Winnipeg Jets vs Tampa Bay Lightning Picks and Predictions for Thursday October 29 2026
Winnipeg is going to have its hands full in Tampa. The Jets haven’t been scoring much, and the Lightning have been one of the better teams in the East through the opening weeks. That doesn’t mean Tampa Bay is going to run away with it. Winnipeg can make a game ugly when its goaltending is right. But if I’m picking a winner, I’m taking the team that’s been getting more offense and playing better hockey lately.
The Jets visit the Lightning Thursday at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida. Puck drop is 7:00 PM ET. Winnipeg has been hovering around .500, while Tampa Bay has won seven of its first eleven games. I’m taking the Lightning on the moneyline and looking at Under 6.5 goals. Winnipeg Jets Need to Find Some Goals
Winnipeg is 4-5-3, and the Jets have been having a hard time putting wins together. They haven’t been terrible defensively, but scoring has been another story. Winnipeg has been getting fewer than three goals per game, and that’s a tough way to win when you face a team like Tampa Bay. The Jets can keep games close. They’ve just been struggling to finish them.
Winnipeg’s offense has been around 2.7 goals per game, while the defense has allowed fewer than three. That’s a respectable number at the other end of the ice. The Jets have also had some success on the power play, which gives them a chance if Tampa Bay starts taking penalties. But at even strength, Winnipeg hasn’t been creating enough good chances. The Jets need more time in the offensive zone instead of depending on one or two power plays to get the offense going.

The Jets’ biggest concern is whether their goaltending can keep Tampa Bay from getting an early lead. Winnipeg has been better when it can settle into a defensive game and make the other team work for its chances. Falling behind by two goals would force the Jets to open things up, and that’s not where I want to see them against Tampa Bay. Winnipeg has enough defensive structure to make this competitive, but the offense has to help.
Tampa Bay Lightning Have Been Getting the Job Done
Tampa Bay is 7-3-1, and the Lightning have looked much more comfortable than Winnipeg. They’ve been scoring more than three goals a game and allowing fewer than three. That’s a good combination. The Lightning have also been strong at home, where they can get the matchups they want and keep their better offensive lines away from difficult defensive assignments.
Tampa Bay’s offense has been around 3.4 goals per game, and the defense has allowed about 2.6. The Lightning have been better at even strength than on the power play, which is a little surprising given how much offensive talent they’ve had over the years. But they don’t need to live off special teams to score. Tampa Bay can get chances off the rush, and the Lightning have been good at making teams pay for turnovers. Winnipeg can’t afford to get careless with the puck in the neutral zone.
The Lightning have been getting plenty of production from their top offensive lines, and that’s where I see the difference in this matchup. Tampa Bay has more ways to score than Winnipeg does right now. The Jets can try to slow the game down, but the Lightning are comfortable playing that way too. If Tampa Bay gets an early lead, I like its chances of protecting it rather than letting Winnipeg turn this into a back-and-forth game.
Winnipeg Jets vs Tampa Bay Lightning Picks and Predictions
Tampa Bay Lightning Moneyline
I’m taking Tampa Bay. Winnipeg’s defense is good enough to keep this close, and I wouldn’t be shocked if the Jets hang around until the third period. But Tampa Bay has been scoring more consistently, and the Lightning have the better record for a reason. Winnipeg needs a strong goaltending performance and probably a power-play goal to win this game. Tampa Bay doesn’t need as many things to go right. That’s what I’m betting on. Give me the Lightning at home.
Under 6.5 Goals — Target Total
I’ll take Under 6.5. Winnipeg has been scoring fewer than three goals a night, and the Jets aren’t a team that wants to trade chances with Tampa Bay for sixty minutes. Tampa Bay can score, but the Lightning have also been defending well enough to keep opponents from getting much going. The danger is an early Tampa Bay lead forcing Winnipeg to open up, or a couple of power-play goals pushing the total higher. But I think the Jets will try to keep this tight for as long as possible. Something like 3-2 Tampa Bay makes sense to me.
