The PLAY: Cleveland Guardians 116 Slade Cecconi (RHP), Patrick Corbin (LHP) Must Start
I know that Cleveland is 0-5 when Slade Cecconi starts. But we're getting a good price on them Sunday, facing a Toronto team that is currently without a true closer, and starting Patrick Corbin. Plus, the Guardians have been excellent when coming off a loss so far this season (11-1!) Despite winning yesterday, the Blue Jays' season run differential is still -25, one of the worst in all of baseball. Cecconi has alternated bad and good starts. Off a bad one, I think he and the Guards bounce back here.
Toronto won Saturday's game, 5-3, thanks to some shaky Cleveland fielding. Guardians 2B Juan Brito let a ground ball get by for an RBI single in the sixth, which turned into a three-run inning for the Blue Jays and was the difference in the game. "We should have been out of that inning with maybe one run scoring," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "We had a tough inning defensively. It happens."
Let's count on Cleveland cleaning up the mistakes in the field and backing Cecconi with some offense here, as they'll face Corbin, who is starting today because Toronto wanted to give Dylan Cease some extra rest. Corbin isn't necessarily still an "auto-fade" like he was a couple years ago, but has a 4.44 ERA in five career starts vs. the Guardians. The Blue Jays' bullpen remains in flux with Jeff Hoffman having been demoted from the closer's role. Louis Varland closed last night, but not before allowing one run on three hits.
