The PLAY: Minnesota +8.5 (-110)
2% Minnesota (7:00 ET): While a little late in officially getting on board here, I did mention on the Morning Wager (see video below) that this is an ideal spot to fade #10 Michigan State, who is coming off a hard-fought loss to rival Michigan (last Friday) and has another top-five opponent (#5 Illinois) on deck at home this Saturday. The loss to Michigan saw Sparty fall into a 16-point halftime hole, one they actually climbed all the way out of to take a brief two-point lead in the second half. But it was not to be as Michigan eventually prevailed 83-71 as a short road favorite. In the days that have followed, the two head coaches - Dusty May of Michigan and Tom Izzo of Michigan State - have traded barbs about the physicality and supposed “dirty” nature of the contest.
Let’s not forget what happened the last time Michigan State hit the road. They trailed Rutgers (who I consider to be the worst team in the Big 10) most of the way before rallying and winning in overtime. So that’s B2B pretty bad performances by Izzo’s team. Tonight, they are visiting a Minnesota team that I would say is far better than its record. I couldn’t believe this when I read it (but it’s true!) - prior to Sunday’s loss at Penn State - the Golden Gophers had led or been tied at the end of the first half or at the end of regulation in six straight games and lost all six! In another cruel twist of fate, on Sunday, they rallied back from a double digit deficit to tie Penn State, only to then lose in the closing seconds.
Injuries have not helped Minnesota’s cause this season, however, they have clearly stayed competitive. Looking at the current seven-game losing streak, two of the losses went to overtime and three more were decided by four points or less. So I’ll call for them to keep it close here on their home floor. Four of the Gophers’ last five have been played out on the road. Last time here at home, they were ahead of unbeaten Nebraska at halftime before wilting down the stretch! Unlike the Cornhuskers, Michigan State is not a great three-point shooting team (4 of 23 last game!). This should (theoretically) be a slow-paced game where neither team is getting much in transition. Take the home team to stay within the number. 2% Minnesota (Play to +7.5)
