Washington Capitals vs San Jose Sharks Picks and Predictions for Wednesday, December 3, 2025

By: Kim Smith Published 12/03/2025, 02:00 AM ET

The Washington Capitals continue their West Coast swing with a matchup against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Wednesday night. Washington comes in at 15-9-2, riding a four-game winning streak and playing some of their most cohesive hockey of the season. San Jose, at 13-11-3 with a strong 9-4-3 home record, has been much more competitive than many expected, especially with rookie phenom Macklin Celebrini leading the way. If you’re scanning the board for edges on a busy night, this is one you’ll want circled—alongside the rest of today’s free NHL picks.

Washington Capitals – Rolling, Structured, and Confident

The Caps have ripped off four straight wins, beating the Islanders, Maple Leafs, Jets, and Blue Jackets by a combined 17–8 margin. They’re now 6-4-1 on the road, and their overall profile is very strong.

Washington scores 3.38 goals per game on 29.7 shots, with Tom Wilson leading the way at 29 points (15G, 14A) and John Carlson driving play from the back end with 16 assists. The power play is a modest 15.6%, but this team is getting it done more at 5-on-5 than in past Ovechkin-centric eras.

Defensively, they’ve been excellent: just 2.58 goals against per game, 25.8 shots against, and a system that does a good job keeping chances to the outside. Logan Thompson has been a rock in net at 2.08 GAA, .916 SV%, and even with Charlie Lindgren’s more average numbers, Washington has one of the better goaltending situations in the league right now. Only Nic Dowd is on IR, keeping the forward group effectively intact.

San Jose Sharks – Better Than Expected, But Still Vulnerable

San Jose’s 13-11-3 record and 9-4-3 home mark are quietly respectable, especially for a roster in transition. Their recent results include a 6–3 win over Utah, a 3–2 win over Vancouver, and a 3–1 upset over Boston, but also heavy losses like the 6–0 defeat in Colorado.

Offensively, the Sharks average 2.93 goals per game on 24.4 shots, and almost everything runs through Macklin Celebrini. The rookie already has 40 points with 14 goals and 26 assists, carrying the attack both at even strength and on the power play. Their PP sits at 19.2%, which is perfectly respectable given the roster.

Defensively, San Jose allows 3.19 goals per game and a worrying 31.7 shots against. They’re often hemmed in, relying heavily on their goaltenders. Yaroslav Askarov has been solid at 2.96 GAA and .910 SV%, while Alex Nedeljkovic sits at 3.12 and .897. The penalty kill is decent at 81.7%, but the overall volume of chances they surrender keeps them on a knife’s edge most nights.

Washington Capitals vs San Jose Sharks – Advanced Analytics Breakdown

Washington brings edges almost across the board:

  • Goals for: 3.38 vs 2.93
  • Goals against: 2.58 vs 3.19
  • Shots for: 29.7 vs 24.4
  • Shots against: 25.8 vs 31.7

San Jose’s primary advantages are:

  • Home record (9-4-3)
  • A dangerous, singular offensive threat in Celebrini
  • A decent power play and PK combination

The matchup comes down to whether the Sharks can withstand Washington’s sustained zone time and avoid extended defensive shifts. The Caps are structured, deep, and don’t rely on one line to drive all their offense, which makes them particularly tough on teams like San Jose that lack depth.

Picks and Prediction

I’m backing the Washington Capitals -1.5 (+164) on the puck line rather than laying the heavy moneyline juice. Washington is in form, dominating both territorially and on the scoreboard, and they’re facing a Sharks team that bleeds shots and high-danger looks, even at home. Thompson’s goaltending gives the Caps a strong chance to win this by more than one.

On the total, I lean over 6.5 goals (+110). Washington has scored 4+ in four straight, and San Jose has both the offensive talent in Celebrini and the defensive leaks to push this higher-scoring. A 5–2 or 4–3 type game is very much in play. Betting on sports and on the Capitals is easy, but even easier if you use the best sportsbooks. My Final Picks:

  • Washington Capitals -1.5 (+164)
  • Over 6.5 Goals (+110)

Projected Final Score: Capitals 5 – Sharks 2
