The Dallas Stars travel to Capital One Arena to face the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night, with puck drop set for 7:00 PM ET on TNT/HBO Max. Dallas comes in at 25-10-8 overall with a 13-4-5 road record, while Washington is 22-15-6 overall and 13-7-3 at home. Washington is priced as the home favorite at -148, with Dallas at +120, and the total is set at 6.5 goals. Be ready for all the hockey action with our free NHL picks.

Dallas Stars Team Breakdown

Dallas has been the more productive offensive team on paper, scoring 3.40 goals per game while allowing 2.71 goals per game. That defensive number stands out in a matchup with a high total, and it’s backed by a shot profile that suggests Dallas is comfortable winning games without needing to play track meet hockey. The Stars average 25.4 shots per game while allowing 27.9, so they’re not overwhelming teams with volume, but they’ve been efficient and generally stable defensively.

Special teams also give Dallas an edge in how they can control scoring swings. Their power play sits at 29.1%, and their penalty kill is 82.1%. If this game turns into a whistle-heavy night, Dallas has the tools to create separation on the man advantage while holding up reasonably well when short-handed.

Recent form is a major concern, though. Dallas has dropped five straight in their last five games, including losses to Carolina (6-3), Montreal (4-3 OT), Chicago (4-3), Buffalo (4-1), and another Chicago game that went to a shootout (4-3 SO). Even with a couple of those games reaching overtime or a shootout, it still reflects a team that’s leaking results and not finishing games the way their season-long profile suggests they should.

Goaltending is strong enough to keep Dallas competitive, even in a tough stretch. One listed option is at 2.62 GAA with a .900 save percentage, while the other is at 2.44 GAA with a .913 save percentage. That’s a solid tandem, and it’s one of the biggest reasons Dallas can show up as a live road underdog even when their recent results look shaky.

Injuries: Dallas has a forward listed day-to-day with an estimated return of January 7, and another forward listed OUT until January 10. That’s worth noting because Dallas has already been scuffling through this recent stretch, and missing forward depth can make it harder to flip the script offensively.

Washington Capitals Team Breakdown

Washington has been productive offensively as well, scoring 3.30 goals per game, and they’ve paired it with a strong defensive baseline, allowing 2.79 goals per game. Their shot profile is more balanced than Dallas’s, averaging 29.3 shots per game while allowing 28.3, which suggests Washington can drive play more consistently and doesn’t rely quite as heavily on finishing efficiency.

Special teams are where Washington looks vulnerable. Their power play sits at 15.6%, and their penalty kill is 76.9%. Against a Dallas team with a 29.1% power play, that’s a real pressure point—Washington can’t afford to take multiple penalties and expect to skate through it cleanly.

Washington’s recent form is mixed but not alarming. They are 2-3 in their last five, but they’ve shown they can score in bunches with wins like the 7-4 win over Anaheim and the 6-3 win over the Rangers. The losses include a shootout loss to Chicago, a one-goal loss at Ottawa, and a 5-3 loss at Florida, so it’s not as if they’ve been completely outclassed—just a bit inconsistent.

Goaltending is a plus overall. One listed option has a 2.37 GAA with a .915 save percentage, while the other sits at 3.13 GAA and a .890 save percentage. If Washington starts the stronger goaltending option, they’ll look more comfortable justifying favourite pricing at home, especially against a Dallas team currently stuck in a skid.

Injuries: Washington has two players listed day-to-day with estimated returns of January 7, plus a forward on IR with an estimated return of March 9. The day-to-day status is worth monitoring because it can affect both lineup quality and scoring depth, especially if one of those day-to-day players can’t go.

Matchup Edges and Game Script

This game sets up as a clash between Dallas’s elite special teams and Washington’s home-ice stability. Dallas has the clearest edge on the power play, and Washington’s penalty kill has been the weaker unit compared to what Dallas typically punishes. If penalties show up early, Dallas has a realistic path to grab control even on the road. On the other hand, Washington’s ability to generate more shot volume and play a steadier territorial game gives them a strong 5-on-5 foundation, especially at home.

The biggest swing factor is whether Dallas’s recent five-game skid is a sign of deeper issues or just a rough stretch that’s ready to snap with strong goaltending and a power-play conversion or two. Washington’s special teams inefficiency gives Dallas a very real “get-right” angle, but Washington’s goaltending and shot profile also create a scenario where Dallas may have to be extremely efficient again to win outright.

Stars vs Capitals Picks & Predictions

My preferred play is Dallas Stars +1.5 (-218). Even with Dallas struggling in their last five, their season-long defensive profile (2.71 goals allowed per game), strong goaltending options, and elite power play give them a reliable path to keep this game within one on the road, especially against a Washington team that hasn’t separated consistently and has vulnerable special teams.

For a side, I lean Dallas moneyline (+120) as the value shot. The combination of Dallas’s special teams edge and the fact that Washington’s power play hasn’t been a consistent weapon creates a legitimate upset path if Dallas gets even average 5-on-5 play and one timely man-advantage goal.

For the total, I lean Under 6.5 (-122). Both teams have solid defensive baselines (Dallas 2.71 GAA, Washington 2.79 GAA), and both have goaltending options capable of keeping scoring in check. The main risk to the under is a special teams spike, but at 6.5, you can still land comfortably with a 4-2 or 3-2 type script.

Final Score Prediction: Washington Capitals 4, Dallas Stars 3
