Philadelphia 76ers vs New York Knicks Picks and Predictions for Tuesday October 20 2026
The Knicks are raising a championship banner Tuesday night, and Philadelphia gets to stand there and watch. That should be fun. New York won its first title in 53 years last season, and the Garden is going to be loud before anybody even touches a basketball. The Sixers have a different kind of story going. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown are both wearing Philadelphia uniforms now. There’s no shortage of talent. Whether all those guys can share one basketball is what I want to see.
Philadelphia visits Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Tipoff is at 7:00 PM ET on NBC and Peacock. New York is favored by 5.5 points, with the total at 231.5. The Knicks have most of their championship team back. Philadelphia has made some big changes, and there’s going to be an adjustment period. Check out our free NBA picks for more predictions.
Philadelphia 76ers Have Plenty Of Names, But Will It Work?
Philadelphia is going to be one of the most interesting teams in the NBA this season. James came over from Los Angeles, Brown arrived from Boston, and now the Sixers have to figure out how everybody fits with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. That’s a lot of guys who are used to having the ball. The Sixers lost 125-120 to Boston in their preseason finale Friday, and while preseason scores don’t mean much, it showed there are still some things to work out defensively.
Philadelphia has enough scoring to give just about anybody trouble. The Sixers can attack inside, shoot from outside, and get to the foul line. But basketball isn’t played with five separate balls. James has spent most of his career running an offense, Brown likes to attack off the dribble, and Embiid needs touches in the post. Maxey isn’t exactly somebody you want standing in the corner all night, either. Somebody has to sacrifice shots. That’s going to take time, and Madison Square Garden on banner night isn’t the easiest place to start figuring it out.

James is 41, but he’s still one of the smartest players in the league. Brown gives Philadelphia another strong wing scorer, and Embiid can make life miserable for New York around the basket if he’s healthy. That’s the big question with the Sixers. Availability has been a concern for their frontcourt, and they need to know what they’re getting before tipoff. Philadelphia can absolutely win this game if everybody is ready. But I don’t love betting on a completely new lineup against a team that already knows how to play together.
New York Knicks Get Their Championship Night
New York is coming off a championship, and the Knicks didn’t spend the summer tearing everything apart. That’s important. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart are still together. They know where everybody wants the ball, who needs help defensively, and what to do when a possession breaks down. The Knicks beat Toronto 122-120 in their final preseason game Thursday, but the bigger story is that they’re opening the season as defending champions.
New York has been one of the tougher teams in the league to play against, and the Knicks have enough offensive talent to score with Philadelphia. Brunson can control the pace, Towns gives them shooting from the frontcourt, and the wings can make things difficult defensively. The Knicks don’t have to spend the first month learning each other’s habits. Philadelphia probably does. That’s the advantage I keep coming back to. New York should be more comfortable running its offense, especially late in a close game.
Brunson is still the guy New York wants with the ball when things get tight. Towns can pull defenders away from the basket, and Bridges and Anunoby give the Knicks length on the perimeter. The Knicks also have to be careful about getting caught up in the banner ceremony. It’s a great night for the fans, but Philadelphia isn’t coming to congratulate them. The Sixers have enough scoring to ruin the party if New York comes out flat. I don’t expect that to happen, though. The Knicks have too much experience together.
Philadelphia 76ers vs New York Knicks Picks and Predictions
New York Knicks -5.5 (-110)
I’m laying the 5.5 with New York. Philadelphia might end up being one of the best teams in the East, but I don’t want to pay for that possibility in its first game together. The Sixers have James, Brown, Embiid, and Maxey, and there’s only one basketball. New York already knows what works. The Knicks are at home, they’re raising a banner, and they’ve got the better-established lineup. The concern is Philadelphia’s talent. If the Sixers start hitting shots, they can stay within this number easily. But I think the Knicks get enough stops late to win by seven or eight.
Under 231.5 Points (-110)
I’ll take the under 231.5. Philadelphia has a lot of offense, and New York can score, too. I get why the total is high. But the Sixers are still learning how to play together, and the Knicks have enough defenders to make them work. New York also has no reason to turn this into a track meet. The Knicks can run their half-court offense, get the matchups they want, and make Philadelphia defend for 20 seconds at a time. The danger is both teams living at the foul line. That can add points in a hurry. But I think the first game is a little rough offensively, and 231.5 feels high.
Final Picks: New York Knicks -5.5 (-110) and Under 231.5 Points (-110)
