get stuck when shots aren’t falling. Brooklyn isn’t a great defensive team, so Charlotte should get opportunities. The Hornets need to make them count.

Brandon Miller is a central part of Charlotte’s offense, but the Hornets have a different supporting cast this season. LaMelo Ball was traded to Minnesota, with Naz Reid coming to Charlotte. Brooklyn’s defensive preparation needs to account for that revised lineup. Moussa Diabate averaged 8.7 rebounds, but he’s been dealing with an elbow problem. Kon Knueppel has a hamstring issue, and Grant Williams is also on the injury report. Coby White and Grayson Allen have been dealing with problems as well. That’s a lot of uncertainty for a team laying points on the road.

Brooklyn Nets Have A Chance To Surprise Somebody

Brooklyn finished last season 20-62, near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. The Nets enter this season looking for improvement from a revised roster. That’s a long way from being a playoff contender. Brooklyn is still developing its young players, but the Nets have shown a few encouraging signs in preseason. They beat Charlotte 124-90, then followed it with wins over Philadelphia and Washington. The last game was a 144-128 loss to Miami, so the defense still needs work.

The Nets have been playing with pace and trying to get more offense out of their younger players. That’s going to lead to mistakes, but it can also create some easy baskets. Brooklyn doesn’t want to spend the night playing against Charlotte’s set defense. The Nets need to get rebounds and move the ball quickly. If they can make this a game of runs, they have a chance to stay close.

Brooklyn’s rookie guard Mikel Brown Jr. is expected to play under a minutes restriction and won’t start. He’s coming back from an ankle problem, and the coaching staff doesn’t want to rush him. That’s understandable, but it limits the Nets’ options. The Nets have enough scoring to hang around, but they’ll need a better defensive effort than they showed against Miami.

Charlotte Hornets vs Brooklyn Nets Picks and Predictions

Brooklyn Nets +4.5 (-110)

I’ll take Brooklyn and the 4.5 points. Charlotte is the better team when everybody is healthy, but that’s the problem. The Hornets have several players dealing with injuries, and I don’t love laying points on the road with that much uncertainty. Brooklyn already beat Charlotte badly in preseason, although I wouldn’t put too much weight on that result. The Nets are young and can make some ugly mistakes. Still, I think they have enough energy at home to keep this close.

Under 225.5 Points (-110)

I’m going under 225.5. Charlotte’s last two preseason games produced only 207 and 214 combined points, and the Hornets haven’t been getting consistent offense with all the lineup questions. Brooklyn can push the pace, but its young roster is also going to have possessions where the ball ends up in the wrong hands. The danger is both defenses playing poorly and the game turning into a track meet. But I think Charlotte tries to slow things down a little and keep the Nets from getting easy baskets. Something around 112-109 looks reasonable.

Final Picks: Brooklyn Nets +4.5 (-110) and Under 225.5 Points (-110)
