Philadelphia Flyers vs Detroit Red Wings Picks and Predictions for Thursday October 15 2026
The Philadelphia Flyers head to Detroit on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to play the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. Puck drop is at 7:30 PM ET, with ESPN+, Hulu and Disney+ carrying the game. Philadelphia just lost 3-2 to Seattle in a shootout, while Detroit dropped a 5-4 overtime game to New Jersey. The total is listed at 6.5 goals, and the moneyline market has been leaning toward Detroit, although prices have been all over the place. I’m taking the Red Wings. Neither team is playing particularly good hockey, but Philadelphia hasn’t won a game yet. Eight tries. Nothing. Detroit can at least put some pucks in the net, which is more than I can say for the Flyers most nights. I don’t expect a masterpiece here. Just give me the team that looks a little less lost. Philadelphia Flyers Still Looking For A Win
Philadelphia is 0-5-3. That’s eight games without a win to open the season. Eight! The Flyers nearly broke through Tuesday against Seattle. They fell behind 2-0, scored twice in the third period, then lost 3-2 in a shootout. At least they showed some life. Before that, Carolina beat them 4-1, Boston won 5-1, and Ottawa took a 2-1 decision. It’s been a rough couple of weeks. The Flyers haven’t scored more than two goals in any game this season. Not once. Rick Tocchet has to be getting tired of answering the same questions after every loss. Philadelphia can work hard and make things interesting, but somebody has to actually put the puck in the net. That’s kind of important in hockey.
The Flyers are averaging 1.25 goals per game and allowing 3.75. They’ve scored ten goals and given up 30. That’s a pretty ugly difference. Philadelphia is getting only 20.75 shots on goal per game. Twenty shots? You’re making life awfully easy for the other goalie. The power play is converting just 8.3% of its chances, which doesn’t help. At least the penalty kill has been decent at 80.6%. But the Flyers are spending too much time defending, allowing 34.6 shots a night. You can’t keep letting teams shoot that often and expect the goalie to save everything. Detroit hasn’t been scoring much either, but the Red Wings are getting more than 31 shots per game. That’s a lot more pressure than Philadelphia has been creating.
The goaltending hasn’t been the biggest problem every night. One of Philadelphia’s goalies has a .914 save percentage and a 2.95 goals-against average. That’s pretty respectable considering what’s happening in front of him. The other has struggled, sitting at .875 with a 4.21 goals-against average. I’d definitely want to know who’s starting Thursday. The Flyers also have injury problems. Travis Konecny is out with a lower-body injury, Rasmus Ristolainen has an upper-body issue, and Nikita Grebenkin is unavailable. Cam York is dealing with an upper-body problem as well. Missing Konecny is a big deal for a team that already can’t score. Philadelphia needs more shots, more chances and some better finishes. I’m not sure where all that’s supposed to come from overnight.

Detroit Red Wings Have At Least Been Finding The Net
Detroit is 1-3-2 and has lost three straight since beating Ottawa 5-3. The Red Wings came close Tuesday against New Jersey. They scored four goals, tied the game in the third period, then lost 5-4 just over a minute into overtime. Frustrating, sure. But I’d rather watch that than another game where the offense can’t do anything. Detroit also lost to Montreal in a shootout and fell 3-1 to Seattle. The Red Wings haven’t been winning much, but they’ve shown a little more offense than Philadelphia. Todd McLellan has plenty of work to do, especially with the defense. Giving up five goals at home isn’t going to make anybody happy. But at least there was something positive to take out of Tuesday’s game.
Detroit is scoring 2.33 goals per game and allowing 3.17. Those aren’t great numbers, but compare them with Philadelphia’s 1.25 scored and 3.75 allowed. See the difference? The Red Wings are getting 31.8 shots on goal per game. Philadelphia is barely above 20. That’s a big gap. Detroit’s power play is converting 20% of its chances, while the Flyers are at 8.3%. I like that advantage. The Red Wings’ penalty kill is pretty rough, though, sitting at 66.7%. That’s a problem against most teams. Philadelphia just hasn’t shown it can take advantage of those opportunities. The Flyers are struggling to score at even strength and with the extra attacker. Detroit doesn’t need a perfect defensive game to win this. It just needs to keep creating chances and finish a few of them.
Detroit’s offense looked a lot better against New Jersey. The Red Wings had a forward score twice and finish with three points, while two others chipped in a goal and an assist apiece. That’s the kind of production they’ve been missing. The goaltending still needs work. Detroit’s main starter has a .863 save percentage and a 3.76 goals-against average. He made 32 saves against the Devils but still allowed five goals. That’s not going to win many games. The Red Wings are also missing Marco Kasper with an upper-body injury, while J.T. Compher and Mason Appleton are unavailable. Those absences hurt the depth. But here’s what I like. Detroit has been putting pucks on net. The Red Wings had 31 shots against New Jersey, and they’ve been generating chances most nights. Philadelphia hasn’t. Sometimes that’s enough to make the difference between two struggling teams.
Philadelphia Flyers vs Detroit Red Wings Picks and Predictions
Moneyline Pick: Detroit Red Wings
I’m taking Detroit on the moneyline, provided the price stays reasonable. Look, I’m not pretending the Red Wings are playing great hockey. They’re 1-3-2 and just gave up five to New Jersey. Their goaltending has been shaky, and the penalty kill is a mess. But Philadelphia is 0-5-3 and has scored ten goals all season. Ten goals in eight games. How am I supposed to back that? Detroit is getting almost 32 shots a night, while the Flyers are getting fewer than 21. That’s a lot more chances to score. Philadelphia could finally break through, especially if Detroit’s goalie has another bad game. That’s the risk. But I think the Red Wings get enough offense to win at home. Give me Detroit, although I wouldn’t chase a huge favorite price on either of these teams.
Total Pick: Under 6.5 Goals
I’m taking Under 6.5. Detroit just played a 5-4 game, so I know that sounds a little strange. But look at Philadelphia. The Flyers are averaging 1.25 goals per game. They haven’t scored three in a game all season. Detroit doesn’t have to be great defensively to hold this team to one or two. The Red Wings are scoring only 2.33 themselves. I’m not expecting them to suddenly put up six just because Philadelphia is coming to town. The biggest worry is Detroit’s goaltending. If the Flyers finally start finishing their chances, this could get messy. Philadelphia is also allowing 3.75 goals a night, so Detroit could do plenty of scoring on its own. But I think this settles down after that wild game against New Jersey. Something like 4-2 Detroit makes sense to me. That’s six goals. Good enough for the under.
Final Picks: Detroit Red Wings Moneyline and Under 6.5 Goals.
