Washington Wizards vs Cleveland Cavaliers Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 28 2026
Washington has been better than I expected through four games, but I’m not ready to put the Wizards on the same level as Cleveland. Not yet. The Cavaliers just beat Minnesota 127-125 in overtime, and they’ve got a backcourt that can make life miserable for a defense that doesn’t get back quickly. Washington has enough talent to score, especially with Trae Young running the offense. The problem is keeping Cleveland from scoring right back.
The Wizards visit Rocket Arena in Cleveland on Wednesday, October 28, with tipoff at 7:00 PM ET. The Cavaliers have won two straight after dropping their opener. Washington is coming off a loss at Charlotte. I like Cleveland to win and would lay up to 7.5 points. For the total, I’d look at Over 226.5. Those are target numbers until the current sportsbook market is confirmed. With the NBA season picking up traction it is time to find the winning path with our free NBA picks.
Washington Wizards Have Some Talent but Still Need to Defend
Washington is 2-2, with a 1-1 record on the road. The Wizards beat Chicago 124-120 on Saturday but couldn’t follow it up in Charlotte, losing 110-103 on Monday. That’s been the story early. They can look pretty good when the offense is moving, then struggle to get enough stops or finish possessions. The Charlotte game wasn’t a disaster. It just showed how much work this team still has to do.
The Wizards are averaging 114.3 points and allowing 114.5. That’s almost a dead-even scoring margin. They can put points on the board, but the defense hasn’t been reliable enough to make me trust them against a good offensive team. Cleveland has multiple players who can create their own shot, and Washington is going to have to defend the paint without leaving shooters wide open. That’s easier said than done.

Anthony Davis is averaging 22.8 points and 9.3 rebounds, giving Washington a strong presence around the basket. Trae Young is handing out 11 assists per game, and that’s why the Wizards can still be dangerous when they’re behind. He can create a good shot in a hurry. But AJ Dybantsa is out with an ankle injury, Tristan Vukcevic is sidelined with a hip problem, and Jamir Watkins is out for the season. Justin Champagnie’s foot issue also needs checking. Washington has some good pieces, but the depth is going to be tested against Cleveland.
Cleveland Cavaliers Have Too Many Ways to Score
Cleveland is 2-1 and coming off that 127-125 overtime win over Minnesota. The Cavaliers also beat Brooklyn 125-121 after losing their opener to Philadelphia. Neither victory was particularly comfortable, but they count. Cleveland has been scoring well enough to overcome some shaky defensive stretches. I’d like to see the Cavaliers make things a little easier on themselves Wednesday, because Washington isn’t the kind of opponent that should require another overtime finish.
Cleveland is averaging 119.3 points and allowing 120. That’s the concern if you’re thinking about laying points. The Cavaliers have been giving opponents too many clean looks, and Washington has enough offense to take advantage. But Cleveland’s offensive options are better. The Cavaliers can attack off the dribble, get the ball inside and make Washington choose which scorer it wants to leave open. I don’t see the Wizards winning that matchup over four quarters unless Cleveland has another poor defensive night.
Donovan Mitchell is averaging 26.7 points and scored 26 in Monday’s win. James Harden is handing out seven assists per game, while Evan Mobley is grabbing 9.3 rebounds. That’s a lot for Washington to handle. Jarrett Allen is also finishing around the basket at a 64% clip. Cleveland has Khalifa Diop out with a knee injury and Nae’Qwan Tomlin sidelined with a back problem, but its main offensive options remain available. If Mitchell and Harden get comfortable early, Washington could spend the whole night chasing them.
Washington Wizards vs Cleveland Cavaliers Picks and Predictions
Cleveland Cavaliers -7.5 or Better — Target Spread
I’d take Cleveland -7.5 or better. Washington can score, and Young is capable of keeping the Wizards within reach even when they’re not playing particularly well. That’s what worries me about laying a number this big. But Cleveland has more reliable scoring options, and I think the Cavaliers will have a better chance to control the fourth quarter. Mitchell can get his own shot, Harden can find the open man, and Mobley gives Cleveland another way to hurt Washington inside. The Wizards have been competitive, but I don’t trust their defense enough to back them against that group. I’ll take Cleveland to win by something around ten.
Over 226.5 — Target Total
I like Over 226.5 if that’s the number available. Cleveland has scored 125 and 127 in its last two games, and the Cavaliers are also giving up 120 per night. Washington is averaging better than 114, so there’s a reasonable path to both teams getting into the 110s. The biggest concern is Cleveland deciding to slow the game down and defend a little better after Monday’s overtime win. That could happen. But Washington has been comfortable playing at a quicker pace, and Young can create enough shots to keep the scoreboard moving. Cleveland 121-111 is the kind of game I’m expecting.
Final Picks: Cleveland Cavaliers -7.5 or Better (target spread) and Over 226.5 (target total)
