Washington Capitals vs Carolina Hurricanes Picks and Predictions for Friday October 2 2026
The Washington Capitals visit the Carolina Hurricanes at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday, October 2, 2026, as both Metropolitan Division teams open the 2026-27 regular season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET with coverage on ESPN+. Washington finished last season outside the playoffs, while Carolina went 53-22-7, won the Metropolitan Division with 113 points and eventually captured the Stanley Cup. The Hurricanes were also dominant at home, winning 29 of their 41 games at Lenovo Center. Early betting markets have Carolina around -140 to -141 on the moneyline, with Washington listed as the road underdog. Washington Begins a New Push for the Playoffs
Washington enters the new season looking to return to the postseason after falling short in 2025-26. The Capitals finished fourth in the Metropolitan Division and remained competitive for much of the season, but their inability to secure a playoff position ultimately ended their campaign earlier than expected.
The Capitals still showed enough offensively to make them dangerous. Washington scored 261 goals last season while averaging a little more than three goals per game. The defensive numbers were also respectable, with the Capitals finishing among the stronger teams in goals allowed per game. Special teams were less convincing, particularly a power play that operated below the level Washington needed from it.
Washington also proved last season that it could compete directly with Carolina. The Capitals went into Raleigh and earned a 4-1 victory in November, lost a 3-2 shootout at home in December and then defeated the Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime in January. That gave Washington two wins in three meetings, with both victories demonstrating that Carolina's overall superiority didn't necessarily translate into control of this particular matchup.

The challenge Friday is starting the season against the defending Stanley Cup champions on their home ice. Washington won't have the benefit of easing into its schedule, and its ability to withstand Carolina's early pressure should tell us plenty about whether the Capitals can remain competitive throughout the night.
Carolina Raises the Curtain on Its Title Defense
Carolina couldn't have accomplished much more last season. The Hurricanes finished 53-22-7 with 113 points, scored 291 goals and allowed only 236. They then carried that success into the postseason, sweeping their first two playoff series, winning the Eastern Conference Final in five games and capturing the Stanley Cup in six.
The Hurricanes' regular-season goal differential illustrates just how complete the team was. Carolina finished second in the NHL in goals scored and fifth in goals allowed. That combination allowed the Hurricanes to dictate games at both ends rather than relying exclusively on offense or defense to carry them.
Home ice was another major strength. Carolina won 29 of 41 games at Lenovo Center during the regular season. The Hurricanes' home games were relatively high scoring as well, with Carolina averaging 3.93 goals while allowing 3.07. That seven-goal combined average is noteworthy when considering Friday's total.
There is one reason to avoid treating Carolina's opener as automatic. Washington gave the Hurricanes trouble last season and won the only meeting played in Raleigh. Opening night can also create more volatility than a normal regular-season matchup. Still, Carolina enters with the stronger overall statistical foundation and the benefit of beginning its title defense at home.
Washington Capitals vs Carolina Hurricanes Picks and Prediction
Pick: Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline (-140 or Better)
Carolina is the side pick at -140 or better. Washington's success in last season's head-to-head series makes laying a large puck line unattractive, but the moneyline allows us to back the stronger overall team without requiring a multi-goal victory. Carolina went 53-22-7, won 29 times at home and finished with substantial advantages in both scoring and goal prevention before carrying that performance all the way through a Stanley Cup run. Washington can make this competitive — and demonstrated that repeatedly last season — but Carolina's combination of home ice, depth and two-way production gives the Hurricanes the better position for the season opener.
Pick: Over 6 If Available
The Over is the preferred total if the market settles at 6 goals. Carolina's home games averaged exactly 7.00 combined goals last season, with the Hurricanes producing 3.93 goals per game themselves at Lenovo Center. Washington's road games averaged approximately 6.3 combined goals, providing another indication that this doesn't necessarily have to become a low-scoring divisional battle. Two of last season's three meetings reached at least six goals, including Carolina's 3-2 shootout loss and Washington's 4-3 overtime victory. At 6, the push protection on something like a 4-2 Carolina victory makes the Over attractive. I would be considerably more cautious if the market moves to 6.5 before puck drop.
Final Picks: Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline (-140 or Better) and Over 6 if available
