The PLAY: Houston Astros 123 Parker Messick (LHP) Must Start
Cleveland rookie lefty Parker Messick has been brilliant so far this season going 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA and 0.75 ratio in 25.2 innings. He took a no-hitter into the ninth inning in his last start this past Thursday in a 4-2 victory against the Orioles.
Messick also threw a career high 112 pitches in that game. He had never reached 100 pitches before. Now he is pitching on only four days rest. The Astros are averaging 5.7 runs per game during their last four games. They rank fourth in slugging percentage and OPS versus lefties. Yordan Alvarez leads the majors in homers and is tied for first in RBIs.
Houston is pitching Ryan Weiss, who had a 2.87 ERA with 207 strikeouts in 178.2 innings pitching last season in the KBO League, the top-level professional baseball league in South Korea.
The Guardians rank 21st in runs and batting average.
So this sets up as a promising spot for the underdog Astros. It also sets up well for an alternative wager of taking the Astros to score more than 3.5 runs thus taking Weiss and a bad Houston bullpen out of the equation.
