The Detroit Red Wings travel to the Bell Centre to take on the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, January 10, 2026, with puck drop set for 7:00 PM ET on ESPN+. Detroit enters at 26-15-4 (11-7-3 away), while Montreal sits at 25-13-6 (12-9-1 home). With both clubs tied at 56 points in the Atlantic standings, this matchup is a real litmus test spot for anyone tracking free NHL picks.

Detroit Red Wings: Offence Is Reliable, Defence Is Volatile

Detroit has been playing solid hockey lately, winning three of its last five, including back-to-back road wins at Ottawa before beating Vancouver 5-1 in their most recent game. Offensively, the Red Wings are producing 3.05 goals per game, driven by a top group that can generate both at even strength and on the power play.

Lucas Raymond has been the engine, leading Detroit with 47 points (13 goals, 34 assists), while Alex DeBrincat has been the primary finisher with 22 goals and heavy power-play production. Detroit’s special teams are a major edge-maker: they’re converting 24.6% of their power plays, which is exactly the type of weapon that can swing a game in a tight matchup.

The concern is defence and overall game control. Detroit is allowing 3.16 goals per game, and if this turns into a track meet, they’ll be relying heavily on their goaltending tandem to survive stretches where Montreal pushes pace. John Gibson has been solid overall with a 2.94 GAA and .898 save percentage, while Cam Talbot sits at 2.99 GAA and .888 save percentage. Detroit can win this game, but they’re not the type of team that consistently locks opponents down.

Montreal Canadiens: High-Event Hockey With Real Scoring Punch

Montreal has won four of its last five, and the way they’re doing it is loud: pace, offence, and a willingness to trade chances. The Canadiens are averaging 3.33 goals per game, and their recent results show how dangerous they are when they get rolling, including a 6-2 win over Florida and a road win at Dallas in overtime.

Nick Suzuki leads Montreal with 48 points (14 goals, 34 assists), and Cole Caufield remains the pure goal threat with 21 goals. A big key here is Lane Hutson’s playmaking on the back end, leading the team with 36 assists and a strong plus/minus. Montreal’s power play has also been strong at 23.4%, which matters in a matchup where both teams can punish penalties.

In goal, Montreal has options, but the numbers suggest volatility. Jakub Dobes has a 3.01 GAA and .889 save percentage, while Samuel Montembeault’s line is rougher at 3.48 and .869. That said, Jacob Fowler’s smaller sample has been strong with a 2.37 GAA and .912 save percentage. Montreal can absolutely win at home in a high-event game — the question is whether they can keep Detroit’s power play from flipping the script.

Montreal’s injury list includes Josh Anderson (out) and Jake Evans (IR). Those absences matter for depth and forechecking pressure, but Montreal has still been scoring consistently even without them.

Points To Consider

This game profiles as offence-first on both sides. Detroit has the slightly better goaltending résumé on paper, but Montreal has been the hotter team recently and has shown they can bury teams in transition when games get loose. The special teams battle is enormous because both power plays are operating at an elite level, and whichever club stays more disciplined likely controls the game state.

Detroit is also trying to shake off the psychological edge from the earlier meeting, where Montreal won 5-1 on October 9. Even though it’s a different game now, that kind of result can still matter if Montreal starts fast at home.

Detroit Red Wings vs Montreal Canadiens Prediction

I lean Over 6.0 goals if you can get a clean number, because both teams have top-end scorers, both power plays are legitimate weapons, and neither defence profile suggests a low-event grind. For a side, I give a small edge to Montreal at home, mostly due to current form and how well they’ve been turning games into their preferred pace and rhythm.

Best Bet: Over 6.0 (lean)

Side Lean: Canadiens ML

Final Score Prediction: Canadiens 4, Red Wings 3
