Vancouver Canucks vs Tampa Bay Lightning Picks and Predictions for Saturday October 17 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 10/17/2026, 12:10 AM ET

You ever watch a hockey game and wonder how a team managed to lose it? That’s Vancouver right now. The Canucks had Florida down two goals Thursday night, held that lead until the third period, and still went home with a 3-2 overtime loss. Six straight defeats. Now they’ve got to head over to Tampa, where the Lightning haven’t lost at home yet. Wonderful timing, huh? These two meet Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida. Puck drop is at 4:00 PM ET, with ESPN+ carrying the game. Tampa Bay is a pretty heavy favorite, with some markets putting the Lightning above -200, and the total is expected to be around 6.5 goals. I like Tampa to win, but I’m not throwing a pile of money at that moneyline. There are better ways to play this game. Check out our free NHL picks for more NHL predictions throughout the season.

Vancouver Canucks Can’t Seem To Finish A Game

Vancouver is 2-6-0 overall and 1-4-0 on the road. They’ve lost six straight, and Thursday’s loss in Florida might have been the worst of the bunch. They were up 2-0 after the first period, and their goaltender was doing everything he could to keep them there. Florida kept shooting. Vancouver kept hanging on. Then the third period arrived. The Panthers scored with a little over 11 minutes left, tied it with 13 seconds remaining, and won in overtime. That’s a miserable way to lose, especially when you’ve already dropped five in a row. The Canucks also lost 6-2 to the Rangers and 4-1 to New Jersey earlier in the trip. They’re finding different ways to lose, which is about the last thing a struggling hockey team needs.

Here’s what really bothers me about Vancouver. They managed just 17 shots against Florida. Seventeen! Their goalie faced 39 and stopped 36 of them. You can’t keep playing hockey like that and expect to win. The Canucks are scoring fewer than three goals per game, and they’ve been allowing opponents far too much time in their own end. It’s not just the goals they’re giving up. They’re making their goaltenders work all night while the offense goes long stretches without doing much of anything. And when they finally get a lead, they can’t seem to protect it. Tampa Bay has enough offensive talent to make that a long afternoon. Vancouver needs to start getting the puck out of its own zone and actually doing something with it.

The Canucks have gotten some decent individual scoring, but it hasn’t been nearly enough. Their leading forwards have been involved in most of the offense, and that’s part of the trouble. When those guys aren’t producing, there isn’t much coming from elsewhere. Vancouver is also missing Thatcher Demko, who’s on injured reserve, along with Akil Thomas, Jack Thompson, and Mackenzie MacEachern. That’s a tough spot for a team already struggling to keep opponents off the scoreboard. Their goaltender was terrific Thursday, making 36 saves against Florida, and they still lost. What more are you supposed to ask from the guy? If Vancouver keeps allowing that many shots, it won’t matter who’s standing in the crease.

Tampa Bay Lightning Keep Getting The Job Done

Tampa Bay has won five of its first seven games and is unbeaten in three home contests. The Lightning had won four straight before losing 4-1 to the Rangers on Tuesday, but they got right back to winning Thursday with a 4-3 overtime victory against Seattle. That one wasn’t exactly comfortable. Tampa had to work for it, and the Kraken kept coming. But the Lightning found the winner in overtime, and that’s what good teams do. They don’t always play their best hockey. Sometimes they just find a way to get the two points. Tampa has beaten Washington, Philadelphia, Minnesota, the Islanders, and Seattle this season. That’s a pretty good collection of wins, and now they get a Vancouver team that’s been having trouble beating anybody.

The Lightning have been scoring a little more than three goals per game, and they’ve generally done a good job keeping opponents from turning games into track meets. Before Thursday, Tampa had allowed two goals or fewer in three of its previous four wins. The Rangers got four past them Tuesday, but New York has been giving a lot of teams trouble lately. Tampa’s offense doesn’t need 40 shots to score. They can take advantage of mistakes, and Vancouver has been making plenty of those. What I like most about this matchup is the difference in how these teams are playing without the puck. Tampa has been making opponents earn their chances. Vancouver has been practically handing them out.

Tampa Bay’s top scorers have been doing their part, and the Lightning have been getting help from their defense as well. Their starting goaltender has been steady enough to win games, although Thursday’s three goals allowed against Seattle weren’t exactly a masterpiece. Still, he’s got a much better team playing in front of him than Vancouver’s goalies have enjoyed lately. Yanni Gourde is on injured reserve, and Dennis Hildeby has been listed as day-to-day. That’s worth watching, especially if Tampa decides to give its regular starter a break after Thursday’s overtime game. But even with those concerns, I’d rather trust Tampa’s lineup right now. Vancouver has been spending too much time chasing the puck, and the Lightning are pretty good at making teams pay for that.

Vancouver Canucks vs Tampa Bay Lightning Picks and Predictions

Tampa Bay Lightning -1.5 Goals

I’m not paying a huge moneyline price on Tampa, so give me the Lightning on the puck line instead. Look, Vancouver had a two-goal lead against Florida and couldn’t hold it. The Canucks were outshot 39-17, and their goalie practically had to stand on his head just to get the game into overtime. Now they’re playing a Tampa team that’s unbeaten at home and has won five of seven. I know the Lightning needed overtime against Seattle, and that’s the part that bothers me about laying a goal and a half. Tampa could win 3-2 and leave us holding a losing ticket. But Vancouver has already lost games by three and four goals on this trip, and I don’t see them suddenly fixing all their defensive problems in two days. If Tampa gets ahead early, the Canucks are going to have to open things up. That’s where I think the Lightning can put this one away. I’ll take Tampa -1.5, provided the puck-line price is reasonable.

Under 6.5 Goals

I’m going under 6.5, and most of that comes down to Vancouver’s offense. Seventeen shots against Florida. I keep coming back to that because it’s hard to score three or four goals when you’re barely making the other goalie work. The Canucks have been struggling to generate chances, and Tampa has generally been pretty good at keeping games under control. Now, could the Lightning score five by themselves? Sure. Vancouver has been giving up enough opportunities that I wouldn’t rule it out. That’s the danger with this pick. But I think Tampa can control this game without turning it into a shooting gallery. Something like 4-2 makes sense to me. Vancouver gets a couple, Tampa does enough to win comfortably, and we stay under the number. I’ll take my chances with that.

Final Picks: Tampa Bay Lightning -1.5 Goals and Under 6.5 Goals
