Dallas Mavericks vs Houston Rockets Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 21 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/21/2026, 12:45 AM ET

Houston won 52 games last season, and the Rockets are tired of hearing about how promising they are. At some point, you’ve got to win a playoff series. Dallas has a different problem. The Mavericks are trying to put a bad season behind them, and their reward for getting started is a trip to Houston. Eight and a half points is a pretty serious opening-night spread, but I can see why the books put it there.

The Mavericks visit Toyota Center in Houston on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Tipoff is at 8:30 PM ET. The Rockets are favored by 8.5 points, and the total is 230.5. Houston is also a heavy moneyline favorite. Check out our free NBA picks for more predictions throughout the season.

Dallas Mavericks Have A Tough First Assignment

Dallas had a lousy season last year, and the Mavericks didn’t exactly make anybody feel better about things in their final preseason game. Atlanta beat them 135-111. Preseason scores don’t always mean much, but giving up 135 isn’t what you want to see before visiting a Houston team that won 52 games. The Mavericks have some good young talent. They’re also trying to get everybody playing the same way under a new coaching staff.

The problem against Houston starts on the glass. The Rockets have size, they’re physical, and they can make you defend a possession twice if you don’t finish it with a rebound. Dallas needs to take care of the ball, too. Houston’s defense is capable of turning careless passes into easy points. The Mavericks can’t afford to give the Rockets a bunch of extra possessions and expect to hang around.

Cooper Flagg is a big part of what Dallas wants to build, and Kyrie Irving gives the Mavericks an experienced scorer who can get a basket when the offense stalls. But Dereck Lively II is out with a foot injury, and Santi Aldama is also listed out with a knee problem. That’s not ideal against Houston’s frontcourt. Dallas needs somebody to handle the dirty work inside. If the Mavericks start getting beaten to every loose ball, this could get away from them.

Houston Rockets Have Higher Expectations Now

Houston finished 52-30 last season and made the playoffs again. Nice season. The Rockets still went home in the first round, and that’s the part nobody around the team is happy about. They’ve got a good collection of young players, some experienced veterans, and a coach who expects them to defend. The rebuild excuse is gone. Houston is supposed to win games like this.

The Rockets have made their reputation with physical defense and rebounding. They can make an opponent work just to get a decent shot. On offense, Houston has several ways to score. Alperen Sengun can operate inside and pass out of the post, while Amen Thompson gives the Rockets another way to attack the basket. Reed Sheppard provides outside shooting, which matters when opponents start crowding the paint. Dallas is going to have trouble if Houston gets comfortable inside early.

Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams are returning from significant injuries, and the Rockets plan to watch their workloads as the season gets going. Neither is expected to have a formal minutes restriction for the opener, according to the team’s preseason planning. Houston has enough depth to manage that. Kevin Durant gives the offense another experienced scorer, and the Rockets don’t need him taking every shot. Against Dallas, they should be able to get points from several places.

Dallas Mavericks vs Houston Rockets Picks and Predictions

Houston Rockets -8.5 (-113)

I’m laying the 8.5 with Houston. That’s a lot of points for an opener, and Dallas has enough individual scoring talent to make a late run. But the Mavericks are missing frontcourt depth, and that’s a bad matchup against a Rockets team that likes to beat people up on the glass. Houston won 52 games last season and has most of the pieces back. Dallas is still trying to get settled. The Rockets should get enough extra possessions from rebounding and defense to build a decent lead. I’ll take Houston to win by double digits.

Under 230.5 Points (-110)

I’ll go under 230.5. Houston can score, but I think the Rockets would rather win this game by making Dallas uncomfortable than by trading baskets all night. The Mavericks have some offensive talent, but the injuries up front could make it harder to get good shots inside. Houston’s defense should force some difficult possessions. The worry is the Rockets getting out in transition and scoring 125 themselves. That’s possible if Dallas turns the ball over. I still think the Mavericks have trouble reaching the number they’d need to push this game over.

Final Picks: Houston Rockets -8.5 (-113) and Under 230.5 Points (-110)
