Utah Mammoth vs Pittsburgh Penguins Picks and Predictions for Thursday October 29 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/29/2026, 12:10 AM ET

Pittsburgh beat Nashville in overtime Tuesday, and the Penguins are probably feeling a little better about themselves. I wouldn’t get too excited. They’re still below .500, they’ve got a long injury list, and now Utah comes to town with an offense that’s been putting up plenty of goals. The Mammoth already beat Pittsburgh 5-4 earlier this month. I see a pretty good chance they do it again.

Utah visits Pittsburgh Thursday at PPG Paints Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 PM ET. The Mammoth have the better record, but Pittsburgh has been tough at home. This isn’t a game where I’d lay a bunch of points or take a bad moneyline price. I like Utah to win, and I think the teams can get past 6.5 goals if both offenses show up. Get in on all the action before it happens with our free NHL picks.

Utah Mammoth Have Been Dangerous With the Puck

Utah is 8-5, including a 4-3 record on the road. The Mammoth have won six of their last ten, and they’ve been scoring around 3.5 goals a night during that stretch. That’s good enough to beat most teams when the defense holds up. The problem is that Utah has also been giving up goals. The Mammoth have allowed about 3.7 per game over those ten outings, which explains why some of their wins have been a lot more stressful than they needed to be.

The power play has been a big weapon for Utah. The Mammoth have been among the league’s best with the extra man, and that’s something Pittsburgh needs to be careful about. Utah also has enough speed to create chances off turnovers. But I don’t love the penalty kill. The Mammoth have been allowing too many power-play goals themselves, and that’s how an opponent can stay in a game even when Utah is getting the better chances at even strength.

Utah is missing Maveric Lamoureux with a shoulder injury, while Michael Carcone and John Marino are also unavailable. Marino’s absence matters on the back end, especially against a Pittsburgh team that can still create chances at home. The Mammoth have to be more careful around their own net than they were in the first meeting. Giving up four goals and expecting to win every time isn’t much of a plan.

Pittsburgh Penguins Need More Than a Home-Ice Advantage

Pittsburgh is 5-6-1, but the Penguins have been much better at home than on the road. They’re 4-1 in Pittsburgh, which is the strongest argument for taking them Thursday. They also beat Nashville 3-2 in overtime Tuesday. That’s two points they badly needed. Still, the Penguins have won only three of their last ten games, and I don’t like how often they’ve been giving opponents chances.

Pittsburgh has scored 39 goals and allowed 39 through twelve games. That’s an even goal differential, which sounds respectable until you look at the record. The Penguins have been giving up around 3.2 goals per game over their last ten. Utah has enough scoring to make that a problem. Pittsburgh’s penalty kill has been better than Utah’s, and the Penguins can make this interesting if they stay disciplined. But if they start taking penalties, the Mammoth have a real chance to take control.

The injuries are where Pittsburgh really gets into trouble. Bryan Rust is out with a lower-body injury, and Samuel Girard, Justin Brazeau, Ryan Graves and Trevor van Riemsdyk have also been unavailable. Evgeni Malkin has been dealing with an illness, while Egor Chinakhov and Ben Kindel have had injury concerns. That’s a lot of players to be missing or worrying about. Pittsburgh can still win with the lineup it has, but the margin for error is getting pretty thin.

Utah Mammoth vs Pittsburgh Penguins Picks and Predictions

Utah Mammoth Moneyline

Give me Utah. Pittsburgh being 4-1 at home makes me hesitate a little, and the Penguins already showed Tuesday they can win a close one. But Utah has been the more reliable team this season, and I like the Mammoth’s scoring depth against a Pittsburgh lineup that’s missing too many pieces. The first meeting finished 5-4 Utah, so I’m not expecting the Penguins to roll over. They can score, especially at home. I just think Utah will get enough chances to come away with another win. I’d rather take the Mammoth straight up than get involved with the puck line.

Over 6.5 Goals — Target Total

I like Over 6.5 here. The first meeting had nine goals, Utah has been scoring around 3.5 a game lately, and Pittsburgh has allowed more than three per game over its last ten. The Mammoth’s penalty kill is shaky enough to give Pittsburgh a couple of good chances, too. My concern is that the Penguins are missing several offensive pieces, and that could make it harder for them to keep up. But Utah’s defense hasn’t exactly been shutting teams down. I can see a 4-3 game either way, and that’s enough for me to take the Over at 6.5.

Final Picks: Utah Mammoth Moneyline and Over 6.5 Goals (target total)
