Vancouver Canucks vs New York Rangers Picks and Predictions for Sunday October 11 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/11/2026, 12:10 AM ET

The Vancouver Canucks head to Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday evening for a matchup against the New York Rangers. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 PM ET, with coverage on MSG and streaming through NHL Power Play on ESPN+. Vancouver entered Saturday's game against New Jersey with a 2-2 record after getting hammered 7-2 by Carolina earlier in the week. The Rangers come into Sunday at 4-2 following a 3-1 loss to Washington on Friday night. New York had won four straight before that defeat, but the Rangers could be dealing with a major problem in goal after losing their starting goaltender to an injury. Vancouver Canucks Need to Get Their Defense Straightened Out

Vancouver has been all over the place to start the season, and the Canucks have to be concerned about what happened against Carolina. The Hurricanes rolled to a 7-2 win, and the game was pretty much out of reach before Vancouver ever got settled in. Carolina scored three times in the opening period while the Canucks managed just three shots on goal. That is not the kind of start a team wants against anyone, especially a club that can move the puck as well as Carolina. Vancouver never found a way to slow down the Hurricanes, and the result was an ugly loss that exposed some problems on the defensive end.

What really stands out about the Carolina game is how easily the Hurricanes were able to score. Vancouver gave up six goals on just 18 shots against its starting goaltender before making a change. That is a tough night in goal, but the defense deserves plenty of the blame as well. The Canucks struggled to clear the puck, gave Carolina too much room around the net, and couldn't seem to get out of their own end for long stretches. Vancouver has shown it can score, but giving opponents that many quality chances is going to make winning games difficult. The Rangers have already shown they can put together some strong offensive performances, and I don't like Vancouver's chances if the same defensive problems show up Sunday.

The Canucks have had some good moments this season, including a 4-1 win over Calgary that saw Vancouver score four unanswered goals in the third period. That was the kind of comeback that can give a team confidence, but the Canucks need to find a way to play that kind of hockey for a full 60 minutes. Sunday also presents another challenge with Vancouver playing its second game in as many days after Saturday's matchup against New Jersey. That is a demanding stretch, especially for a team trying to correct some defensive issues. Vancouver could get an opportunity to take advantage of New York's goaltending situation, but the Canucks need to do a much better job of protecting their own net before worrying about what is happening at the other end of the ice.

New York Rangers Look to Get Back in the Win Column

New York had been playing some good hockey before running into Washington on Friday night. The Rangers won four consecutive games, including a convincing 5-2 victory over the Islanders, before falling 3-1 to the Capitals. New York comes into Sunday with a 4-2 record and has shown enough on both ends of the ice to feel good about its opening stretch. The loss to Washington was disappointing, but it is hardly a reason to panic. The Rangers have been getting results, and returning home against a Vancouver team that has struggled defensively gives New York a good opportunity to get back on track.

Friday's loss was a game the Rangers probably felt they had a chance to win after taking an early lead. Washington answered with two goals in the second period and added an empty-netter late to put the game away. New York managed only 22 shots on goal, and that lack of offensive pressure made it difficult to get back into the game once the Capitals took the lead. The Rangers had been much better at creating chances during their winning streak, but Washington did a good job of keeping them from getting comfortable with the puck. I don't expect Vancouver to provide the same kind of defensive resistance, especially after the way Carolina was able to move the puck against the Canucks.

The biggest question for New York heading into Sunday is what happens in goal. Igor Shesterkin suffered a lower-body injury against Washington and was unable to return, leaving his availability uncertain for this matchup. That is a significant concern for a Rangers team that has been playing well defensively. Losing a starting goaltender can change the way a team approaches a game, and New York may need to be a little more careful about the chances it allows. Still, the Rangers have the advantage of playing at Madison Square Garden and facing a Vancouver team coming off a Saturday game. New York has enough offensive ability to make the Canucks pay for defensive mistakes, but the Rangers need to avoid turning this into a wide-open game where their goaltending situation becomes an even bigger factor.

Vancouver Canucks vs New York Rangers Picks and Predictions

Vancouver Canucks vs New York Rangers Moneyline Pick: New York Rangers

I'm going with the Rangers to get back in the win column Sunday evening. New York was rolling along with four straight wins before running into Washington, and I don't see the loss to the Capitals as a major concern. Vancouver, on the other hand, has some serious defensive problems to figure out after giving up seven goals against Carolina. The Canucks couldn't keep the Hurricanes away from dangerous scoring areas, and that is not a good sign heading into Madison Square Garden. The Rangers also get Vancouver on the second night of a back-to-back, which gives New York another advantage. I'm concerned about the injury to Shesterkin, and his status needs to be checked before making a wager, but I still like the Rangers in this matchup. Vancouver has enough offense to make things interesting, but I expect New York to get more quality scoring chances and take advantage of the Canucks' defensive mistakes. Give me the Rangers on the moneyline, provided the price is reasonable.

Vancouver Canucks vs New York Rangers Total Pick: Over 5.5 Goals

I'm taking the Over 5.5 goals in this game. Vancouver just allowed seven goals against Carolina, and the way the Canucks played defensively makes it difficult to trust them against a Rangers team that has already shown it can score. New York should be able to get plenty of opportunities if Vancouver continues giving opponents room around the net. The Rangers also have a question mark in goal after the injury to Shesterkin, and that could open the door for Vancouver to get a few goals of its own. I don't expect the Canucks to suddenly forget how to score just because they struggled against Carolina, and New York may have to rely a little more on its offense if its starting goaltender cannot play. I look for the Rangers to take advantage of Vancouver's defensive problems, but I also expect the Canucks to contribute enough to push this game over the total. A 4-2 New York victory looks like a reasonable possibility, and that would be enough to cash the Over 5.5 if the line is available.

Final Picks: New York Rangers Moneyline and Over 5.5 Goals

This preview was prepared on October 10, 2026. Betting lines, injuries, starting goaltenders, and other game information may change before puck drop. The Over 5.5 selection is conditional on that total being available.
