The PLAY: Pittsburgh Pirates -135 Brady Singer (RHP), Mitch Keller (RHP) Must Start
2% Pittsburgh (6:45 ET): Think it’s time to “sell high” on this Cincinnati team. Yes, the Reds have won five consecutive series (just took two of three at home from Colorado including a 6-4 victory on Thursday) and currently lead the NL Central with a 20-11 record. This is the franchise’s best 31-game start since ‘06 and the first time they’ve EVER won 20+ games before May 1st. (Granted, the regular season starts earlier now, but this is an organization that dates back to 1881!) The Reds are also a MLB-best 10-3 on the road. But there’s been a LOT of good fortune here, namely a 7-0 record in one-run games. All but six wins have been by two runs or less, or in extra innings!
Conversely, I think tonight’s series opener is also a good time to “buy low” on the Pirates. They’ve lost five in a row overall, and just got swept in a four-game series here at home (rare) by St. Louis. Despite this recent swoon, the Bucs (who are 16-16) still have a better YTD run differential (+12) than the Reds (-3). Yes, Cincinnati - despite its 20-11 WL record - has actually been outscored on the season. Not only can we point to run differential as justification for the Pirates being favored Friday, but they also took two of three from the Reds earlier this year in Cincinnati. That’s one of only two series the Reds have lost in 2026 (outscored 16-8).
I give the Pirates the edge in tonight’s starting pitching matchup with Mitch Keller going against Brady Singer. Keller has a 3.18 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 3.09 FIP while Singer is at 4.97, 1.62 and 4.98. Furthermore, Keller gets to face a Reds’ lineup that is dead last in MLB when it comes to batting average (.220). The Pirates are 4th in MLB in runs scored and top 10 in wRC+ at home. Singer has a 6.37 career ERA vs. Pittsburgh, and is 0-3 when facing them here at PNC Park. The Reds’ bullpen is probably due for some regression, moving forward, as well. 2% Pittsburgh (Play to -160)
