Minnesota Timberwolves vs Miami Heat Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 21 2026
Miami went out and got Giannis Antetokounmpo, so naturally everybody wants to see what the Heat look like with him and Bam Adebayo sharing the floor. I do too. That’s a lot of muscle around the basket. But Minnesota isn’t exactly showing up with a bunch of little guys who are going to get pushed around. The Timberwolves have size of their own, and they beat Miami twice last season. I know the Heat have changed. That doesn’t mean the Wolves forgot how to play basketball.
Minnesota visits Kaseya Center in Miami on Wednesday, October 21, with tipoff at 7:30 PM ET on ESPN. The Heat are favored by 1.5 points, and the total is 243.5. That’s a big number for an opener, even with the way Miami likes to play. Check out our free NBA picks for more predictions.
Minnesota Timberwolves Aren’t Going To Be Easy To Push Around
Minnesota still has Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert, but this is a revised rotation. Adding LaMelo Ball and moving Julius Randle and Naz Reid changes both the backcourt and frontcourt. They beat Miami 125-115 on the road in January, then turned around and beat the Heat 122-94 at home. That second game wasn’t particularly close. Minnesota also won a 125-124 preseason meeting earlier this month. I’m not putting much stock in preseason scores, but the Wolves have had some success against this club. They won’t be intimidated by the new lineup.
The Timberwolves had a 115.6 offensive rating and a 112.5 defensive rating last season. That’s a pretty good combination. They can score without having to run wild every possession, and they have enough size to make life difficult around the basket. Rudy Gobert is going to have his hands full with Miami’s frontcourt, but he’s not going to back away from it. The Wolves need to keep the Heat from getting easy second chances. If Miami starts grabbing offensive rebounds and getting putbacks, that’s where Minnesota could get into trouble.

Anthony Edwards averaged 28.8 points last season, and he’s still the guy Minnesota wants with the ball when it needs a basket. Minnesota’s supporting cast has changed. Julius Randle was traded to Brooklyn, while LaMelo Ball arrived from Charlotte. Ball gives the Timberwolves another ballhandler alongside Anthony Edwards, changing how they can initiate their offense. The Wolves will be without Donte DiVincenzo because of an Achilles injury, which takes away some shooting and depth. That hurts, but Minnesota still has enough players who know their jobs. The returning players provide some continuity, but Minnesota still has to integrate Ball into its offense.
Miami Heat Have Plenty Of Talent, But There’s Only One Basketball
Miami finished 43-39 last season. The Heat could score, averaging 120.9 points a night, but they also allowed 118.5. That’s a lot of baskets going both ways. Now they’ve added Giannis, and everybody is talking about how dangerous this team could be. They’re right. Giannis and Bam together could be a nightmare for opponents trying to defend the paint. But I want to see how it works before I start laying money on Miami. Two great players don’t automatically make a great offense the first time they share the floor.
The Heat had a 116.7 offensive rating and a 114.5 defensive rating last season. They played fast, and sometimes that worked beautifully. Other nights, they couldn’t get enough stops. Minnesota is going to test that defense. Edwards can create his own shot, and Ball gives Minnesota another player who can initiate offense. Miami has to contain their drives without allowing easy opportunities elsewhere. Giannis should help defensively, but there’s going to be some adjustment. Somebody has to decide when to run, when to slow down, and where everybody is supposed to be.
Giannis averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists last season. Bam put up 20.1 points and ten boards. That’s a lot of production from two guys who like operating near the basket. Andrew Wiggins gives Miami another scoring option, and Davion Mitchell can handle the ball. The injury situation is worth watching, though. Giannis has been dealing with a knee issue, and Bam has had a problem of his own. Miami needs both healthy. If either one is limited, the whole idea of this new frontcourt changes.
Minnesota Timberwolves vs Miami Heat Picks and Predictions
Minnesota Timberwolves +1.5 (-105)
I’m taking Minnesota and the 1.5 points. Miami might turn into a terrific team with Giannis, but I’m not paying for what the Heat might become in December. I want to know what they look like Wednesday. Minnesota has established pieces around Edwards, although Ball’s arrival creates an adjustment of its own, Edwards can score against anybody, and Gobert gives the Wolves somebody who can make Giannis work around the basket. The Heat could absolutely win if Giannis takes over and starts living at the foul line. That’s the danger. But the Wolves have been together longer, and I trust them a little more in the first game of the season. Give me Minnesota.
Under 243.5 Points (-110)
I’ll take under 243.5. Look, Miami averaged 120.9 points last season, and Minnesota can score too. I understand why the total is high. But 244 points is a lot to ask for, especially with Miami trying to work a new superstar into the offense. The Wolves have enough size to make the Heat earn their baskets, and I don’t think Minnesota wants to spend the whole night trading layups with Giannis. Miami could push the pace and turn this into a shootout. That’s what worries me. But I expect some possessions where the Heat are still figuring out who gets the ball and where. I think this finishes closer to 119-117 than 130-125.
Final Picks: Minnesota Timberwolves +1.5 (-105) and Under 243.5 Points (-110)
