Washington Capitals vs Nashville Predators Picks and Predictions for Thursday October 29 2026
Washington is the better team on paper, but I’m not convinced the Capitals are the right side Thursday night. They’ve got Philadelphia on Wednesday, then have to get on a plane and head to Nashville. That’s not a great setup, especially with their starting goaltender on injured reserve. The Predators have had their problems, but they’ve been tougher to beat at home, and they’re getting a tired Washington team at a pretty good time.
The Capitals visit Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, Thursday night, with puck drop at 8:00 PM ET. Washington is 6-4 heading into Wednesday, while Nashville has been collecting plenty of overtime points without winning as often as it would like. I’m taking the Predators on the moneyline and looking at Over 5.5 goals. Get ready for all the action with our free NHL picks.
Washington Capitals Have Been Scoring, But Giving Up Too Much
Washington is 6-4, including a 1-2 road record. The Capitals have been scoring around 3.4 goals a game, which is good enough to keep them competitive most nights. They beat Buffalo 4-3 Saturday, but they also lost 5-2 to Los Angeles in their previous game. That’s the sort of up-and-down play that makes me nervous about backing them on the road. They’ve got enough offense to win, but the defense hasn’t been consistent.
Washington has scored 34 goals and allowed 32 through ten games. The power play has been around twenty percent, which is respectable, but not something I’d want to depend on. The Capitals have also been giving up too many chances in their own end. Nashville doesn’t shoot as much as Washington, but the Predators have been good at finishing the chances they get. If the Capitals are tired Thursday, they could spend a lot of time chasing the puck.

The big concern is in goal. Logan Thompson has been on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, which leaves Washington relying on its other options. Vincent Desharnais and Rasmus Sandin are also out on defense, and Patrick Thomas has been unavailable. That’s a lot of missing help around the net. Washington can still score enough to win, but I don’t like the idea of a short-handed defense playing its second game in two nights.
Nashville Predators Need to Turn Close Games Into Wins
Nashville is 4-3-5, which is one of those records that makes you look twice. The Predators have won only four games, but they’ve picked up points in nine of twelve. That’s not a team getting blown out every night. They’ve just been having trouble finishing games. Nashville lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Islanders Tuesday, after beating Colorado 6-2 on Sunday. That’s a pretty big swing in results, but it shows the Predators can score when they get rolling.
The Predators are averaging about 2.8 goals and allowing a little more than three. They don’t put a ton of shots on goal, but their power play has been excellent, converting better than thirty percent of its chances. That’s where Nashville can hurt Washington. The Capitals have been taking enough penalties to give opponents opportunities, and the Predators don’t need many chances with the extra man to make somebody pay. Nashville’s penalty kill has been good too, sitting above eighty-five percent.
The Predators have been relatively healthy compared with Washington. William Trudeau has been dealing with an upper-body injury, but Nashville hasn’t had the same long list of missing players. That matters when you’re playing a team on the second night of a back-to-back. The Predators can roll their lines and try to wear Washington down. If they get an early lead, I like their chances of making the Capitals work hard to get back into it.
Washington Capitals vs Nashville Predators Picks and Predictions
Nashville Predators Moneyline
I’m taking Nashville. Washington has the better record, and I wouldn’t argue with anybody who thinks the Capitals have more overall talent. But Thursday is a rough spot for them. They play Philadelphia Wednesday, then travel to Nashville with a short-handed defense and questions in goal. The Predators have been getting points even when they lose, and their power play gives them a way to steal a goal or two. Washington can absolutely win if its offense gets rolling early. But I’d rather have the rested home team in this spot. Give me Nashville on the moneyline.
Over 5.5 Goals — Target Total
I’ll take Over 5.5. Washington is scoring around 3.4 goals a game and allowing 3.2. Nashville has been giving up more than three, and its power play has been one of the better ones in hockey. That’s enough for me to think both teams can get on the board a few times. The Capitals’ goaltending situation makes me more comfortable with the Over, although a strong performance from their replacement could change things. Nashville has played plenty of close games, so a 3-2 finish is possible. But I think this one gets to six. Something like Nashville 4-2 is where I’m leaning.
