The PLAY: Texas Tech +9.5 (-115)
Top-ranked Arizona is coming off its first loss of the season, Monday at Kansas. That loss happened despite the Jayhawks not having Darryn Peterson. Most bettors probably think the Wildcats are going to easily bounce back here. Oddsmakers opened ‘Zona as 9.5-point favorites Saturday in Tucson. But I think that’s too many points.
Texas Tech is a good basketball team. Led by JT Toppin, the Red Raiders are not underdogs very often and certainly not underdogs of this size very often. They covered as 7.5-point dogs at Houston earlier in the year. Not to mention beat Duke outright as a 9.5-point dog on a neutral back in December. Covered at Illinois as well.
Talked about it earlier this week on the Morning Wager. When a team has a long win streak snapped, like Arizona just did on Monday, oftentimes they are overvalued the next game. The public is all too quick to bet these teams, off a loss, to bounce back. And they’ll lay points. But look at earlier in the week. Illinois, after having a long win streak snapped, lost outright to Wisconsin. Duke, coming off a loss, did not cover at Pitt.
One key edge for Texas Tech in this game could be the three-point line. They’ve attempted nearly three times as many three-pointers this season compared to Arizona. They’ve made nearly double the number of threes.
