Carolina Hurricanes vs Winnipeg Jets Picks and Predictions for Saturday October 17 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/17/2026, 12:05 AM ET

Carolina is heading into Winnipeg Saturday afternoon, and I’m wondering who’s going to slow these guys down. Six straight wins. The Hurricanes have scored four or more goals in five of those games, and they’re not just beating up on bad teams either. Winnipeg is no pushover, but the Jets just spent Thursday night digging themselves out of a 3-1 hole against Chicago, only to lose 4-3 in overtime. That’s a tough way to lose a hockey game. These two meet at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on October 17, 2026, with the puck dropping at 3:30 PM ET on ESPN+. Carolina is favored around -150, and the total is sitting at 6.5 goals. I like the Hurricanes, but I wouldn’t go chasing them if that price gets much higher. Winnipeg can make life difficult at home. Carolina Hurricanes Are Making Everybody Look Bad

Carolina is 6-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 on the road. The Hurricanes have won six straight, and some of these games haven’t been particularly close. They beat Montreal 6-4, Vancouver 7-2, Chicago 5-2, and Philadelphia 4-1 before knocking off Washington 4-2 Tuesday. That Washington game was interesting because the Capitals had beaten Carolina 5-2 earlier in the season. The Hurricanes weren’t about to let that happen again. They were tied 2-2 in the third period before scoring on the power play and adding an empty-netter. Another win. Another four goals. They’re getting pretty good at this, and it’s hard to find much wrong with the way they’ve been playing.

Carolina is scoring 3.88 goals per game while allowing 2.38. That’s a pretty nice difference, but the shots tell an even better story. The Hurricanes are averaging 32.25 shots on goal and giving up only 21.5. Think about that for a second. They’re getting roughly 11 more shots than their opponents every night. You don’t have to be a hockey expert to figure out why they’re winning. The power play is converting 22.9% of its chances, and the penalty kill has been excellent at 93.3%. That last number is going to matter against Winnipeg, which has been pretty dangerous with the extra man. Carolina isn’t giving opponents much room to work, and when they do take penalties, they’ve usually been able to kill them off.

The Hurricanes have been getting some serious production up front. Their leading scorer has 13 points through eight games, including six goals and seven assists. Another forward has six goals and five assists, and the scoring hasn’t stopped with those two. That’s what makes Carolina such a pain to play against. Shut down one line and somebody else gets you. The goaltending has been good, too. Their top goalie has four wins, a 1.73 goals-against average, and a .911 save percentage. Jordan Staal is out for at least a month with a torn calf muscle, Seth Jarvis remains sidelined with a shoulder injury, and Taylor Hall left Tuesday’s game with an upper-body problem. Those injuries aren’t nothing, especially with Staal’s defensive responsibilities, but Carolina has kept winning anyway. At some point, missing that much experience could catch up with them. It just hasn’t happened yet.

Winnipeg Jets Have Been Getting Away With A Few Things

Winnipeg is 4-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 at home, and the Jets have been a little harder to figure out. They beat Minnesota 5-2 Tuesday, which was a pretty convincing win, then went into Chicago Thursday and fell behind 3-1 in the first period. To their credit, they fought back and tied it in the third. But all that work went out the window when Chicago scored less than two minutes into overtime. Winnipeg actually outshot the Blackhawks 34-28, so it wasn’t like they were getting pushed around all night. They just couldn’t overcome that awful start. The Jets have earned points in six of seven games, and that’s worth remembering before anybody decides Carolina is going to walk into Winnipeg and have an easy afternoon.

The Jets are averaging right around three goals per game and allowing just under three. They’re putting about 26 shots on net while giving up a little more than 28. That’s not terrible, but compare it to Carolina’s numbers and you can see the problem. The Hurricanes have been controlling games, while Winnipeg has been relying on timely scoring and its goaltending to keep things close. The Jets’ power play is clicking at 31.3%, and that’s something Carolina needs to respect. Their penalty kill has also been excellent at 92.3%. So we’ve got two teams that have been pretty good on special teams. The difference is what happens when they’re playing five-on-five. Carolina is getting more shots, allowing fewer chances, and spending more time making opponents defend. Winnipeg hasn’t been doing that nearly as consistently.

Winnipeg’s leading goal scorer has eight goals through seven games, including another one against Chicago Thursday. That’s a heck of a start. The Jets also have a forward with six assists, and their top offensive players have been doing enough to keep them competitive even when the team isn’t playing particularly well. Their likely goaltender has two wins, a 2.62 goals-against average, and a .920 save percentage. Those aren’t bad numbers at all. The bigger concern is the blue line. Josh Morrissey is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, while Elias Salomonsson and Garrett Brown are sidelined. Walker Duehr is also out with a lower-body problem. If Morrissey can’t go, that’s a tough loss against a Carolina team that’s already putting more than 32 shots on net every game. Winnipeg needs its defense to be sharp Saturday. Carolina doesn’t give you much time to get organized.

Carolina Hurricanes vs Winnipeg Jets Picks and Predictions

Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline (-150)

I’m taking Carolina, but I’m not going to pretend Winnipeg doesn’t have a chance here. The Jets have been getting points, their power play is dangerous, and they’ve got enough scoring to make things uncomfortable. But come on, look at what Carolina has been doing. Six straight wins, 3.88 goals per game, and they’re allowing only 21.5 shots a night. Winnipeg is giving up more than 28. That’s a pretty big difference when you’re talking about two teams that have been winning games. The Hurricanes are also 3-0 on the road, so traveling hasn’t bothered them much. Now, losing Staal hurts, and I’m not crazy about Carolina having to deal with Winnipeg’s power play without one of its better defensive forwards. That’s a legitimate concern. But I watched what happened to the Jets against Chicago. They spent most of the night trying to fix a terrible first period. You do that against Carolina, and you might be down three goals before you know what happened. I’ll lay the -150 with the Hurricanes. I wouldn’t chase a much worse number, though.

Under 6.5 Goals (-110)

I know what you’re thinking. Carolina has scored four or more goals in five straight games, Winnipeg just played a seven-goal game against Chicago, and I’m taking the under? Yeah, I am. Hear me out. Carolina is allowing only 2.38 goals per game, and the Hurricanes have been holding opponents to just 21.5 shots. That’s not a team giving up a lot of opportunities. Winnipeg’s goaltending has been decent, too, and the Jets have a penalty kill sitting above 92%. Carolina isn’t going to get unlimited power-play chances here. The Jets can score, especially with the extra man, but I don’t think they’re going to get enough shots to turn this into a track meet. The one thing that scares me is Carolina’s offense. They’ve been scoring in bunches, and if Winnipeg starts giving up odd-man rushes, this pick could be in trouble pretty quickly. Still, I can see something like a 4-2 Carolina win. Six goals gets us home, and I think that’s about where this one lands. Give me the under 6.5.
