Los Angeles Lakers Have the Better Starting Point
Los Angeles comes in 2-0 after opening with victories over Golden State and the Clippers. The Lakers have scored 126 points per game while allowing 111. Two games aren’t much of a sample, but winning both against familiar Pacific Division opponents is a decent way to begin.
The offense has been getting good shots, and that’s the part Utah could have trouble with. The Lakers have enough size to attack inside without depending entirely on outside shooting. They’ve also been able to score when the game slows down. That’s important against a younger opponent that would rather get out and run.

What worries me is the trip to Utah after two home games. The Jazz can make things uncomfortable when they’re pushing the pace, and the altitude is another adjustment. Los Angeles doesn’t need to win by 20 here. It needs to defend well enough to avoid spending the afternoon trading baskets.
Utah Jazz Need More Defensive Stops
Utah is 1-1 after splitting its first two games. The Jazz have averaged 111.5 points while giving up 121. That’s a problem against a Lakers team already averaging 126. Utah can score, but the defense hasn’t shown enough consistency.
The Jazz have some offensive freedom with their younger lineup. That can be dangerous when the outside shots are falling. It also leads to possessions where everybody seems interested in shooting and nobody is particularly interested in getting back on defense.
Utah needs to make Los Angeles work for its points. If the Lakers keep getting into the paint and finding open shooters, the Jazz will have a difficult time staying close. I can see Utah putting together a couple of big scoring runs. Keeping that going for four quarters is another matter.

I’ll lay 4.5 with the Lakers, but I wouldn’t chase this beyond five points. Utah’s defense is giving up too much, and Los Angeles has been efficient enough offensively to take advantage. The Jazz could make this interesting if they’re hitting threes, especially at home. Still, the Lakers have more ways to score and should be better in the half-court game. Take Los Angeles -4.5 or better.
Over 234.5
I lean over 234.5. Los Angeles is averaging 126, and Utah has allowed 121 per game. The Lakers should get plenty of decent looks, while the Jazz will have opportunities to score if the pace picks up. There’s a risk Los Angeles controls the game and slows things down late. But I think both teams can reach the neighborhood of 115 points, with the Lakers doing a little more. Take the over at 234.5 or lower.
