Carolina Hurricanes vs Calgary Flames Picks and Predictions for Sunday October 18 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/18/2026, 12:05 AM ET

Five goals a game. That’s what Calgary has been giving up, and I’m still trying to figure out how a team manages that through seven games. You’d think somebody would accidentally stop a few more pucks by now. And here comes Carolina, which has won six straight and seems to score whenever it feels like it. The Hurricanes visit the Flames on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. Puck drop is at 8:00 PM ET, and the game will be carried on regional broadcasts and ESPN+. DraftKings had Carolina at -192 and Calgary at +160 on Saturday, with the total at 5.5 goals. That moneyline is a little rich for my taste, especially with Carolina playing Winnipeg Saturday night. The Hurricanes will be playing their second game in two nights, while Calgary has had a couple of days to sit around and think about how badly things have gone. Still, if you’re looking for the better hockey team, this isn’t much of an argument. Check out our free NHL picks for more NHL predictions throughout the season.

Carolina Hurricanes Have Been Rolling Along

Carolina is 6-1-1 heading into Saturday’s game against Winnipeg, and the Hurricanes haven’t lost since October 2. Six straight wins. That’s a pretty good way to start the season. They beat Philadelphia twice, Montreal 6-4, Vancouver 7-2, Chicago 5-2, and Washington 4-2 on Tuesday. That Vancouver game was something else. Seven goals, and Carolina made it look pretty easy. The Hurricanes have won three of their four road games, too, so traveling hasn’t bothered them much. What might bother them is the schedule. Winnipeg on Saturday, Calgary on Sunday. That’s a lot of hockey in a short amount of time, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Carolina looks a little tired early.

The Hurricanes have scored 31 goals in eight games. That’s 3.88 per night. They’ve allowed 19, which works out to 2.38. Those are the kinds of numbers you want to see from a team with Stanley Cup ambitions. Their power play is converting 22.9%, and the penalty kill has been excellent at 93.3%. That’s the number I keep coming back to. Calgary has been having trouble scoring, and Carolina doesn’t give opponents much when they’re shorthanded. The Hurricanes are also getting plenty of shots on goal, usually somewhere in the low-to-mid 30s. They don’t sit around waiting for one perfect chance. They keep putting the puck toward the net and making the other goalie work. Against Calgary’s goaltending, that sounds like a pretty good plan.

Carolina’s leading scorer has nine points through eight games, while its top goal scorer has six. That’s a nice start, and the Hurricanes have been getting plenty of help from their other forwards. Their top goaltender is 4-0 with a 1.73 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage. That’s excellent work. The other option has a .871 save percentage, so I’d certainly want to know who’s starting Sunday. The injuries are worth watching, too. Jordan Staal is out with a calf injury, Seth Jarvis has a shoulder problem, and Taylor Hall is sidelined with an upper-body injury. Alexander Nikishin is also unavailable. That’s quite a few missing pieces. Carolina has been winning anyway, but playing back-to-back games without that depth could make things interesting.

Calgary Flames Can’t Keep Playing Like This

Calgary is 1-6-0. One win in seven games. And if you think that’s ugly, take a look at the scores. The Flames lost 6-1 to Seattle, 4-1 to Vancouver, 6-1 to Seattle again, 7-3 to Colorado, and 4-2 to Anaheim. They finally beat the Ducks 4-2 on Tuesday, which probably felt like winning the Stanley Cup after five straight losses. Then they went to Vegas Thursday and got hammered 6-2. So much for building momentum. Calgary has lost both of its home games, and now the Hurricanes are coming to town. I don’t know what you tell a team in that situation. Maybe just try to get through the first period without giving up three goals.

The Flames have scored 14 goals in seven games. Two per night. They’ve allowed 35. Five per night. You don’t need to be a hockey genius to see what’s wrong here. Calgary’s power play has been converting 20% of its chances, which is actually respectable, but the offense hasn’t been doing much at even strength. The penalty kill is sitting at 80%, and that’s not terrible either. The problem is everything else. The Flames are giving up too many quality chances, and their goaltenders haven’t been stopping enough of them. Carolina is scoring nearly four goals per game and has one of the better penalty kills in hockey. I don’t see a lot of places where Calgary has an advantage.

Calgary’s leading goal scorer has two through seven games. Two! The team’s top point producer has only three. That’s not enough from anybody, let alone the guys you’re counting on to carry the offense. The goaltending has been even worse. Dustin Wolf is 1-4 with a 4.85 goals-against average and a .834 save percentage. Devin Cooley hasn’t been much better. When your goalies are stopping barely eight out of every ten shots, you’re going to lose a lot of hockey games. Jonathan Huberdeau remains out with a hip injury, and Samuel Honzek is sidelined with a lower-body problem. Calgary could certainly use more scoring, but I’m not sure getting one or two players back fixes a team that’s allowing five goals a night. There’s a lot more wrong here than a couple of injuries.

Carolina Hurricanes vs Calgary Flames Picks and Predictions

Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline (-192)

I’m taking Carolina, although I don’t love paying -192. That’s a hefty price for a road team playing its second game in two nights. Calgary has had extra rest, and you never know when a team that’s been getting embarrassed finally decides it’s had enough. Maybe the Flames come out angry and play their best game of the season. Could happen. But I’m not betting on it. Carolina has won six straight, scored 31 goals in eight games, and has been giving up fewer than two and a half per night. Calgary has one win, 14 goals scored, and 35 allowed. That’s a pretty big difference. The Hurricanes have better goaltending, better defense, and more ways to score. If Carolina gets through Saturday in Winnipeg without losing anybody else, I think the Hurricanes are going to have too much for Calgary. Give me Carolina to win.

Over 5.5 Goals (-135)

I’m going over 5.5, and Calgary’s defense is the reason. The Flames have allowed five goals per game. Five! Carolina is scoring 3.88, and the Hurricanes have put up at least four goals in five of their last six games. That’s not a matchup I’d want if I were Calgary’s goaltender. Now, the one thing that bothers me is Carolina’s schedule. The Hurricanes might be tired after playing Winnipeg, and Calgary has had a couple of days to rest. Maybe that keeps the score down a little. And Carolina’s penalty kill has been excellent, so I’m not expecting Calgary to suddenly score four power-play goals. But the Flames have been giving up so many chances that I don’t think Carolina needs its best game to score four or five. Calgary can probably find a goal or two somewhere. A 4-2 Carolina win would do the trick, and 5-2 wouldn’t surprise me at all. I’ll take the over.
