Tampa Bay Lightning vs New York Islanders Picks and Predictions for Tuesday, December 2, 2025

By: Kim Smith Published 12/02/2025, 02:20 AM ET

The Tampa Bay Lightning travel to UBS Arena on Tuesday night to take on the New York Islanders in what sets up as a strong stylistic clash between Tampa Bay’s elite finishing ability and the Islanders’ structured defensive identity. Tampa Bay enters this matchup red-hot, riding a five-game winning streak and improving to 16-7-2 overall and 8-2-2 away from home. The Islanders, meanwhile, sit at 13-10-3 and continue to fight consistency issues, especially on the offensive side of the puck. This matchup also brings together two of the league’s premier goaltenders, Andrei Vasilevskiy and Ilya Sorokin, both of whom are capable of stealing games outright. Lightning Preview

Tampa Bay enters this matchup playing some of its best hockey of the season. The Lightning have outscored opponents 23–8 over their last five games and have leaned heavily on their top-end scoring talent, even with Brayden Point out until December 6. Nikita Kucherov continues to be the centerpiece of the offense, recording 32 points with 21 assists while driving Tampa Bay’s transition and power play structure. Brandon Hagel also enters this game playing extremely well after a two-goal performance and now shares the team lead with 15 goals. Even with a modest 26.6 shots per game, the Lightning convert at a high clip due to shot quality and elite playmaking.

Defensively, Tampa Bay has also tightened up significantly, allowing just 2.60 goals per game, and that improvement correlates directly with Vasilevskiy’s sharp form. The Lightning star goaltender comes in at 11-5-2 with a 2.32 GAA and a .918 save percentage, numbers that put him among the most reliable starters in the league. Even backup Johansson has been serviceable, allowing Tampa to stay competitive regardless of the situation. The only concern here is Tampa’s blue line health, as Erik Cernak is still on IR until December 8 and Darren Raddysh remains day-to-day, though Tampa has managed to remain structurally sound despite the injuries.

Islanders Preview

The Islanders, on the other hand, are battling through a rough stretch of hockey. They have lost three straight and four of their last five, managing only five total goals across those four losses. Offensively, the team continues to depend heavily on Bo Horvat, who leads the Islanders with 26 points and 15 goals, including four on the power play. Outside of Horvat, the scoring has been inconsistent, particularly with Kyle Palmieri on IR and Jean-Gabriel Pageau missing until later in December. The Islanders score 2.88 goals per game, but their lack of finishing depth becomes more apparent when they face higher-end defensive teams.

Still, New York remains competitive due to strong defensive play and a reliable goaltending tandem. Ilya Sorokin and David Rittich both hold save percentages of .900 or better, and Rittich’s 2.61 GAA has given the Islanders stability during stretches when Sorokin hasn’t been at his best. New York allows just 2.85 goals per game and keeps opponents to 26.9 shots, so the defensive identity remains intact even when scoring dries up.

One major trend worth noting is how these teams are entering this matchup. Tampa Bay has won five straight games with convincing margins—4–1 over the Rangers, 6–3 over Detroit, 5–1 over Calgary, 3–0 over Philadelphia, and 5–3 over Washington. The Lightning are controlling play with confidence, pacing games early, and closing them without breakdowns. New York, meanwhile, dropped games 4–1 to Washington, 4–3 in a shootout to Philadelphia, and 3–1 to Boston, while their only recent win came in a low-event 1–0 shootout victory over Seattle. New York simply hasn’t matched the tempo or consistency they displayed earlier in the season.

This matchup also highlights contrasting special teams. Tampa Bay’s power play isn’t elite this season at 16.9%, but their penalty kill is exceptional at 88.8%, one of the top marks in the NHL. The Islanders are at 13.8% on the power play and 81.6% on the kill, both workable but not threatening. Given Tampa Bay’s disciplined play and its elite penalty-kill structure, the Islanders face an uphill battle generating special-teams offense.

From a betting standpoint, the Lightning enter around -135 on the moneyline as the road favorite, while the Islanders sit around +114 as a home dog. The total is set at 6.5, with the over priced at +114 and the under at -130. Given both teams’ goaltending quality and New York’s offensive inconsistency, the total deserves a close look.

Lightning vs Islanders Picks and Prediction

After breaking down the matchup analytically, I’m backing the Tampa Bay Lightning on the moneyline. Their current form is simply too strong to ignore, especially considering how well they are playing on the road. The Lightning are converting their chances efficiently, defending with structure, and getting elite goaltending from Vasilevskiy. Meanwhile, the Islanders are struggling to generate consistent scoring and have not looked sharp offensively in recent games. Sorokin can absolutely steal a game, but I trust Tampa’s overall team form far more right now.

I also lean toward the under 6.5 goals. New York’s scoring troubles make them a difficult team to trust offensively, and both goaltenders in this matchup are capable of keeping this a tight, low-event game. Tampa Bay’s defensive numbers are impressive, and with Pageau and Palmieri out for the Islanders, the finishing depth simply isn’t there. Unless special teams collapse, this profiles more like a 3–2 or 3–1 type game. Make sure you know about how the fans are looking on prediction markets for the Lightning with the Fliff promo code.
