Pittsburgh Penguins vs Washington Capitals Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 7 2026
The Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET. Pittsburgh has already provided one of the most ridiculous games of the opening week, blowing a four-goal advantage against Montreal before recovering to win 6-5 in overtime. Now the Penguins head into another Metropolitan Division rivalry where expecting a quiet evening feels optimistic. Pittsburgh Has Already Shown Both Extremes
There were two completely different Pittsburgh teams on display against Montreal. The Penguins built a 5-1 lead and looked ready to cruise, only to watch the Canadiens erase the entire advantage and force overtime.
Pittsburgh eventually escaped with the 6-5 win, which is obviously better than completing the collapse, but allowing four unanswered goals is something the Penguins can’t simply dismiss. The offense looks capable of producing plenty. The ability to protect a lead is another matter.
That combination makes Pittsburgh entertaining but difficult to trust defensively. If the Penguins generate the same quality of offense Wednesday, Washington may be forced into a faster game than it would prefer.

Washington Gets the Home Ice in a Familiar Rivalry
There aren’t many surprises when these clubs meet. Pittsburgh and Washington have seen just about every version of this matchup over the years, and Wednesday’s game should again have plenty of emotion regardless of how early it is in the schedule.
Washington’s advantage is getting this one at Capital One Arena. Against a Pittsburgh team that just showed how quickly its defensive structure can disappear, the Capitals should have opportunities if they stay aggressive around the offensive zone.
The danger is allowing Pittsburgh to establish the game offensively. The Penguins have already demonstrated that they can put several goals on the board quickly, and Washington doesn’t want to spend the evening chasing a multi-goal deficit.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs Washington Capitals Picks and Predictions
Pick: Washington Capitals Moneyline
I’m taking Washington at home. Pittsburgh’s offensive start is encouraging, but watching a 5-1 advantage disappear against Montreal makes it difficult to trust the Penguins on the road in a rivalry matchup. Washington should have opportunities to pressure a Pittsburgh defense that has already shown vulnerability, and home ice gives the Capitals the slight edge in what I expect to be a close game.
Pick: Over 6 Goals
The Over is the stronger play for me. Pittsburgh’s 6-5 game against Montreal told us plenty about the current risk/reward profile. The Penguins can score, but they haven’t exactly made protecting their own net look easy. Washington should contribute at home, and Pittsburgh has enough offense to do its share. A 4-3 final would hardly be surprising.
Final Picks: Washington Capitals Moneyline and Over 6 Goals
