Cleveland Cavaliers vs Atlanta Hawks Picks and Predictions for Thursday October 29 2026
Cleveland has won two straight, but I’m not buying the Cavaliers as an automatic road winner just yet. They needed 125 points to beat Brooklyn by four, then 127 to get past Minnesota by two. That’s fine when you’re at home and the shots are falling. Take that same defense into Atlanta against a Hawks team that likes to get out and run, and you’ve got a different problem.
The Cavaliers visit the Hawks Thursday night at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Tipoff is 8:00 PM ET on NBA TV. Cleveland also plays Washington on Wednesday, so this will be the second game in two nights. Atlanta has Wednesday’s game against Miami, meaning neither team gets a rest advantage. I like the Hawks at home, and I’m looking toward the Over if the total is around 232.5. Get in on all the action before it happens with our free NBA picks.
Cleveland Cavaliers Have Been Winning Some Close Ones
Cleveland entered Wednesday at 2-1, with an 0-1 road record. The Cavaliers opened with a 114-106 loss in Philadelphia before beating Brooklyn 125-121 and Minnesota 127-125. That’s two wins, but not much breathing room in either one. Against Minnesota, Cleveland had to survive a game that went right down to the wire. It counts just the same in the standings, but I’m not ready to call this a team that’s playing great basketball.
The Cavaliers are averaging 119.3 points and allowing 120 through three games. That’s the part I’d worry about. They’ve got plenty of ways to score, and their size makes them dangerous around the basket. But Brooklyn and Minnesota both got into the 120s. Atlanta moves the ball well enough to make Cleveland chase people around, and that could be a headache after the Cavaliers play Washington on Wednesday. Cleveland has to do a better job getting back on defense and keeping opponents from getting second chances.

Donovan Mitchell is averaging 26.7 points, and he’s still the guy Cleveland wants taking the important shots. Evan Mobley is pulling down 9.3 rebounds a game, while James Harden has been handing out seven assists. Jarrett Allen gives Cleveland another big body around the rim. Nae’Qwan Tomlin is out with a back injury, and Khalifa Diop has been dealing with a knee problem. Those aren’t the biggest names on the roster, but missing depth matters when you’re playing two nights in a row.
Atlanta Hawks Need to Stop Trading Baskets
Atlanta is 2-2 entering Wednesday, with an 0-1 home record. The Hawks opened with two wins, including that ridiculous 128-81 beating of Charlotte. Then Houston got them twice, 121-114 in Atlanta and 120-110 in Houston. That’s a rough way to come back to earth. Atlanta looked terrific against Charlotte, but the Rockets showed that the Hawks can be pushed around when the game gets more physical.
Atlanta is scoring 121 points a game and allowing 111.8. The Hawks have also been moving the ball better than most teams, averaging 31.5 assists. That’s what I like about this matchup. Cleveland has the bigger frontcourt, but Atlanta doesn’t need to spend every possession trying to score over those big men. Move the ball, make the defense rotate, and somebody should get a decent look. The Hawks have to take care of the ball, though. Cleveland can turn a bad pass into two quick points.
Jalen Johnson is averaging 21.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 8.5 assists. That’s a lot of the offense running through one guy, and he’s been doing a little of everything. Dyson Daniels has been causing trouble defensively with 3.5 steals per game. Atlanta needs both of them to be sharp because Cleveland has enough scoring to punish mistakes. Mouhamed Gueye is out with a foot injury, and Henri Veesaar is out for the season with a torn ACL. Aaron Wiggins has also been dealing with a knee issue. The Hawks aren’t completely healthy, but their main offensive pieces have been producing.
Cleveland Cavaliers vs Atlanta Hawks Picks and Predictions
Atlanta Hawks Moneyline
I’m taking Atlanta. Cleveland is certainly capable of winning this game, and Mitchell can take over a fourth quarter in a hurry. But the Cavaliers haven’t been stopping people consistently, and I don’t love asking them to play another fast game on the road after facing Washington Wednesday. Atlanta’s ball movement is the difference for me. Johnson can create shots, Daniels can make Cleveland work for every possession, and the Hawks have enough scoring to stay with the Cavaliers. I’d be more comfortable taking Atlanta at a modest price than laying points. Give me the Hawks to win at home.
Over 232.5 — Target Total
I like Over 232.5 if the books hang that number. Cleveland’s first three games have averaged more than 239 combined points, and Atlanta has been scoring 121 a night. Neither defense has looked completely trustworthy. Cleveland has the size to slow things down inside, and that’s the biggest threat to the Over. But the Hawks move the ball quickly, and both teams have enough shooters to make a run without needing ten minutes. I wouldn’t be shocked to see this finish somewhere around Atlanta 121, Cleveland 117.
Final Picks: Atlanta Hawks Moneyline and Over 232.5 (target total)
